    Detection and Imaging with Leak Microstructures

    Results obtained with a new, very compact detector for imaging with a matrix of leak microstructures (LM) are reported. Spatial linearity and spatial resolution obtained by scanning and the detection of alpha particles with 100% efficiency, when compared with a silicon detector, are stressed. Preliminary results obtained in detecting single electrons emitted by the heated filament (Ec < 1 eV) at 1–3 mbar of propane are reported

    Impact of the policies of scientific initiation and program science without borders in the access of students into Brazilian postgraduate programs

    This article presents a description of Brazilian federal policies directed to improve the scientific experience of undergraduate students: the Institutional Programs of Scientific Initiation Scholarships (PIBIC), Technological Development and Innovation Scholarships (PIBITI) and the Science without Borders (SWB). Then it discusses an outcome of these governmental actions: the admittance of students into Brazilian Postgraduate Programs. The article emphasizes that such policies greatly contributed to the admittance of students into Brazilian Postgraduate Programs of higher academic quality and international recognition, compared to students that did not participate in those Brazilian federal policies. It means that PIBC, PIBITI and SWB are relevant instruments for training and qualifying human resources to scientific, technological and educational activities in Brazil

    Maternidade na adolescência inicial : estudo caso-controle no sul do Brasil

    This paper investigates factors associated with motherhood among adolescents from 14 to 16 years of age in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This is a case-control study with 431 adolescent mothers (cases) and 862 adolescents who had never given birth (controls). Data were obtained through home visits by an interviewer-applied questionnaire. Sociodemographic characteristics, quality of social and family relationships, lifestyle and history of abuse were studied as potential determinants to early adolescent motherhood. Conditional logistic regression was used for data analysis according to a two-stage hierarchical model. Results showed that lower economic class, schooling failure, tobacco consumption, alcoholic drunkenness at least once in life and having a mother who gave birth before 20 years of age were positively associated with early adolescent motherhood. Later menarche and having relatives or having friends in whom to trust remained as protective factors. Schooling failure, which obtained the highest risk, points to the important role of the school in this population’s development and its potential to stimulate healthy life habits.Este artigo visa investigar fatores associados à maternidade em adolescentes moradoras em Porto Alegre, com idade entre 14 e 16 anos. Estudo caso-controle com 431 mães adolescentes (casos) e 862 adolescentes que nunca tiveram filho (controles). Os dados foram obtidos através de visitas domiciliares e mediante aplicação de questionário estruturado. Foram estudadas variáveis sociodemográficas, qualidade das relações sociais e familiares, estilo de vida e histórico de abuso como possíveis determinantes da maternidade na adolescência. Os dados foram analisados através de regressão logística condicional, utilizando modelo hierarquizado. Os resultados mostram que pertencer aos estratos socioeconômicos mais baixos, possuir mãe que teve o seu primeiro filho até os 19 anos, defasagem escolar, uso de tabaco e embriaguez alcóolica pelo menos uma vez na vida foram positivamente associados à maternidade na adolescência. Menarca mais tardia e ter familiares ou ter amigos em quem confiar foram fatores de proteção. Defasagem escolar, que obteve razão de odds mais elevada, aponta o importante papel da escola na formação desta população e no seu potencial para estimular hábitos de vida sadios

After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for ∼ 3 million stars and detailed abundances for ∼ 1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey ∼ 0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey  ∼ 400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in z 1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2.     The Dark Energy Survey and operations: Years 4 and 5

    The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is an operating optical survey aimed at understanding the accelerating expansion of the universe using four complementary methods: weak gravitational lensing, galaxy cluster counts, baryon acoustic oscillations, and Type Ia supernovae. To perform the 5000 sq-degree wide field and 30 sq-degree supernova surveys, the DES Collaboration built the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), a 3 square-degree, 570-Megapixel CCD camera that was installed at the prime focus of the Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). DES has completed its third observing season out of a nominal five. This paper describes DES “Year 4” (Y4) and “Year 5” (Y5), the survey strategy, an outline of the survey operations procedures, the efficiency of operations and the causes of lost observing time. It provides details about the quality of these two-season's data, a summary of the overall status, and plans for the final survey season

    Post-Stroke Hemiplegic Rodent Evaluation: A Framework for Assessing Forelimb Movement Quality Using Kinematics

