Empowerment for Continuous Agent-Environment Systems
This paper develops generalizations of empowerment to continuous states.
Empowerment is a recently introduced information-theoretic quantity motivated
by hypotheses about the efficiency of the sensorimotor loop in biological
organisms, but also from considerations stemming from curiosity-driven
learning. Empowemerment measures, for agent-environment systems with stochastic
transitions, how much influence an agent has on its environment, but only that
influence that can be sensed by the agent sensors. It is an
information-theoretic generalization of joint controllability (influence on
environment) and observability (measurement by sensors) of the environment by
the agent, both controllability and observability being usually defined in
control theory as the dimensionality of the control/observation spaces. Earlier
work has shown that empowerment has various interesting and relevant
properties, e.g., it allows us to identify salient states using only the
dynamics, and it can act as intrinsic reward without requiring an external
reward. However, in this previous work empowerment was limited to the case of
small-scale and discrete domains and furthermore state transition probabilities
were assumed to be known. The goal of this paper is to extend empowerment to
the significantly more important and relevant case of continuous vector-valued
state spaces and initially unknown state transition probabilities. The
continuous state space is addressed by Monte-Carlo approximation; the unknown
transitions are addressed by model learning and prediction for which we apply
Gaussian processes regression with iterated forecasting. In a number of
well-known continuous control tasks we examine the dynamics induced by
empowerment and include an application to exploration and online model
learning
Hybrid Monte Carlo with Fat Link Fermion Actions
The use of APE smearing or other blocking techniques in lattice fermion
actions can provide many advantages. There are many variants of these fat link
actions in lattice QCD currently, such as FLIC fermions. The FLIC fermion
formalism makes use of the APE blocking technique in combination with a
projection of the blocked links back into the special unitary group. This
reunitarisation is often performed using an iterative maximisation of a gauge
invariant measure. This technique is not differentiable with respect to the
gauge field and thus prevents the use of standard Hybrid Monte Carlo simulation
algorithms. The use of an alternative projection technique circumvents this
difficulty and allows the simulation of dynamical fat link fermions with
standard HMC and its variants. The necessary equations of motion for FLIC
fermions are derived, and some initial simulation results are presented. The
technique is more general however, and is straightforwardly applicable to other
smearing techniques or fat link actions
A-dependence of nuclear transparency in quasielastic A(e,e'p) at high Q^2
The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e,e'p) reaction has been studied at
SLAC with H-2, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q^2 = 1, 3, 5, and
6.8 (GeV/c)^2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A,Q^2), a measure of the
average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without
interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with
momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. No significant

Momentum transfer dependence of nuclear transparency from the quasielastic 12C(e,e’p) reaction
The cross section for quasielastic 12C(e,e’p) scattering has been measured at momentum transfer Q2=1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The results are consistent with scattering from a single nucleon as the dominant process. The nuclear transparency is obtained and compared with theoretical calculations that incorporate color transparency effects. No significant rise of the transparency with Q2 is observed
Searching for doubly charged Higgs bosons in M\"{o}ller scattering by resonance effects at linear collider
We discuss the parity-violating left-right asymmetries (LRAs) in M\"{o}ller
scattering at the International Linear Collider (ILC) induced by doubly charged
Higgs bosons in models with triplet and singlet scalar bosons, which
couple to the left- and right-handed charged leptons, respectively. These
bosons are important in the scenarios for the generation of the neutrino mass.
We demonstrate that the contributions to the LRAs from the triplet and singlet
bosons are opposite to each other. In particular, we show that the doubly
charged Higgs boson from the singlet scalar can be tested at the ILC by using

Inclusive electron scattering from nuclei at x≃1
The inclusive A(e,e′) cross section for x≃1 was measured on 2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering
Two-Body Photodisintegration of the Deuteron up to 2.8 GeV
Measurements were performed for the photodisintegration cross section of the deuteron for photon energies from 1.6 to 2.8 GeV and center-of-mass angles from 37° to 90°. The measured energy dependence of the cross section at θc.m.=90° is in agreement with the constituent counting rules
Evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton
In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation
Age at first birth in women is genetically associated with increased risk of schizophrenia
Prof. Paunio on PGC:n jäsenPrevious studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.Peer reviewe
