Mitogen-induced oscillations of membrane potential and Ca2+ in human fibroblasts

AbstractUsing the whole-cell technique, we have measured recurring hyperpolarizations induced by fetal calf serum and bradykinin in human fibroblasts. By coupling fura-2 microfluorimetry to electrophysiology, we have also measured directly cytosolic Ca2+ and found that Ca2+ oscillations occur in synchrony with membrane currents. Mitogen stimulation of cells in which intracellular K+ had been replaced with Cs+ resulted in the abolishment of the outward current. We conclude then that the mitogen-induced recurring hyperpolarizations in human fibroblasts are due to the opening of Ca2+-activated K+ channels

Quasideterministic generation of maximally entangled states of two mesoscopic atomic ensembles by adiabatic quantum feedback

We introduce an efficient, quasideterministic scheme to generate maximally entangled states of two atomic ensembles. The scheme is based on quantum nondemolition measurements of total atomic populations and on adiabatic quantum feedback conditioned by the measurements outputs. Multi-Attribute forecast of the price in the Iberian Electricity Market

Electricity has been acquiring a more significant presence in our lives, and it is estimated that the future AQ1 will be increasingly electric. Nowadays, we have access to enormous amounts of data that do not have much-added value if they cannot support decision-making or plan systems in advance and correctly. Forecasts are vital tools to support decision-making. We believe it is possible to resort to open data available on the Internet to make electricity price forecasts that - decision-makers can use in the sector. In this work, we study the multi-attribute hourly forecast of the electricity price in MIBEL (Iberian electricity market) for the 24 h of the following day, using open data. The realization of the multi-attribute predictions fell on the TIM (‘Tangent Information Modeler’) tool with AutoML (‘Auto Machine Learning’) capabilities. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo, en una posici?n discursiva, a partir del An?lisis de Discurso comprender gestos de interpretaci?n posibilitando nuevas experiencias y perspectivas con relaci?n al lenguaje audiovisual con el uso del cortometraje ?Os Fant?sticos Livros Voadores de Modesto M?ximo? del Willian Joyce, valorizando los aspectos culturales e ideol?gicos. En este contexto, utilizaremos la teor?a del An?lisis de Discurso de l?nea francesa para entender c?mo funciona ese proceso de construcci?n del texto en el cortometraje. Para esa representaci?n, se traz? un sesgo te?rico-conceptual de los estudios discursivos de P?cheux (1990), Orlandi (1996), Coraccini (1995) e Indursky (2001). De esta forma, orientado por el sesgo te?rico del An?lisis de Discurso, el corpus est? constituido por recortes de im?genes por medio de las cuales se pretende analizar una de sus m?ltiples significaciones en la construcci?n y producci?n de efectos de sentidos. Functional properties of a newly cloned fish ortholog of the neutral amino acid transporter B0AT1 (SLC6A19)

The functional properties of an ortholog of the B0AT1 (SLC6A19) amino acid transporter, cloned from the intestine of the sea bass Dicentrachus labrax, were investigated. The two-electrode voltage-clamp technique was applied to Xenopus laevis oocytes heterologously expressing the transporter in order to measure the currents associated with the transport process in different conditions. In particular the substrate specificity, the ionic requirements, and possible effects of pH were examined. Among the organic substrates, leucine, glycine, serine and valine generated the largest transport currents with apparent affinities in the lower millimolar range. The importance of Na+ as the driver ion in the transport process is confirmed, although Li+ is also capable to sustain transport, while K+ is not. No evidence of a relevant role of Cl- in the transport activity was found. Concerning the other two kinds of currents commonly found in electrogenic transporters, very fast presteady-state currents were detected in the absence of organic substrate, while lithium-specific leak currents were not observed. The comparison of these properties with those of the mammalian and insect orthologs may give interesting indication for future structure-function studies in this transporter subfamily

Dental and gingival pain and associated factors among Brazilian adolescents: an analysis of the Brazilian Oral Health Survey 2002-2003

Estimou-se a prevalência de dor nos dentes e gengivas e fatores associados em adolescentes brasileiros de 15 a 19 anos de idade. Foram utilizadas informações de 16.126 adolescentes participantes do levantamento epidemiológico nacional de saúde bucal - SB Brasil 2002-2003. O desfecho foi o relato de dor nos dentes e gengivas nos últimos seis meses. As variáveis exploratórias foram: renda per capita, escolaridade, condição de estudo, sexo, cor da pele, idade, localização geográfica da residência, tipo de serviço odontológico utilizado pela última vez, tempo decorrido da última consulta odontológica, índice CPO-D e seus componentes, cálculo dentário e o índice de estética dental. Foram realizadas análises brutas e múltiplas utilizando a regressão de Poisson. A prevalência da dor de dentes e gengivas foi de 35,6% (IC95%: 34,8-36,4). A prevalência de dor foi maior nas meninas, naqueles pertencentes a famílias com baixa renda per capita, nos não estudantes e estudantes de escola pública e naqueles com baixa escolaridade para a idade. Indivíduos que apresentaram altos níveis de cárie e cálculo dentário também apresentaram maiores prevalências do desfecho. A dor nos dentes e gengivas em adolescentes pode ser considerada um problema relevante em saúde pública sugerindo a necessidade de ações preventivas e de promoção da saúde.The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of dental and gingival pain and associated factors among Brazilian adolescents (15-19 years of age). Data from 16,126 adolescents who participated in the Brazilian Oral Health Survey SB-Brazil 2002-2003 were used. The outcome measured was dental and gingival pain in the last six months. Independent variables were per capita income, schooling, school enrollment, gender, skin color, age, area of residence, time since last dental appointment, type of dental service, DMFT index and its components, dental calculus, and Dental Aesthetic Index. Simple and multiple Poisson regression analyses were performed. Prevalence of dental and gingival pain was 35.6% (95%CI: 34.8-36.4). Increased prevalence of pain was associated with: female gender, low income, non-students, students enrolled in public schools, and grade-for-age lag. In addition, adolescents with high levels of dental caries and dental calculus also reported higher prevalence of dental pain. Dental and gingival pain can be considered a relevant public health problem, suggesting the need for preventive measures

A SOCIAL-DEMOCRACIA E SEUS REFLEXOS SOBRE O DIREITO CIVIL CONTEMPORÂNEO

O presente artigo destina-se a identificar a influência do pensamento da social-democracia europeia, do final do século dezenove até o período pós Segunda Guerra Mundial, sobre instrumentos típicos do Direito Civil, como a propriedade e as pessoas jurídicas. O primeiro ponto enfrentado é a filiação da social-democracia às várias vertentes do socialismo e seu posterior distanciamento. Examina as várias fases da construção do pensamento da social-democracia e sua intersecção com as propostas do pensamento reformista cristão, do solidarismo e sua influência sobre o constitucionalismo europeu pós Segunda Guerra Mundial. Por fim, merecem destaque as questões de metodologia, na produção normativa e interpretação jurídica, decorrentes das várias tendências do pensamento social-democrata não só no campo do Direito Público, mas nas formulações no Direito Privado contemporâne
