    Examining the Contribution of Information Technology Toward Productivity and Profitability in U.S. Retail Banking

    There has been much debate on whether or not the investment in Information Technology (IT) provides improvements in productivity and business efficiency. Several studies both at the industry-level and at the firm-level have contributed differing understandings of this phenomenon. Of late, however, firm-level studies, primarily in the manufacturing sector, have shown that there are significant positive contributions from IT investments toward productivity. This study examines the effect of IT investment on both productivity and profitability in the retail banking sector. Using data collected through a major study of retail banking institutions in the United States, this paper concludes that additional investment in IT capital may have no real benefits and may be more of a strategic necessity to stay even with the competition. However, the results indicate that there are substantially high returns to increase in investment in IT labor, and that retail banks need to shift their emphasis in IT investment from capital to labor.

    DNA-Ormocer based biocomposite for fabrication of photonic structures

    We report microfabrication of high quality photonicstructures such as two-dimensional photonic crystals and beam splitters from a high DNA load, photosensitive Ormocer nanocomposite. This nanocomposite combines the high dye loading capacity of DNA with the photopatternability and hardness of the Ormocer. The fabrication is performed with the two-photon lithography method. Detailed studies of the deoxyribonucleic acid distribution in the fabricatedstructures are conducted with Raman microscopy. We also demonstrate that the deoxyribonucleic acid based nanocomposite films cast on glass substrates are of high enough quality to support amplified spontaneous emission from dyes intercalated in the deoxyribonucleic acid

    Quantum Tunneling in Nuclear Fusion

    Recent theoretical advances in the study of heavy ion fusion reactions below the Coulomb barrier are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to new ways of analyzing data, such as studying barrier distributions; new approaches to channel coupling, such as the path integral and Green function formalisms; and alternative methods to describe nuclear structure effects, such as those using the Interacting Boson Model. The roles of nucleon transfer, asymmetry effects, higher-order couplings, and shape-phase transitions are elucidated.     Structure and enzymatic mechanism of a moonlighting dUTPase

    Genome integrity requires well controlled cellular pools of nucleotides. dUTPases are responsible for regulating cellular dUTP levels and providing dUMP for dTTP biosynthesis. In Staphylococcus, phage dUTPases are also suggested to be involved in a moonlighting function regulating the expression of pathogenicity-island genes. Staphylococcal phage trimeric dUTPase sequences include a specific insertion that is not found in other organisms. Here, a 2.1 Å resolution three-dimensional structure of a [varphi]11 phage dUTPase trimer with complete localization of the phage-specific insert, which folds into a small [beta]-pleated mini-domain reaching out from the dUTPase core surface, is presented. The insert mini-domains jointly coordinate a single Mg2+ ion per trimer at the entrance to the threefold inner channel. Structural results provide an explanation for the role of Asp95, which is suggested to have functional significance in the moonlighting activity, as the metal-ion-coordinating moiety potentially involved in correct positioning of the insert. Enzyme-kinetics studies of wild-type and mutant constructs show that the insert has no major role in dUTP binding or cleavage and provide a description of the elementary steps (fast binding of substrate and release of products). In conclusion, the structural and kinetic data allow insights into both the phage-specific characteristics and the generally conserved traits of [varphi]11 phage dUTPase
