Electronic Structure of Te and As Covered Si(211)
Electronic and atomic structures of the clean, and As and Te covered Si(211)
surface are studied using pseudopotential density functional method. The clean
surface is found to have (2 X 1) and rebonded (1 X 1) reconstructions as stable
surface structures, but no \pi-bonded chain reconstruction. Binding energies of
As and Te adatoms at a number of symmetry sites on the ideal and (2 X 1)
reconstructed surfaces have been calculated because of their importance in the
epitaxial growth of CdTe and other materials on the Si(211) surface. The
special symmetry sites on these surfaces having the highest binding energies
for isolated As and Te adatoms are identified. But more significantly, several
sites are found to be nearly degenerate in binding energy values. This has
important consequences for epitaxial growth processes. Optimal structures
calculated for 0.5 ML of As and Te coverage reveal that the As adatoms dimerize
on the surface while the Te adatoms do not. However, both As and Te covered
surfaces are found to be metallic in nature.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

We propose a method for detecting dyadic interactions: fine-grained, coordinated interactions between two people. Our model is capable of recognizing interactions such as a hand shake or a high five, and locating them in time and space. At the core of our method is a pictorial structures model that additionally takes into account the fine-grained movements around the joints of interest during the interaction. Compared to a bag-of-words approach, our method not only allows us to detect the specific type of actions more accurately, but it also provides the specific location of the interaction. The model is trained with both video data and body joint estimates obtained from Kinect. During testing, only video data is required. To demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, we introduce the ShakeFive dataset that consists of videos and Kinect data of hand shake and high five interactions. On this dataset, we obtain a mean average precision of 49.56%, outperforming a bag-of-words approach by 23.32%. We further demonstrate that the model can be learned from just a few interactions
Systemic long-term metabolic effects of acute non-severe paediatric burn injury
A growing body of evidence supports the concept of a systemic response to non-severe thermal trauma. This provokes an immunosuppressed state that predisposes paediatric patients to poor recovery and increased risk of secondary morbidity. In this study, to understand the long-term systemic effects of non-severe burns in children, targeted mass spectrometry assays for biogenic amines and tryptophan metabolites were performed on plasma collected from child burn patients at least three years post injury and compared to age and sex matched non-burn (healthy) controls. A panel of 12 metabolites, including urea cycle intermediates, aromatic amino acids and quinolinic acid were present in significantly higher concentrations in children with previous burn injury. Correlation analysis of metabolite levels to previously measured cytokine levels indicated the presence of multiple cytokine-metabolite associations in the burn injury participants that were absent from the healthy controls. These data suggest that there is a sustained immunometabolic imprint of non-severe burn trauma, potentially linked to long-term immune changes that may contribute to the poor long-term health outcomes observed in children after burn injury
Generalized glycogen storage and cardiomegaly in a knockout mouse model of Pompe disease
Glycogen storage disease type II (GSDII; Pompe disease), caused by
inherited deficiency of acid alpha-glucosidase, is a lysosomal disorder
affecting heart and skeletal muscles. A mouse model of this disease was
obtained by targeted disruption of the murine acid alpha-glucosidase gene
(Gaa) in embryonic stem cells. Homozygous knockout mice (Gaa -/-) lack Gaa
mRNA and have a virtually complete acid alpha-glucosidase deficiency.
Glycogen-containing lysosomes are detected soon after birth in liver,
heart and skeletal muscle cells. By 13 weeks of age, large focal deposits
of glycogen have formed. Vacuolar spaces stain positive for acid
phosphatase as a sign of lysosomal pathology. Both male and female
knockout mice are fertile and can be intercrossed to produce progeny. The
first born knockout mice are at present 9 months old. Overt clinical
symptoms are still absent, but the heart is typically enlarged and the
electrocardiogram is abnormal. The mouse model will help greatly to
understand the pathogenic mechanism of GSDII and is a valuable instrument
to explore the efficacy of different therapeutic interventions
Nonperturbative features of the axial current
We study the nonperturbative structure of the axial current and evaluate the
two-point light-cone distribution amplitudes (DA) associated with the
correlator \int d\xi
exp(-iq\xi) within the
instanton vacuum model in the leading order in O(1/N_c). Due to the built-in
chiral symmetry, four of eight axial DAs are related to that for pions.
Knowledge of these nonperturbative objects is important for phenomenological
study of high-energy neutrino interactions and semileptonic decays of heavy
quarks. We provide a code for evaluation of these DAs and an interpolation
formula valid in the region Q^2 < 1 GeV^2.Comment: 22 pages, 10 Figures, improved and extended presentation. We provide

Estimates of hadron azimuthal anisotropy from multiparton interactions in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 14 TeV
We estimate the amount of collective "elliptic flow" expected at mid-rapidity
in proton-proton (p-p) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC),
assuming that any possible azimuthal anisotropy of the produced hadrons with
respect to the plane of the reaction follows the same overlap-eccentricity and
particle-density scalings as found in high-energy heavy ion collisions. Using a
Glauber eikonal model, we compute the p-p eccentricities, transverse areas and
particle-multiplicities for various phenomenological parametrisations of the
proton spatial density. For realistic proton transverse profiles, we find
integrated elliptic flow v2 parameters below 3% in p-p collisions at sqrt(s) =

High Altitude test of RPCs for the ARGO-YBJ experiment
A 50 m**2 RPC carpet was operated at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory
(Tibet) located 4300 m a.s.l. The performance of RPCs in detecting Extensive
Air Showers was studied. Efficiency and time resolution measurements at the
pressure and temperature conditions typical of high mountain laboratories, are

The ARGO-YBJ Experiment Progresses and Future Extension
Gamma ray source detection above 30TeV is an encouraging approach for finding
galactic cosmic ray origins. All sky survey for gamma ray sources using wide
field of view detector is essential for population accumulation for various
types of sources above 100GeV. To target the goals, the ARGO-YBJ experiment has
been established. Significant progresses have been made in the experiment. A
large air shower detector array in an area of 1km2 is proposed to boost the
sensitivity. Hybrid detection with multi-techniques will allow a good
discrimination between different types of primary particles, including photons
and protons, thus enable an energy spectrum measurement for individual specie.
Fluorescence light detector array will extend the spectrum measurement above
100PeV where the second knee is located. An energy scale determined by balloon
experiments at 10TeV will be propagated to ultra high energy cosmic ray
experiments
Measurement of W Polarisation at LEP
The three different helicity states of W bosons produced in the reaction e+
e- -> W+ W- -> l nu q q~ at LEP are studied using leptonic and hadronic W
decays. Data at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt s = 183-209 GeV are used to
measure the polarisation of W bosons, and its dependence on the W boson
production angle. The fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured
to be 0.218 \pm 0.027 \pm 0.016 where the first uncertainty is statistical and
the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation
Search for Anomalous Couplings in the Higgs Sector at LEP
Anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson are searched for through the processes
e^+ e^- -> H gamma, e^+ e^- -> e^+ e^- H and e^+ e^- -> HZ. The mass range 70
GeV < m_H < 190 GeV is explored using 602 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies
sqrt(s)=189-209 GeV. The Higgs decay channels H -> ffbar, H -> gamma gamma, H
-> Z\gamma and H -> WW^(*) are considered and no evidence is found for
anomalous Higgs production or decay. Limits on the anomalous couplings d, db,
Delta(g1z), Delta(kappa_gamma) and xi^2 are derived as well as limits on the H
-> gamma gamma and H -> Z gamma decay rates
