Enabling Low Cost Smart Road Traffic Sensing

Accurate traffic monitoring is a key aspect to develop Smart Mobility services. A road traffic monitoring system based on a network of sensors capturing together information from wireless interfaces of the devices inside the vehicles and also data about noise level is introduced here. This type of sensors obtain accurate road traffic flows and allow noise maps, that can be further analyzed to provide advanced services for mobility and pollution in the roads. Automatic face recognition of video sequences using self-eigenfaces

The objective of this work is to provide an efficient face recognition scheme useful for video indexing applications. In particular we are addressing the following problem: given a set of known images and given a video sequence to be indexed, find where the corresponding persons appear in the sequence. Conventional face detection schemes are not well suited for this application and alternate and more efficient schemes have to be developed. In this paper we have modified our original generic eigenface-based recognition scheme presented in [1] by introducing the concept of selfeigenfaces. The resulting scheme is very efficient to find specific face images and to cope with the different face conditions present in a video sequence. The main and final objective is to develop a tool to be used in the MPEG-7 standardization effort to help video indexing activities. Autodeterminación y discapacidad intelectual: un estudio piloto con padres de la asociación INTEGRA de Puebla

En este artículo se aborda el concepto de autodeterminación y se analiza el rol de las familias como principales agentes de apoyo. Además, se presenta un estudio piloto con padres y madres (n=15), con el objetivo de profundizar en sus percepciones acerca de la autodeterminación de sus hijos con discapacidad intelectual. Se confirma la necesi-dad de llevar a cabo programas de capacitación con las familias y superar los plantea-mientos basados en la sobreprotección y la dependencia. Entendemos que iniciativas como la aquí presentada, suponen un punto de partida ineludible para la mejora de la calidad de vida de las personas con discapacidad y de su familia

Determinación de un coeficiente que relacione las resistencias a la compresión y a la flexotracción calculadas de acuerdo a la normativa chilena para pavimentos de hormigón de la provincia de Talca

108 pLa presente memoria tiene como propósito determinar un factor que permita relacionar la resistencia a la compresión de un determinado pavimento de hormigón conociendo su resistencia a la flexotracción y viceversa. Esto es muy útil ya que, hasta antes de realizar este estudio, no existía ningún parámetro que relacionara ambas resistencias comprobado experimentalmente. Para ello, se realizaron hormigones de prueba según la normativa chilena vigente, los que fueron ensayados a los 28 días de edad tanto a la compresión como a la flexotracción respectivamente. Los grados de hormigón que fueron investigados en esta oportunidad fueron H-30 y H.35, que son los que actualmente se utilizan en proyectos de pavimento de hormigón. Cabe destacar que se tomó la precaución de elaborar el doble de muestras para el caso de que hubiese algún problema en cuanto a las muestras que se iban utilizar, pero que no fueron utilizadas debido a que no se presentaron inconvenientes a la hora de ser ensayadas. Una vez efectuados los ensayos, se analizaron los resultados obtenidos y se calcularon los factores con su respectiva desviación estándar mediante la expresión:Factor buscado =Resistencia a la compresión a los 28 días- Resistencia a la flexotacción a los 28 días

Paleoceanography of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific on millennial timescales

