Flood-risk mapping: contributions towards an enhanced assessment of extreme events and associated risks
Currently, a shift from classical flood protection as engineering task towards integrated flood risk management concepts can be observed. In this context, a more consequent consideration of extreme events which exceed the design event of flood protection structures and failure scenarios such as dike breaches have to be investigated. Therefore, this study aims to enhance existing methods for hazard and risk assessment for extreme events and is divided into three parts. In the first part, a regionalization approach for flood peak discharges was further developed and substantiated, especially regarding recurrence intervals of 200 to 10 000 years and a large number of small ungauged catchments. Model comparisons show that more confidence in such flood estimates for ungauged areas and very long recurrence intervals may be given as implied by statistical analysis alone. The hydraulic simulation in the second part is oriented towards hazard mapping and risk analyses covering the whole spectrum of relevant flood events. As the hydrodynamic simulation is directly coupled with a GIS, the results can be easily processed as local inundation depths for spatial risk analyses. For this, a new GIS-based software tool was developed, being presented in the third part, which enables estimations of the direct flood damage to single buildings or areas based on different established stage-damage functions. Furthermore, a new multifactorial approach for damage estimation is presented, aiming at the improvement of damage estimation on local scale by considering factors like building quality, contamination and precautionary measures. The methods and results from this study form the base for comprehensive risk analyses and flood management strategies
CEDIM Risk Explorer ? a map server solution in the project "Risk Map Germany"
International audienceThe project "Risk Map Germany" at the Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM) aims at visualizing hazards, vulnerabilities and risks associated with natural and man made hazards. CEDIM as an interdisciplinary project unified various expertise like earthquake, storm and flood disaster research. Our aim was to visualize the manifold data exploration in thematic maps. The implemented Web-GIS solution "CEDIM Risk Explorer" represents the map visualizations of the different risk research. This Web-GIS integrates results from interdisciplinary work as maps of hazard, vulnerability and risk in one application and offers therefore new cognitions to the user by enabling visual comparisons. The present paper starts with a project introduction and a literature review of distributed GIS environments. Further the methods of map realization and visualization in the selected technical solution is worked out. Finally, the conclusions give the perspectives for future developments to the "CEDIM Risk Explorer"
11-keto-alpha-boswellic acid, a novel triterpenoid from Boswellia spp. with chemotaxonomic potential and antitumor activity against triple-negative breast cancer cells
Boswellic acids, and particularly 11-keto-boswellic acids, triterpenoids derived from the genus Boswellia (Burseraceae), are known for their anti-inflammatory and potential antitumor efficacy. Although boswellic acids generally occur as α-isomers (oleanane type) and β-isomers (ursane type), 11-keto-boswellic acid (KBA) was found only as the β-isomer, β-KBA. Here, the existence and natural occurrence of the respective α-isomer, 11-keto-α-boswellic acid (α-KBA), is demonstrated for the first time. Initially, α-KBA was synthesized and characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and a highly selective, sensitive, and accurate high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method was developed by Design of Experiments (DoE) using a pentafluorophenyl stationary phase. This method allowed the selective quantification of individual 11-keto-boswellic acids and provided evidence for α-KBA in Boswellia spp. oleogum resins. The contents of α-KBA as well as further boswellic acids and the composition of essential oils were used to chemotaxonomically classify 41 Boswellia oleogum resins from 9 different species. Moreover, α-KBA exhibited cytotoxicity against three treatment-resistant triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines in vitro and also induced apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 xenografts in vivo. The respective β-isomer and the acetylated form demonstrate higher cytotoxic efficacies against TNBC cells. This provides further insights into the structure-activity relationship of boswellic acids and could support future developments of potential anti-inflammatory and antitumor drugs
Longitudinal double spin asymmetries in single hadron quasi-real photoproduction at high
We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries for single
hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality <
1(GeV/) for transverse hadron momenta in the range 0.7
GeV/ to 4 GeV/ . They were determined using COMPASS data taken
with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/ or 200 GeV/ impinging on
polarised or targets. The experimental
asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are
sensitive to the gluon polarisation inside the nucleon in the range
of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons
Interplay among transversity induced asymmetries in hadron leptoproduction
In the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark several left-right
asymmetries are possible for the hadrons in the jet. When only one unpolarized
hadron is selected, it exhibits an azimuthal modulation known as Collins
effect. When a pair of oppositely charged hadrons is observed, three
asymmetries can be considered, a di-hadron asymmetry and two single hadron
asymmetries. In lepton deep inelastic scattering on transversely polarized
nucleons all these asymmetries are coupled with the transversity distribution.
