    Where could we go? Recommendations for groups in location-based social networks

Additionally, they provide users with recommendations for Points of Interest (POI) they have not visited before. This functionality is of great importance for users of LBSNs, as it allows them to discover interesting places in populous cities that are not easy to explore. For this reason, previous research has focused on providing recommendations to LBSN users. Nevertheless, while most existing work focuses on recommendations for individual users, techniques to provide recommendations to groups of users are scarce. In this paper, we consider the problem of recommending a list of POIs to a group of users in the areas that the group frequents. Our data consist of activity on Swarm, a social networking app by Foursquare, and our results demonstrate that our proposed Geo-Group-Recommender (GGR), a class of hybrid recommender systems that combine the group geographical preferences using Kernel Density Estimation, category and location features and group check-ins outperform a large number of other recommender systems. Moreover, we find evidence that user preferences differ both in venue category and in location between individual and group activities. We also show that combining individual recommendations using group aggregation strategies is not as good as building a profile for a group. Our experiments show that (GGR) outperforms the baselines in terms of precision and recall at different cutoffs.Peer reviewe

    Enhancement of interfacial adhesion between starch and graftedpoly(epsilon-caprolactone)

    [EN] The use of a modified poly(Epsilon-caprolactone) (gPCL) to enhance polymer miscibility in films based on ther-moplastic starch (S) and poly(Epsilon-caprolactone) is reported. PCL was functionalized by grafting with maleicanyhdride (MA) and/or glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by reactive blending in a batch mixer. gPCL basedmaterials were analysed in terms of their grafting degree, structural and thermal properties. Blends basedon starch and PCL (wt. ratio 80:20) with including gPCL (0, 2.5 and 5 wt.%), as a compatibilizer, wereobtained by extrusion and compression moulding, and their structural, thermal, mechanical and bar-rier properties were investigated. Blends containing gPCL evidenced better interfacial adhesion betweenstarch and PCL domains, as deduced from both structural (XRD, FTIR, SEM) and bulk properties (DSC, TGA).Moreover, grafted PCL-based compatibilizers greatly improved functional properties of S-PCL blend films,as pointed out from mechanical performance and higher barrier properties, valuable to meet the foodpackaging requirements.The authors gratefully acknowledge the project MAREA, "Materiali Avanzati per la Ricerca ed il comparto Agroalimentare"-in the frame of National Operative Program (PON 2007-2013) and Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (Spain) throughout the project AGL2013-42989 for their research financial support.     Finite temperature pion vector form factors in Chiral Perturbation Theory

    We discuss the thermal behaviour of the pion vector form factors and calculate them in one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. The perturbative result is used to analyze the TT-dependent electromagnetic pion charge radius, obtaining a rough estimate of the deconfinement critical temperature. Imposing thermal unitarity, we generate the ρ\rho resonance pole for the form factor in the center of mass frame. The ρ\rho peak height in the modulus of the form factor decreases for increasing temperature, while its width increases and the peak position is slightly shifted downwards for T≃T\simeq 150 MeV. These results point in the direction suggested by many analysis of dilepton production data in relativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, final version to appear in Phys.Lett.B, added references and comments, abstract change

    Gene products and processes contributing to lanthanide homeostasis and methanol metabolism in \u3cem\u3eMethylorubrum extorquens\u3c/em\u3e AM1

    Lanthanide elements have been recently recognized as “new life metals” yet much remains unknown regarding lanthanide acquisition and homeostasis. In Methylorubrum extorquens AM1, the periplasmic lanthanide-dependent methanol dehydrogenase XoxF1 produces formaldehyde, which is lethal if allowed to accumulate. This property enabled a transposon mutagenesis study and growth studies to confirm novel gene products required for XoxF1 function. The identified genes encode an MxaD homolog, an ABC-type transporter, an aminopeptidase, a putative homospermidine synthase, and two genes of unknown function annotated as orf6 and orf7. Lanthanide transport and trafficking genes were also identified. Growth and lanthanide uptake were measured using strains lacking individual lanthanide transport cluster genes, and transmission electron microscopy was used to visualize lanthanide localization. We corroborated previous reports that a TonB-ABC transport system is required for lanthanide incorporation to the cytoplasm. However, cells were able to acclimate over time and bypass the requirement for the TonB outer membrane transporter to allow expression of xoxF1 and growth. Transcriptional reporter fusions show that excess lanthanides repress the gene encoding the TonB-receptor. Using growth studies along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrate that lanthanides are stored as cytoplasmic inclusions that resemble polyphosphate granules

