    Coming to terms with the National Socialist Past in teamWorx's TV Event Movies: 'Dresden' (2006), 'Nicht alle waren Mörder' (2006) and 'Die Flucht' (2007)

    This thesis examines three made-for-television ‘Event Movies’ from the German production company teamWorx, made between 2006 and 2007 – Dresden (2006), Nicht alle waren Mörder (2006) and Die Flucht (2007) – within the context of contemporary debates of ‘Vergangenheitsbewältigung’ or ‘coming to terms with the past’ in Germany. It will deal with specific debates in memory of the National Socialist past, namely representations of Germans as victims of the Second World War and memory of the Holocaust. Although in recent years the importance of teamWorx’s television films has begun to be acknowledged by scholars in both Germany and the UK, this thesis represents the first attempt to analyse these three Event Movies as a unit and to explore in-depth the teamWorx company and its attitudes to historical film. As such, two interviews will be relied on throughout this thesis, with chairman of the board Nico Hofmann and Die Flucht’s director Kai Wessel. In order to place the films within the context of contemporary debates on memory of the Nazi past in Germany, the thesis will undertake a filmic analysis of the Event Movies, supported by both the intentions of the filmmakers and critical responses in the contemporary press. Of primary importance for the thesis will be the twin concerns of the authenticity of teamWorx’s productions, as claimed by the filmmakers and the Event Movies’ borrowing of filmmaking devices from Hollywood genres, in particular the melodrama. Following this analysis it will be asked to what extent the Event Movies affect and reflect contemporary debates on the legacy of National Socialism and how these films contribute to the normalisation of the Nazi past in Germany

    Numerical techniques in digital microscopic holographic particle image velocimetry

    Digital microscopic holographic particle image velocimetry (DµHPIV) is a technique which records scattered coherent light and uses it to measure displacement of particles in a fluid flow. The work in this thesis begins with the construction of a digital holographic microscope and explores the different possible methods of recording and holographic reconstruction, finding an off-axis forward-scatter geometry to be most suitable for the task. A comparison follows of methods to measure displacement in a sparsely seeded environment by performing a simple experiment. It finds that complex amplitude correlation performs significantly better than both intensity correlation and nearest neighbour analysis; the two other possible methods of displacement tracking. Later, an experiment is performed to investigate the behaviour of a microfluidic blood separator. The separator is intended to remove blood plasma from whole blood without other contaminants such as red blood cells and without the need for expensive laboratory equipment. In this chapter a new technique, higher order correlation, is introduced which can be used to strengthen the peaks in correlations of three or more particle images in a flow, and a potential flow CFD model of the separator is built from scratch to predict whether the separator will work, and against which the results can be compared. Finally, there is an experiment carried out which for the first time allows aberration free imaging within objects with irregular, highly curved surfaces; in this case optical fibres and inkjet droplets, by numerically reconstructing the droplet surface.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    The effectiveness of schemes that refine referrals between primary and secondary care - the UK experience with glaucoma referrals: the Health Innovation & Education Cluster (HIEC) Glaucoma Pathways Project

    Objectives: A comparison of glaucoma referral refinement schemes (GRRS) in the UK during a time period of considerable change in national policy and guidance. Design: Retrospective multisite review. Setting: The outcomes of clinical examinations by optometrists with a specialist interest in glaucoma (OSIs) were compared with optometrists with no specialist interest in glaucoma (non-OSIs). Data from Huntingdon and Nottingham assessed non-OSI findings, while Manchester and Gloucestershire reviewed OSI findings. Participants: 1086 patients. 434 patients were from Huntingdon, 179 from Manchester, 204 from Gloucestershire and 269 from Nottingham. Results: The first-visit discharge rate (FVDR) for all time periods for OSIs was 14.1% compared with 36.1% from non-OSIs (difference 22%, CI 16.9% to 26.7%; p<0.001). The FVDR increased after the April 2009 National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) glaucoma guidelines compared with pre-NICE, which was particularly evident when pre-NICE was compared with the current practice time period (OSIs 6.2–17.2%, difference 11%, CI −24.7% to 4.3%; p=0.18, non-OSIs 29.2–43.9%, difference 14.7%, CI −27.8% to −0.30%; p=0.03). Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was the commonest reason for referral for OSIs and non-OSIs, 28.7% and 36.1%, respectively, of total referrals. The proportion of referrals for elevated IOP increased from 10.9% pre-NICE to 28.0% post-NICE for OSIs, and from 19% to 45.1% for non-OSIs. Conclusions: In terms of ‘demand management’, OSIs can reduce FVDR of patients reviewed in secondary care; however, in terms of ‘patient safety’ this study also shows that overemphasis on IOP as a criterion for referral is having an adverse effect on both the non-OSIs and indeed the OSIs ability to detect glaucomatous optic nerve features. It is recommended that referral letters from non-OSIs be stratified for risk, directing high-risk patients straight to secondary care, and low-risk patients to OSIs

