    Research Support in Australian Academic Libraries: Services, Resources, and Relationships

    In the last decade Australian academic libraries have increasingly aligned their research support services with assessment criteria used in the national research evaluation exercise (Excellence for Research in Australia). The same period has seen growing interest in research impact outside of traditional measures, such as bibliometrics. Social media has provided opportunities for research dissemination and new tools, altmetrics, to measure these activities have emerged. This article reports on research into the extent and nature of research support services at Australian academic libraries, how the services are managed, and the factors that influence their development and delivery. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to compare the findings with an earlier study and to provide a deeper understanding of research support in Australia. Three key themes, services, staff and resourcing, and relationships, are discussed in relation to the management and challenges faced in providing research support

    Idealism, pragmatism, and the power of compromise in the negotiation of New Zealand's Zero Carbon Act

    Discursive choices made by policy entrepreneurs are an important factor in the development of climate change acts (CCAs). This article examines the extent to which such choices reflect the strategic need for CCA entrepreneurs to compromise pragmatically and modulate their policy preferences in order to secure the agreement needed for CCA adoption. Drawing upon theoretical insights from discursive institutionalism (DI) and policy entrepreneurship, this article analyses discursive choices during negotiations surrounding the New Zealand Zero Carbon Act (ZCA). The analysis shows that endogenous political-ideological constraints compelled entrepreneurial actors to modify first-choice preferences for emissions reduction legislation by reframing their coordinative discursive interventions to accommodate potentially oppositional groups. Further research is required into the conditions under which such strategies become discursively operational, to provide guidance to climate policy entrepreneurs as CCAs continue to diffuse globally

    Supporting healthy route choice for commuter cyclists: The trade-off between travel time and pollutant dose

    Cyclists form the most vulnerable road user group in terms of injury from traffic accidents, as well as exposure to traffic-related air pollution. Ironically, commuter cyclists are often motivated by improvement in health and fitness. Cycleways away from traffic with lower concentrations of pollutants from motorised vehicles sometimes result in longer distances and hence require longer travel times, while alternative routes sharing the road with other traffic, sometimes with buses, might result in exposure to higher pollutant concentrations. To help commuter cyclists achieve their objectives of getting to work in the shortest possible time and maximising their health benefits, we propose a bi-objective route choice model, with the minimisation of travel time and pollutant dose as the two objectives. A transport network information database is first constructed with comprehensive information on link type, lane width, gradient, link average speed, traffic volume, etc. such that both the travel time and the pollutant dose can be estimated at a reasonable level of accuracy. In particular, the pollutant dose will be dependent on the exercise level as well as the concentration of pollutants. Given an origin and a destination, to be provided by a cyclist, we apply a bi-objective shortest-path algorithm to determine an efficient set of routes such that neither the total travel time nor the total pollutant dose can be reduced without worsening the other. Profiles of this route choice set in terms of other useful information, such as elevation, and pollutant concentrations along the route can also be provided. With our model, cyclists can more easily trade off between commute time and pollutant dose. In cities with hilly terrain, such as in Auckland, New Zealand, such information can be expected to be extremely valuable for current and potential cyclists

    Track recommendation bias:Gender, migration background and SES bias over a 20-year period in the Dutch context

    Bias in track recommendations is an important mechanism, which causes education inequity in a tracked educational system (streaming). If teacher biases in track recommendations change over time, inequity in society and in the education system may also change. We investigated changes in track recommendation bias over time for gender, immigration status and socioeconomic status (SES), based on a longitudinal empirical study of nine cohorts of Dutch students in their final year (grade 6) of primary education in the period 1995-2014. An overview of educational and societal trends was provided, alongside the empirical analysis, to explain the findings in variation over time in track recommendation bias. Results indicate that the level of track recommendations provided to the students gradually increased over time. For a similar performance, a higher track recommendation was awarded in 2014 compared to 1995. This development coincided with an increase in parental education level, the valuing of education and the introduction of lower-status pre-vocational education tracks. Track recommendation bias favouring students with a migrant background and female students decreased, which coincided with growing cultural intolerance and attention to the boy problem'. Bias in track recommendations related to SES appeared stable, with only small deviations from year to year. The results of this study indicate that track recommendation bias and teacher considerations are dependent on time and context
