On Logical Depth and the Running Time of Shortest Programs
The logical depth with significance of a finite binary string is the
shortest running time of a binary program for that can be compressed by at
most bits. There is another definition of logical depth. We give two
theorems about the quantitative relation between these versions: the first
theorem concerns a variation of a known fact with a new proof, the second
theorem and its proof are new. We select the above version of logical depth and
show the following. There is an infinite sequence of strings of increasing
length such that for each there is a such that the logical depth of the
th string as a function of is incomputable (it rises faster than any
computable function) but with replaced by the resuling function is
computable. Hence the maximal gap between the logical depths resulting from
incrementing appropriate 's by 1 rises faster than any computable function.
All functions mentioned are upper bounded by the Busy Beaver function. Since
for every string its logical depth is nonincreasing in , the minimal
computation time of the shortest programs for the sequence of strings as a
function of rises faster than any computable function but not so fast as

advantages inherent to the optical fiber technology
The role of dissipation in biasing the vacuum selection in quantum field theory at finite temperature
We study the symmetry breaking pattern of an O(4) symmetric model of scalar
fields, with both charged and neutral fields, interacting with a photon bath.
Nagasawa and Brandenberger argued that in favourable circumstances the vacuum
manifold would be reduced from S^3 to S^1. Here it is shown that a selective
condensation of the neutral fields, that are not directly coupled to photons,
can be achieved in the presence of a minimal ``external'' dissipation, i.e. not
related to interactions with a bath. This should be relevant in the early

Fósseis encontrados nas escavações permitiram identificar os táxones indicados no Quadro 1, que datam do Cretácico (Cenomaniano superior) e outros do Miocénico inferior (Aquitaniano). Todos os fósseis foram encontrados em posição secundária, nunca in situ. A origem primária dos fósseis do Miocénico inferior pode situar-se nas proximidades imediatas ou em áreas bastante próximas. A ocorrência pode resultar de simples remeximento local de sedimentos.
Quanto aos rudistas do Cenomaniano superior, é provável que a sua presença indique transporte acidental, de mistura com restos humanos, a partir de afloramentos de enchimentos cársicos, entulhos ou solos com fósseis desagregados; o que corrobora outras indicações indicativas de transporte de despojos humanos oriundos de áreas algo afastadas. A sua origem situar-se-ia, o mais perto, na faixa de calcários que se estende de Alcântara às imediações de Santos-o-Velho, de onde proviria também material humano
Thermoelectric response of FeTeSe: evidence for strong correlation and low carrier density
We present a study of the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients of
FeTeSe extended up to 28 T. The large magnitude of the
Seebeck coefficient in the optimally doped sample tracks a remarkably low
normalized Fermi temperature, which, like other correlated superconductors, is
only one order of magnitude larger than T. We combine our data with other
experimentally measured coefficients of the system to extract a set of
self-consistent parameters, which identify FeTeSe as a
low-density correlated superconductor barely in the clean limit. The system is
subject to strong superconducting fluctuations with a sizeable vortex Nernst
signal in a wide temperature window.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figure
Fauna malacológica moderna no Claustro da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa
A malacofauna marinha autóctone colhida no Claustro do Convento de
Jesus (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa), inclui 21 espécies de bivalves e 15 de
gastrópodes. Muito variada, é compatível com as condições ecológicas no Mar
da Palha até a década de 60 do século xx. Desde então, a poluição levou ao
desaparecimento de muitas espécies. Predominam moluscos consumidos: mexilhão (Mytilus), ostras( Ostrea,
Crassostrea), sobretudo o berbigão (Cerastoderma), amêijoas (Spisula e Tapes) e
Burriés (Littorina. etc.), outrora abundantes nos fundos litorais das praias arenosas
circundantes de Lisboa. A escassez de lapa (Patella), conquilha (Donax) e lam-
bujinha (Scrobicularia) poderá significar maior distância aos locais de recolh
Langhian rays (Chondrichthyes, Batomorphii) from Brielas, Lower Tagus Basin, Portugal
The Langhian Vc unit of Brielas section (Caparica road, Almada), in the marine Miocene of the Lower Tagus Basin (West Portugal), is rich in batoid species. In this study, batoids are represented by 149 isolated fossil teeth and a single fossil dental plate collected from a bulk sample of washed and sorted sediment. A total of 12 species belonging to the orders Rhinopristiformes, Rajiformes, Torpediniformes and Myliobatiformes were identified. All genera and some species are known to have extant representatives. Aetobatus cappettai Antunes and Balbino, 2006, is described now from Langhian material which suggests it is older than previously supposed. The biogeographic ranges, environmental constraints and behaviour of the species described in this study point out to an infralittoral environment characterized by the dominance of warm water conditions, where episodic upwelling contributed to the occurrence of different types of batoids coexisting in the same habitat
The role of point-like topological excitations at criticality: from vortices to global monopoles
We determine the detailed thermodynamic behavior of vortices in the O(2)
scalar model in 2D and of global monopoles in the O(3) model in 3D. We
construct new numerical techniques, based on cluster decomposition algorithms,
to analyze the point defect configurations. We find that these criteria produce
results for the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in agreement with a topological
transition between a polarizable insulator and a conductor, at which free
topological charges appear in the system. For global monopoles we find no pair
unbinding transition. Instead a transition to a dense state where pairs are no
longer distinguishable occurs at T<Tc, without leading to long range disorder.
We produce both extensive numerical evidence of this behavior as well as a
semi-analytic treatment of the partition function for defects. General
expectations for N=D>3 are drawn, based on the observed behavior.Comment: 14 pages, REVTEX, 13 eps figure
Methods of isolation and identification of pathogenic and potential pathogenic bacteria from skins and tannery effluents
Currently there is no standard protocol available within the leather industry to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria from hides, skins or tannery effluent. This study was therefore carried out to identify simple but effective methods for isolation and identification of bacterial pathogens from the effluent and skins during leather processing. Identification methods based on both phenotypic and genotypic characteristics were investigated. Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used as indicator bacteria to evaluate the isolation and identification methods. Decontaminated calfskins were inoculated with a pure culture of the above mentioned bacterial species followed by a pre-tanning and chromium tanning processes. Effluent samples were collected and skins were swabbed at the end of each processing stage. Bacterial identification was carried out based on the phenotypic characteristics; such as colony appearance on selective solid media, cell morphology following a standard Gram-staining and spore staining techniques, and biochemical reactions, e.g., the ability of a bacterial species to ferment particular sugars and ability to produce certain enzymes. Additionally, an identification system based on bacterial phenotypic characteristics, known as Biolog® system was applied. A pulsed-filed gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method for bacterial DNA fingerprinting was also evaluated and used for the identification of the inoculated bacteria.