    Assessment at UK medical schools varies substantially in volume, type and intensity and correlates with postgraduate attainment

    BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), medical schools are free to develop local systems and policies that govern student assessment and progression. Successful completion of an undergraduate medical degree results in the automatic award of a provisional licence to practice medicine by the General Medical Council (GMC). Such a licensing process relies heavily on the assumption that individual schools develop similarly rigorous assessment policies. Little work has evaluated variability of undergraduate medical assessment between medical schools. That absence is important in the light of the GMC's recent announcement of the introduction of the UKMLA (UK Medical Licensing Assessment) for all doctors who wish to practise in the UK. The present study aimed to quantify and compare the volume, type and intensity of summative assessment across medicine (A100) courses in the United Kingdom, and to assess whether intensity of assessment correlates with the postgraduate attainment of doctors from these schools. METHODS: Locally knowledgeable students in each school were approached to take part in guided-questionnaire interviews via telephone or Skype(TM). Their understanding of assessment at their medical school was probed, and later validated with the assessment department of the respective medical school. We gathered data for 25 of 27 A100 programmes in the UK and compared volume, type and intensity of assessment between schools. We then correlated these data with the mean first-attempt score of graduates sitting MRCGP and MRCP(UK), as well as with UKFPO selection measures. RESULTS: The median written assessment volume across all schools was 2000 min (mean = 2027, SD = 586, LQ = 1500, UQ = 2500, range = 1000-3200) and 1400 marks (mean = 1555, SD = 463, LQ = 1200, UQ = 1800, range = 1100-2800). The median practical assessment volume was 400 min (mean = 472, SD = 207, LQ = 400, UQ = 600, range = 200-1000). The median intensity (minutes per mark ratio) of summative written assessment was 1.24 min per mark (mean = 1.28, SD = 0.30, LQ = 1.11, UQ = 1.37, range = 0.85-2.08). An exploratory analysis suggested a significant correlation of total assessment time with mean first-attempt score on both the knowledge and the clinical assessments of MRCGP and of MRCP(UK). CONCLUSIONS: There are substantial differences in the volume, format and intensity of undergraduate assessment between UK medical schools. These findings suggest a potential for differences in the reliability of detecting poorly performing students, or differences in identifying and stratifying academically equivalent students for ranking in the Foundation Programme Application System (FPAS). Furthermore, these differences appear to directly correlate with performance in postgraduate examinations. Taken together, our findings highlight highly variable local assessment procedures that warrant further investigation to establish their potential impact on students

    Morphometry of subaerial shield volcanoes and glaciovolcanoes from Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland: Effects of eruption environment

