Structure and Phase Transitions of the 6, 6-Cyclopropane Isomer of C_ {61} H_ {2}
We have used x-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry to study the crystalline structures and thermal behavior of the 6,6-cyclopropane isomer of C61H2. At room temperature, the C61H2 cyclopropane molecules, like those of the 6,5-annulene isomer and C60O epoxide, are orientationally disordered and crystallize on a face-centered-cubic lattice such that their methylene groups are statistically disordered among the octahedral voids. Sensitive Chandra coverage of a representative sample of weak-line quasars::revealing the full range of X-ray properties
We present deeper Chandra observations for weak-line quasars (WLQs) in a
representative sample that previously had limited X-ray constraints, and
perform X-ray photometric analyses to reveal the full range of X-ray properties
of WLQs. Only 5 of the 32 WLQs included in this representative sample remain
X-ray undetected after these observations, and a stacking analysis shows that
these 5 have an average X-ray weakness factor of > 85. One of the WLQs in the
sample that was known to have extreme X-ray variability, SDSS J1539+3954,
exhibited dramatic X-ray variability again: it changed from an X-ray normal
state to an X-ray weak state within ~ 3 months in the rest frame. This short
timescale for an X-ray flux variation by a factor of 9 further
supports the thick disk and outflow (TDO) model proposed to explain the X-ray
and multiwavelength properties of WLQs. The overall distribution of the
X-ray-to-optical properties of WLQs suggests that the TDO has an average
covering factor of the X-ray emitting region of ~ 0.5, and the column density
of the TDO can range from to
, which leads to different levels of

HI Observations of the Stephan's Quintet
Using the VLA, we have made spectral-line and continuum observations of the
neutral hydrogen in the direction of the compact group of galaxies Stephan's
Quintet. The high-velocity clouds between 5600 and 6600 km/s, the disk of the
foreground galaxy, NGC 7320, at 800 km/s, the extended continuum ridge near the
center of the group, and 3 faint dwarf-like galaxies in the surrounding field
were imaged with C, CS, and D arrays. Four of the HI clouds previously detected
are confirmed. The two largest HI features are coincident with and concentrated
mainly along separate large tidal tails that extend eastward. The most diffuse
of the four clouds is resolved into two clumps, one coincide with tidal
features south of NGC 7318a and the other devoid of any detectable stellar or
Halfa sources. The two compact clouds, along the same line of sight, have peak
emission at luminous infrared and bright Halfa sources probably indicative of
star-forming activity. The total amount of HI detected at high redshifts is ~
10**10Msol. As in previous HI studies of the group, no detectable emission was
measured at the positions of any high-redshift galaxies so that any HI still
bound to their disks must be less than 2.4 x 10**7Msol.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ and tentatively scheduled for the May

We investigated whether smoking is associated with mutations in the Von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) gene in 337 cases of sporadic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) among 120 852 people followed for 11.3 years; the findings suggest that smoking causes RCC independently of VHL gene mutations
SCExAO/MEC and CHARIS Discovery of a Low Mass, 6 AU-Separation Companion to HIP 109427 using Stochastic Speckle Discrimination and High-Contrast Spectroscopy
We report the direct imaging discovery of a low-mass companion to the nearby
accelerating A star, HIP 109427, with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive
Optics (SCExAO) instrument coupled with the MKID Exoplanet Camera (MEC) and
CHARIS integral field spectrograph. CHARIS data reduced with reference star PSF
subtraction yield 1.1-2.4 m spectra. MEC reveals the companion in and
band at a comparable signal-to-noise ratio using stochastic speckle
discrimination, with no PSF subtraction techniques. Combined with complementary
follow-up photometry from Keck/NIRC2, the SCExAO data favors a
spectral type, effective temperature, and luminosity of M4-M5.5, 3000-3200 ,
and , respectively.
Relative astrometry of HIP 109427 B from SCExAO/CHARIS and Keck/NIRC2, and
complementary Gaia-Hipparcos absolute astrometry of the primary favor a
semimajor axis of au, an eccentricity of
, an inclination of degrees, and a
dynamical mass of . This work shows the
potential for extreme AO systems to utilize speckle statistics in addition to
widely-used post-processing methods to directly image faint companions to

Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7
(3.6) times the standard model prediction.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a W boson in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data
collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1. In events consistent with the decay of the
Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the W boson to an electron or muon and a
neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross
section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a
Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) times