The occurrence of large scale and rapid climate shifts at millennial time-scales (suborbital) remains an enigma between records from high and low latitudes spanning the Late Quaternary. This thesis studies such variations in the eastern tropical North Pacific (ETNP) using marine sediment cores retrieved from Mexico and Nicaragua. The main goals are to understand the nature of millennial timescale climate-changes in the Pacific low latitudes, to identify the atmospheric and oceanic teleconnections involved, to document the impacts on the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and silicon, and their potential to regulate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) concentrations during the last two glacial cycles (the last 240,000 years before present). In this thesis, we use a suite of multi-proxy records from the Core MD02-2519, which are compared to others records from adjoining regions to study the climatic history of the ETNP at millennial timescales. The Core MD02-2519, was retrieved from 955 mbsl off NW Mexico. It is strategically located within the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), underlying the coastal upwelling and denitrification zones of the ETNP. The paleoceanography of the region is studied using proxy records of productivity, denitrification, intermediate water circulation and radiocarbon activity, which are discussed in 5 separated chapters. In Chapter 1, we use records of organic carbon (%OC) and diffuse spectral reflectivity (DSRa*) to document changes in productivity, which are shown in phase with Northern Hemisphere (NH) timing at millennial scale, suggesting a direct atmospheric teleconnection with higher northern latitudes. In Chapter 2, reconstruction of nitrogen isotope records (δ15N) show that abrupt changes in denitrification are in phase with NH timing over the last glacial period; however, the advection of heavy nitrate from southern sources is also documented, possibly from the denitrification zone off Peru-Chile. Records of opal (%opal – Chapter 3) and carbon isotopes from benthic foraminifera (δ13C-Uvigerina – Chapter 4) support the inference of oceanic teleconnections between the ETNP and the South Pacific via subthermocline circulation. In Chapter 4, the δ13C records also suggest that intermediate water circulation changed over glacial periods and terminations, being the result of intrusion of southern component waters. In Chapter 5, the reconstruction of radiocarbon activity (Δ14C) records from surface (planktonic foraminifera) and intermediate water (benthic foraminifera) suggest oceanic degassing of old-carbon from the deep ocean during the last termination. In this way, the ETNP upwelling system could be an important locus of CO2 release at millennial timescales

The main objective of this research work is to problematize about what we consider to be the basic elements for a systematized teaching exercise. At first we will analyze the importance and limits of considering ludic aspects in the classroom; we believe that one of the most important elements for good teaching is to encourage motivation and interest in students; another inescapable factor is to consider the inclusion of other disciplines and issues linked to political problems such as economic, social, philosophical, historical, cultural, among others, in order to fully understand the vicissitudes that contemporary law faces; assertive communication in which it is assumed that there will be a context of active listening by all those involved within the framework of correct, direct and respectful language; the responsibility that the teacher has to have a vision that is supported by different theoretical perspectives and not just a few accounts, that is, the ideological transparency of the academic person; the need to include flexibility in the evaluation, the ethical and political commitment of teaching to forge a path towards emancipation and, of course, the importance of consistency, that is, that the teacher has a parallelism between what he says and what it does. keywords: legal teaching; assertive communication; ideological transparency; emancipation; ethical commitment; political problems; economic and social problems; philosophical problems; cultural and historical issuesEl objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación es problematizar acerca de lo que consideramos son los elementos básicos para un ejercicio docente sistematizado. The entremés of Los habladores has had its critical swings. Some scholars attribute it to Cervantes, others to Lope, most consider it anonymous. Surprisingly we lacked a reliable edition. In this work, I do not intend to solve the authorship nor to propose an exhaustive analysis of the possible interesting aspects of the text. My main objective is to provide a reliable text, with a series of notes, and add a brief commentary to contextualize it.El entremés de Los habladores ha tenido sus vaivenes críticos. Existe en las Novelas Ejemplares una resonancia dual marcada ya desde el título que nos remite tanto al género del exemplum como al de la novella. La tensión entre el entretenimiento y el aprovechamiento de lo leído queda reflejada en el prólogo a través del retrato que el autor hace de sí mismo. En relación con esta múltiple naturaleza, se analizan en este trabajo las posibilidades interpretativas del autorretrato cervantino en los planos poético y estético, ético y autobiográfico. La forma burlesca y el tono jocoso de la descripción convive con matices que remiten a las profundas preocupaciones de un autor ya anciano que enfrenta la imagen decrépita de la senectud con el entusiasmo jovial de quien se sabe camino de la fama.There exists in the Novelas Ejemplares a dual resonance marked by a title that talks about both the genre of the exemplum and that of the novella. The tension between entertainment and learning remains refl ected in the prologue thanks to the portrait of the author made by himself. In relation with this multiple nature, I analyze in this article the interpretative possibilities of the Cervantine self-portrait in the poetic and aesthetic planes, but also in those of the ethics and the autobiography. The burlesque form, the jocular tone of the description, coexists with shades that talk about the deep worries of an already elderly author, who counterposes the decrepit image of the old age, with the cheerful enthusiasm of the one who knows himself on the way to everlasting fame