    Improving Risk Stratification for Patients with Type 2 Myocardial Infarction

    BACKGROUND: Despite poor cardiovascular outcomes, there are no dedicated, validated risk stratification tools to guide investigation or treatment in type 2 myocardial infarction. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to derive and validate a risk stratification tool for the prediction of death or future myocardial infarction in patients with type 2 myocardial infarction. METHODS: The T2-risk score was developed in a prospective multicenter cohort of consecutive patients with type 2 myocardial infarction. Cox proportional hazards models were constructed for the primary outcome of myocardial infarction or death at 1 year using variables selected a priori based on clinical importance. Discrimination was assessed by area under the receiving-operating characteristic curve (AUC). Calibration was investigated graphically. The tool was validated in a single-center cohort of consecutive patients and in a multicenter cohort study from sites across Europe. RESULTS: There were 1,121, 250, and 253 patients in the derivation, single-center, and multicenter validation cohorts, with the primary outcome occurring in 27% (297 of 1,121), 26% (66 of 250), and 14% (35 of 253) of patients, respectively. The T2-risk score incorporating age, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, myocardial ischemia on electrocardiogram, heart rate, anemia, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and maximal cardiac troponin concentration had good discrimination (AUC: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.73-0.79) for the primary outcome and was well calibrated. Discrimination was similar in the consecutive patient (AUC: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.77-0.88) and multicenter (AUC: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.64-0.83) cohorts. T2-risk provided improved discrimination over the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events 2.0 risk score in all cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: The T2-risk score performed well in different health care settings and could help clinicians to prognosticate, as well as target investigation and preventative therapies more effectively.     Physical structure of the envelopes of intermediate-mass protostars

    Context: Intermediate mass protostars provide a bridge between low- and high-mass protostars. Furthermore, they are an important component of the UV interstellar radiation field. Despite their relevance, little is known about their formation process. Aims: We present a systematic study of the physical structure of five intermediate mass, candidate Class 0 protostars. Our two goals are to shed light on the first phase of intermediate mass star formation and to compare these protostars with low- and high-mass sources. Methods: We derived the dust and gas temperature and density profiles of the sample. We analysed all existing continuum data on each source and modelled the resulting SED with the 1D radiative transfer code DUSTY. The gas temperature was then predicted by means of a modified version of the code CHT96. Results: We found that the density profiles of five out of six studied intermediate mass envelopes are consistent with the predictions of the "inside-out" collapse theory.We compared several physical parameters, like the power law index of the density profile, the size, the mass, the average density, the density at 1000 AU and the density at 10 K of the envelopes of low-, intermediate, and high-mass protostars. When considering these various physical parameters, the transition between the three groups appears smooth, suggesting that the formation processes and triggers do not substantially differ

    Suboptimal maternal nutrition, during early fetal liver development, promotes lipid accumulation in the liver of obese offspring

    Maternal nutrition during the period of early organ development can modulate the offspring's ability to metabolise excess fat as young adults when exposed to an obesogenic environment. This study examined the hypothesis that exposing offspring to nutrient restriction coincident with early hepatogenesis would result in endocrine and metabolic adaptations that subsequently lead to increased ectopic lipid accumulation within the liver. Pregnant sheep were fed either 50 or 100% of total metabolisable energy requirements from 30 to 80 days gestation and 100% thereafter. At weaning, offspring were made obese, and at ∌1 year of age livers were sampled. Lipid infiltration and molecular indices of gluconeogenesis, lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function were measured. Although hepatic triglyceride accumulation was not affected by obesity per se, it was nearly doubled in obese offspring born to nutrient-restricted mothers. This adaptation was accompanied by elevated gene expression for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor Îł (PPARG) and its co-activator PGC1α, which may be indicative of changes in the rate of hepatic fatty acid oxidation. In contrast, maternal diet had no influence on the stimulatory effect of obesity on gene expression for a range of proteins involved in glucose metabolism and energy balance including glucokinase, glucocorticoid receptors and uncoupling protein 2. Similarly, although gene expressions for the insulin and IGF1 receptors were suppressed by obesity they were not influenced by the prenatal nutritional environment. In conclusion, excess hepatic lipid accumulation with juvenile obesity is promoted by suboptimal nutrition coincident with early development of the fetal liver