    : Kinematics is the gold-standard method for measuring detailed joint motions. Recent research demonstrates that post-stroke kinematic analysis in rats reveals reaching abnormalities similar to those seen in humans after stroke. Nonetheless, behavioral neuroscientists have failed to incorporate kinematic methods for assessing movement quality in stroke models. The availability of a user-friendly method to assess multi-segment forelimb kinematics models should greatly increase uptake of this approach. Here, we present a framework for multi-segment forelimb analysis in rodents after stroke. This method greatly enhances the understanding of post-stroke forelimb motor recovery by including several movement quality metrics often used in human clinical work, such as upper-limb linear and angular kinematics, movement smoothness and kinetics, abnormal synergies, and compensations. These metrics may constitute a preclinical surrogate for the Fugl-Meyer assessment of hemiplegic patients. The data obtained using this method are 83 outputs of linear and angular kinematics and kinetics. The outputs also include 24 time series of continuous data, which afford a graphical representation of the kinematics and kinetics of the reaching cycle. We show that post-stroke rodents displayed many features resembling those seen in humans after stroke that are evident only when multi-segment kinematics models are considered. This method expands the knowledge derived from methods constrained to paw movements to a multi-segment forelimb movement quality framework. Moreover, it highlights the need for preclinical work to consider more sensitive measures of sensorimotor impairment and recovery as a means to enhance the interpretation of true recovery and compensation. © 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.     Comparação de dois instrumentos de avaliação de qualidade de vida em idosos

    To investigate if there is convergent validity between the dimensions of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-Brief Version (WHOQOLBref) and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a random sample of 872 elderly Southern-Brazilians was evaluated. Questionnaires assessing sociodemographic data and quality of life in general (WHOQOL-Bref) and oral healthrelated quality of life (OHIP-14) were used. Analysis of the WHOQOL-Bref and OHIP-14 questionnaires used descriptive statistics. The dimensions of the WHOQOL-Bref and OHIP-14 questionnaires were correlated by affinity. The convergence between WHOQOL-Bref and OHIP-14 dimensions was analyzed by Spearman’s correlation coefficients. Results: The social relations dimension of the WHOQOL-Bref presented the greatest mean (18.24 ± 2.30). The physical pain dimension of the OHIP-14 presented a median of 1.0 (0.0 – 3.0). All correlations between the WHOQOL-Bref and OHIP-14 dimensions were significant, negative and associated with a low magnitude. The correlation between WHOQOL-physical and OHIP-functional limitation, OHIP-physical pain, OHIP-physical disability and OHIPhandicap were – 0.164, – 0.262, – 0.196 and – 0.125 respectively. WHOQOL-psychological was associated with OHIP-psychological discomfort and OHIP-psychological disability, and WHOQOL-social showed an association with OHIP-social disability. Conclusions: All correlations analyzed had a positive association of low magnitude. Despite the fact that the WHOQOL-Bref and OHIP-14 instruments have related dimensions, they measure physical, psychological and social relations differently.Investigar se existe convergência entre as dimensões da versão abreviada do questionário da Organização Mundial da Saúde sobre Qualidade de vida (WHOQOLBref) e do questionário Perfil do Impacto de Saúde Bucal-14 (OHIP-14). Métodos: Neste estudo transversal, uma amostra randomizada de 872 idosos do sul do Brasil foram avaliados. Questionários sobre informações de dados sociodemográficos e de qualidade de vida em geral (WHOQOLBref ) e de qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal (OHIP-14) foram utilizados. Foi utilizada estatística descritiva para analisar os questionários WHOQOL-Bref e OHIP-14. As dimensões dos questionários WHOQOL-Bref e OHIP-14 foram correlacionas por afinidade. A convergência entre as dimensões do WHOQOL-Bref e do OHIP-14 foi analisada pelos coeficientes de correlação de Spearman. Resultados: A dimensão relação social do WHOQOL-Bref foi a que apresentou maior média (18.24 ± 2.30). A dimensão dor física do OHIP-14 apresentou mediana 1.0 (0.0 – 3.0). Todas as correlações entre as dimensões do WHOQOL-Bref e do OHIP-14 foram significativas, negativas e com associação de baixa magnitude. As correlações entre WHOQOL- físico e OHIP- limitação funcional, OHIP-dor física, OHIP-limitação física e OHIP-desvantagem foram – 0,164, – 0,262, – 0,196 e – 0,125, respectivamente. WHOQOL-psicológico foi associado com OHIP-disconforto psicológico e OHIP-limitação psicológica, e WHOQOL-social mostrou associação com OHIP-limitação social. Conclusões: Todas as correlações analisadas apresentaram associação positiva de baixa magnitude. Apesar dos questionários WHOQOL-Bref and OHIP-14 apresentarem dimensões relacionadas, eles medem as relações físicas, sociais e psicológicas de maneira diferente