From the high statistics COMPASS data on oppositely charged hadron-pair
production we have investigated for the first time the dependence of these
three asymmetries on the difference of the azimuthal angles of the two hadrons.
The similarity of transversity induced single and di-hadron asymmetries is
discussed. A new analysis of the data allows to establish quantitative
relationships among them, providing for the first time strong experimental
indication that the underlying fragmentation mechanisms are all driven by a
common physical process.Comment: 6 figure

Measurement of the charged-pion polarisability
The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering,
, at centre-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion
masses. The process is embedded in the reaction
, which is initiated by
190\,GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasi-real photons
is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum
transfers, \,(GeV/). From a sample of 63\,000 events the
pion electric polarisability is determined to be $\alpha_\pi\ =\ (\,2.0\ \pm\
0.6_{\mbox{\scriptsize stat}}\ \pm\ 0.7_{\mbox{\scriptsize syst}}\,) \times
10^{-4}\,\mbox{fm}^3\alpha_\pi=-\beta_\pi$, which
relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarisabilities. It is the most
precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong
interaction, that has been addressed since long by various methods with
conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated
measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral
perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for
which the cross-section behavior is unambigiously known, was performed for an
independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.Comment: Published version: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Detection of variable VHE gamma-ray emission from the extra-galactic gamma-ray binary LMC P3
Context. Recently, the high-energy (HE, 0.1-100 GeV) -ray emission
from the object LMC P3 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been discovered
to be modulated with a 10.3-day period, making it the first extra-galactic
-ray binary.
Aims. This work aims at the detection of very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV)
-ray emission and the search for modulation of the VHE signal with the
orbital period of the binary system.
Methods. LMC P3 has been observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System
(H.E.S.S.); the acceptance-corrected exposure time is 100 h. The data set has
been folded with the known orbital period of the system in order to test for
variability of the emission. Energy spectra are obtained for the orbit-averaged
data set, and for the orbital phase bin around the VHE maximum.
Results. VHE -ray emission is detected with a statistical
significance of 6.4 . The data clearly show variability which is
phase-locked to the orbital period of the system. Periodicity cannot be deduced
from the H.E.S.S. data set alone. The orbit-averaged luminosity in the
TeV energy range is erg/s. A luminosity of erg/s is reached during 20% of the orbit. HE and VHE
-ray emissions are anti-correlated. LMC P3 is the most luminous
-ray binary known so far.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&
Resonance Production and S-wave in at 190 GeV/c
The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on
diffractively produced final states using a negative pion
beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data
set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion
mass, GeV/c , and in 11 bins of the reduced
four-momentum transfer squared, (GeV/c) . This
two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance
production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to
more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant production. In this paper,
we present detailed studies on selected partial waves with , , , , and . In these waves, we observe
the well-known ground-state mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson
decaying into . In addition, we present the results
of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the subsystem with
in various partial waves from the
data. Evidence is found for correlation of the and
appearing as intermediate isobars in the decay of the known

Leading-order determination of the gluon polarisation from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data
Using a novel analysis technique, the gluon polarisation in the nucleon is
re-evaluated using the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry measured in the cross
section of semi-inclusive single-hadron muoproduction with photon virtuality
. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at
CERN using a 160 GeV/ polarised muon beam impinging on a polarised LiD
target. By analysing the full range in hadron transverse momentum ,
the different -dependences of the underlying processes are separated
using a neural-network approach. In the absence of pQCD calculations at
next-to-leading order in the selected kinematic domain, the gluon polarisation
is evaluated at leading order in pQCD at a hard scale of . It is determined in three intervals
of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons, , covering the
range ~ and does not exhibit a significant
dependence on . The average over the three intervals, at
, suggests that the gluon polarisation
is positive in the measured range.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
