Large Language Models vs. Stack Overflow in Addressing Android Permission Related Challenges

    No full text

The Android permission system regulates access to sensitive
mobile device resources and data, such as contacts, cameras, and
locations. Third-party developers must request permission to
access these resources, and users must grant permission before the
application (app) can access them. However, the Android permission
system is complex, and developers often face challenges related to
permissions, such as compatibility issues, misuse of permissions,
and vulnerabilities related to permissions. The goal of this study
is to understand the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) as a
supporting tool to help developers secure and appropriately use
Android permissions to mitigate the misuse and security risks in
apps. In this study, we qualitatively analyzed 1,008 Stack Overflow
questions (with accepted answers) related to Android permissions.
We compared Generative Pre-training Transformer (GPT) solutions
with Stack Overflow's accepted answers and evaluated whether
GPT provides consistent answers for Android permission-related
questions. Our result showed that above 50% of GPT-provided
answers align with Stack Overflow's accepted answers. GPT offers
better-aligned responses for challenges related to Documentation
and Conceptual Understanding, while it provides less aligned
answers for Debugging-related issues. In addition, we found that
GPT provides more consistent answers for Documentation and
Conceptual Understanding, while Implementation-related answers
are the least consistent. Therefore, our study demonstrated the
potential of using LLMs like GPT as a supporting tool to help
developers mitigate Android permission-related problems</p&gt