    We present a morphometric study of 33 basaltic volcanic edifices from the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland, using a 20 m resolution digital elevation model (DEM). Slope values distinguish subaerial from intraglacial eruption environments, with glaciovolcanic edifices having average slope values that are > 5° higher than subaerial shields. The 26 analyzed glaciovolcanic edifices are separated into 3 groups based on size, and are also categorized following the new classification scheme of tuyas by Russell et al. (2014), into 15 tindars, 1 conical tuya, 3 flat-topped tuyas and 7 complex tuyas. The glaciovolcanic edifices show a continuum of landforms ranging from small elongated tindars to large equidimensional flat-topped tuyas. The smaller edifices ( 0.1 km3) are flat-topped tuyas. The mid-sized edifices (0.01–0.1 km3) show a wide variety of shapes and classify either as tindars or as complex tuyas, with only one edifice classifying as a conical tuya. Edifice elongation tends to decrease with volume, suggesting that small edifices are primarily fissure controlled, whereas larger edifices are mainly controlled by a central vent. The mid-sized complex tuyas are transitional edifices, suggesting that some intraglacial eruptions start as fissure eruptions that subsequently concentrate into one or more central vents, whereas the mid-sized tindars suggest a sustained fissure eruption. There is a tectonic control on the orientation of the edifices evidenced by a strong correlation between edifice elongation azimuth and mapped faults and fractures. Most edifice elongations cluster between 020° and 080°, coinciding with the strike of normal faults within and at the boundary of regional volcanic systems, but some edifices have elongations that correlate with N–S striking book-shelf faults. This implies that intraglacial eruptions are controlled by pre-existing pathways in the crust, as has been previously observed for subaerial fissure eruptions. In terms of classification, quantification of the limits between the four tuya types proposed by Russell et al. (2014) is difficult because of the transitional nature shown by several edifices. A threshold of 1.8 in ellipticity index (E.I.) values can be used to distinguish tindars from the other three types. Flat-topped tuyas are distinguished by their greater overall size, their large and relatively flat summit regions, reflected in bimodal slope distributions, and their low E.I. and low to intermediate irregularity index (I.I.) values. The only analyzed conical tuya has very low E.I. and I.I. values, very small summit regions and very steep flank slopes. The complex tuyas have variable morphometries, but are in general characterized by high I.I. values and very irregular slope distributions.     Recent Region-wide Declines in Caribbean Reef Fish Abundance

    Profound ecological changes are occurring on coral reefs throughout the tropics, with marked coral cover losses and concomitant algal increases, particularly in the Caribbean region. Historical declines in the abundance of large Caribbean reef fishes likely reflect centuries of overexploitation. However, effects of drastic recent degradation of reef habitats on reef fish assemblages have yet to be established. By using meta-analysis, we analyzed time series of reef fish density obtained from 48 studies that include 318 reefs across the Caribbean and span the time period 1955–2007. Our analyses show that overall reef fish density has been declining significantly for more than a decade, at rates that are consistent across all subregions of the Caribbean basin (2.7% to 6.0% loss per year) and in three of six trophic groups. Changes in fish density over the past half-century are modest relative to concurrent changes in benthic cover on Caribbean reefs. However, the recent significant decline in overall fish abundance and its consistency across several trophic groups and among both fished and nonfished species indicate that Caribbean fishes have begun to respond negatively to habitat degradation

    Latanoprost for open-angle glaucoma (UKGTS): a randomised, multicentre, placebo-controlled trial

    Background: Treatments for open-angle glaucoma aim to prevent vision loss through lowering of intraocular pressure, but to our knowledge no placebo-controlled trials have assessed visual function preservation, and the observation periods of previous (unmasked) trials have typically been at least 5 years. We assessed vision preservation in patients given latanoprost compared with those given placebo. Methods: In this randomised, triple-masked, placebo-controlled trial, we enrolled patients with newly diagnosed open-angle glaucoma at ten UK centres (tertiary referral centres, teaching hospitals, and district general hospitals). Eligible patients were randomly allocated (1:1) with a website-generated randomisation schedule, stratified by centre and with a permuted block design, to receive either latanoprost 0·005% (intervention group) or placebo (control group) eye drops. Drops were administered from identical bottles, once a day, to both eyes. The primary outcome was time to visual field deterioration within 24 months. Analyses were done in all individuals with follow-up data. The Data and Safety Monitoring Committee (DSMC) recommended stopping the trial on Jan 6, 2011 (last patient visit July, 2011), after an interim analysis, and suggested a change in primary outcome from the difference in proportions of patients with incident progression between groups to time to visual field deterioration within 24 months. This trial is registered, number ISRCTN96423140. Findings: We enrolled 516 individuals between Dec 1, 2006, and March 16, 2010. Baseline mean intraocular pressure was 19·6 mm Hg (SD 4·6) in 258 patients in the latanoprost group and 20·1 mm Hg (4·8) in 258 controls. At 24 months, mean reduction in intraocular pressure was 3·8 mm Hg (4·0) in 231 patients assessed in the latanoprost group and 0·9 mm Hg (3·8) in 230 patients assessed in the placebo group. Visual field preservation was significantly longer in the latanoprost group than in the placebo group: adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 0·44 (95% CI 0·28–0·69; p=0·0003). We noted 18 serious adverse events, none attributable to the study drug. Interpretation: This is the first randomised placebo-controlled trial to show preservation of the visual field with an intraocular-pressure-lowering drug in patients with open-angle glaucoma.
