Social mindfulness and prosociality vary across the globe

Humans are social animals, but not everyone will be mindful of others to the same extent. Individual differences have been found, but would social mindfulness also be shaped by one’s location in the world? Expecting cross-national differences to exist, we examined if and how social mindfulness differs across countries. At little to no material cost, social mindfulness typically entails small acts of attention or kindness. Even though fairly common, such low-cost cooperation has received little empirical attention. Measuring social mindfulness across 31 samples from industrialized countries and regions (n = 8,354), we found considerable variation. Among selected country-level variables, greater social mindfulness was most strongly associated with countries’ better general performance on environmental protection. Together, our findings contribute to the literature on prosociality by targeting the kind of everyday cooperation that is more focused on communicating benevolence than on providing material benefits

Powered endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy with mucosal flaps

Crown copyright © 2009 Published by Elsevier Inc.The technique described for endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) allows complete exposure of the lacrimal sac after creation of a large bony ostium. In addition, preservation of the lacrimal mucosa allows apposition of the nasal mucosa to the lacrimal mucosa, allowing healing by first intention and thereby avoiding granulation tissue formation with subsequent scarring. These principles have been espoused as the corner stones for success for the traditional external DCR, but can now be achieved without an external incision or disruption of the lacrimal pump seen with the external approach. This technique has a 95% anatomical patency, which is as good as the best results obtained by the external DCR. Crown Copyright © 2009.Peter John Wormald and Angelo Tsirba

    Thiazolidinedione induced thyroid associated orbitopathy

Abstract Background To describe an episode of thyroid associated orbitopathy (TAO) following the initiation of thiazolidinedione (TZD). Case presentation We report a female patient with a history of Graves' disease and stabilised thyroid associated orbitopathy for 2.5 years, who experienced rapid progression of TAO after the initiation of thiazolidinedione for glycemic control. Following the discontinuation of TZD, the patient experienced subsequent stabilisation of disease and normalization of vision. The medical history, ophthalmic findings, and clinical course are discussed. Conclusion Thiazolidinediones may exacerbate TAO, and this should be taken into consideration when selecting treatment for diabetic patients with a history of autoimmune thyroid disorders.</p
