THE BRUMADINHO DAM COLLAPSE AND DISCURSIVITIES IN TWITTER

In this article, we aim to analyze the discursivization, in material published on Twitter, of the Brumadinho dam collapse, using the theoretical framework of Discourse Analysis (AD) of Pecheuxtian affiliation. For this, we mobilize the theoretical notions of subject, discursive memory, discursive metaphor and silencing, among others. The discursive corpus consisted of a tweet from the G1 portal, a tweet from Mídia NINJA, a tweet from O Antagonista, a tweet from a public figure mentioned in the Antagonist tweet, in addition to seven digital comments published in responses to these posts. We divided these publications into ten discursive sequences and, as they are digital materialities, we made the analysis considering the specificities of this medium, in which they circulate. The results show that, in the discursive sequences analyzed, a dispute of narratives is established, with meaning effects in tension, working on the same event from antagonistic subject positions and, furthermore, the gestures of interpretation of journalistic media affect the meanings of the discourses inscribed in the materialities, whether in the mainstream media or in the alternative media

Diversity and composition of fruit-feeding butterflies in tropical Eucalyptus plantations.

Production landscapes are rarely considered as priority areas for biodiversity conservation in the tropics. Tree plantations have the potential to provide a conservation service in much of the humid tropics since they are rapidly increasing in extent and present less of a structural contrast with native vegetation than many more intensive agricultural land-uses. We used hierarchical partitioning to examine the factors that influence the value of large-scale Eucalyptus plantations for tropical fruit-feeding butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) in the Brazilian Amazon. We focused on evaluating the importance of landscape versus stand-level factors in determining the diversity and composition of butterfly assemblages, and how butterfly-environment relationships vary within and between subfamilies of Nymphalidae. Native understorey vegetation richness had the strongest independent effect on the richness, abundance and composition of all fruit-feeding butterflies, as well as a subset of species that had been recorded in nearby primary forests. However, overall patterns were strongly influenced by the most abundant subfamily (Satyrinae), and vegetation richness was not related to the abundance of any other subfamily, or non-Satyrinae species, highlighting the importance of disaggregating the fruit-feeding Nymphalidae when examining butterfly-environment relationships. Our results suggest that plantations can help conserve a limited number of forest species, and serve to highlight the research that is necessary to understand better the relationship between fruit-feeding butterflies and environmental variables that are amenable to management

A social and ecological assessment of tropical land uses at multiple scales:the Sustainable Amazon Network

Science has a critical role to play in guiding more sustainable development trajectories. Here, we present the Sustainable Amazon Network (Rede Amazonia Sustentavel, RAS): a multidisciplinary research initiative involving more than 30 partner organizations working to assess both social and ecological dimensions of land-use sustainability in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The research approach adopted by RAS offers three advantages for addressing land-use sustainability problems: (i) the collection of synchronized and co-located ecological and socioeconomic data across broad gradients of past and present human use; (ii) a nested sampling design to aid comparison of ecological and socioeconomic conditions associated with different land uses across local, landscape and regional scales; and (iii) a strong engagement with a wide variety of actors and non-research institutions. Here, we elaborate on these key features, and identify the ways in which RAS can help in highlighting those problems in most urgent need of attention, and in guiding improvements in land-use sustainability in Amazonia and elsewhere in the tropics. We also discuss some of the practical lessons, limitations and realities faced during the development of the RAS initiative so far
