Analysis of bone impairment by 3D DXA hip measures in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism: a pilot study

primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been related to bone loss. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) cannot distinguish between trabecular and cortical bone compartments but the recently developed 3D-DXA software might overcome this issue.
Objective
to examine the differences in DXA-derived areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and 3D-DXA parameters at the hip site between patients with PHPT and a healthy control group.

80 adults (59.5 ± 9.1 yrs), 40 with PHPT and 40 healthy age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
Measures
aBMD (g/cm2) of the femoral neck, trochanter, shaft and total hip was assessed using DXA. Cortical surface (sBMD, mg/cm2), cortical volumetric BMD (vBMD, mg/cm3), trabecular vBMD (mg/cm3), integral vBMD (mg/cm3) and cortical thickness (mm) was assessed using 3D-DXA software.
Results
mean-adjusted values showed lower aBMD (7.5% to 12.2%, effect size: 0.51-1.01) in the PHPT group compared to the control group (all p<0.05). 3D-DXA revealed bone impairment (3.7% to 8.5%, effect size: 0.47-0.65) in patients with PHPT, mainly in cortical parameters (all p<0.05). However, differences in trabecular vBMD were not statistically significant (p=0.055). The 3D mapping showed lower cortical sBMD, cortical vBMD and cortical thickness at the trochanter and diaphysis in the PHPT group (p<0.05) compared to the control group. In both groups, the presence of osteopenia or osteoporosis is related to lower cortical bone.
Conclusions
aBMD and cortical 3D parameters are impaired in patients with PHPT versus healthy controls. The vBMD of the trabecular compartment seems to be affected though to a lower extent.Fondo de Investigación SanitariaFEDERLa Caix
Extended-Spectrum-Beta-Lactamases, AmpC Beta-Lactamases and Plasmid Mediated Quinolone Resistance in Klebsiella spp. from Companion Animals in Italy
We report the genetic characterization of 15 Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) and 4 isolates of K. oxytoca (KO) from clinical cases in dogs and cats and showing extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC) resistance. Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC genes, plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) and co-resistances were investigated. Among KP isolates, ST101 clone was predominant (8/15, 53%), followed by ST15 (4/15, 27%). ST11 and ST340, belonging to Clonal Complex (CC)11, were detected in 2012 (3/15, 20%). MLST on KP isolates corresponded well with PFGE results, with 11 different PFGE patterns observed, including two clusters of two (ST340) and four (ST101) indistinguishable isolates, respectively. All isolates harbored at least one ESBL or AmpC gene, all carried on transferable plasmids (IncR, IncFII, IncI1, IncN), and 16/19 were positive for PMQR genes (qnr family or aac(6')-Ib-cr). The most frequent ESBL was CTX-M-15 (11/19, 58%), detected in all KP ST101, in one KP ST15 and in both KP ST340. blaCTX-M-15 was carried on IncR plasmids in all but one KP isolate. All KP ST15 isolates harbored different ESC resistance genes and different plasmids, and presented the non-transferable blaSHV-28 gene, in association with blaCTX-M-15, blaCTX-M-1 (on IncR, or on IncN), blaSHV-2a (on IncR) or blaCMY-2 genes (on IncI1). KO isolates were positive for blaCTX-M-9 gene (on IncHI2), or for the blaSHV-12 and blaDHA-1 genes (on IncL/M). They were all positive for qnr genes, and one also for the aac(6')-Ib-cr gene. All Klebsiella isolates showed multiresistance towards aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, trimethoprim and amphenicols, mediated by strA/B, aadA2, aadB, ant (2")-Ia, aac(6')-Ib, sul, tet, dfr and cat genes in various combinations. The emergence in pets of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella with ESBL, AmpC and PMQR determinants, poses further and serious challenges in companion animal therapy and raise concerns for possible bi-directional transmission between pets and humans, especially at household level
Observation of two new baryon resonances
Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb recorded by the LHCb experiment.
In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content are
expected in this mass region: the spin-parity and
states, denoted and .
Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass
differences and the width of the heavier state to be
MeV,
MeV,
MeV, where the first and second
uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the
lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of
MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative
production rates of these states are also reported.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Observation of the decay
The first observation of the decay is reported. The
study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to
of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector. The
significance of the signal is standard deviations. The branching fraction
is measured to be , where the third uncertainty comes from the
branching fraction that is used as a normalisation.
In addition, the charge asymmetries of and
, which are control channels, are measured to be and , respectively. All results are consistent with
theoretical expectations
First observation and amplitude analysis of the decay
The decay is observed in a data sample
corresponding to of collision data recorded by the LHCb
experiment during 2011 and 2012. Its branching fraction is measured to be
where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from
the branching fraction of the normalisation channel , respectively. An amplitude analysis of the resonant
structure of the decay is used to measure the
contributions from quasi-two-body ,
, and
decays, as well as from nonresonant sources. The

Study of and decays and determination of the CKM angle
We report a study of the suppressed and favored
decays, where the neutral meson is detected
through its decays to the and CP-even and
final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton
collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb. We observe the first significant
signals in the CP-even final states of the meson for both the suppressed
and favored modes, as well as
in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed final state of the decay. Evidence for the ADS suppressed decay , with , is also presented. From the observed
yields in the , and their
charge conjugate decay modes, we measure the value of the weak phase to be
. This is one of the most precise

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of decays
The differential branching fraction of the rare decay is measured as a function of , the
square of the dimuon invariant mass. The analysis is performed using
proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0
\mbox{ fb}^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment. Evidence of signal is
observed in the region below the square of the mass. Integrating
over 15 < q^{2} < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4 the branching fraction is measured as
d\mathcal{B}(\Lambda^{0}_{b} \rightarrow \Lambda \mu^+\mu^-)/dq^2 = (1.18 ^{+
0.09} _{-0.08} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-7} ( \mbox{GeV}^{2}/c^{4})^{-1},
where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the
normalisation mode, , respectively.
In the intervals where the signal is observed, angular distributions are
studied and the forward-backward asymmetries in the dimuon ()
and hadron () systems are measured for the first time. In the
range 15 < q^2 < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4 they are found to be A^{l}_{\rm FB} =
-0.05 \pm 0.09 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)} and A^{h}_{\rm FB} =
-0.29 \pm 0.07 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)}.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, Erratum adde
Search for hidden-sector bosons in decays
A search is presented for hidden-sector bosons, , produced in the decay
, with and
. The search is performed using -collision data
corresponding to 3.0 fb collected with the LHCb detector. No significant
signal is observed in the accessible mass range
MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product
as
a function of the mass and lifetime of the boson. These limits are of
the order of for lifetimes less than 100 ps over most of the
range, and place the most stringent constraints to date on many
