Large steps in cloth simulation
The bottle-neck in most cloth simulation systems is that time steps must be small to avoid numerical instability. This paper describes a cloth simulation system that can stably take large time steps. The simulation system couples a new technique for enforcing constraints on individual cloth particles with an implicit integration method. The simulator models cloth as a triangular mesh, with internal cloth forces derived using a simple continuum formulation that supports modeling operations such as local anisotropic stretch or compression; a unified treatment of damping forces is included as well. The implicit integration method generates a large, unbanded sparse linear system at each time step which is solved using a modified conjugate gradient method that simultaneously enforces particles â constraints. The constraints are always maintained exactly, independent of the number of conjugate gradient iterations, which is typically small. The resulting simulation system is significantly faster than previous accounts of cloth simulation systems in the literature. Unwind: Interactive Fish Straightening
The ScanAllFish project is a large-scale effort to scan all the world's
33,100 known species of fishes. It has already generated thousands of
volumetric CT scans of fish species which are available on open access
platforms such as the Open Science Framework. To achieve a scanning rate
required for a project of this magnitude, many specimens are grouped together
into a single tube and scanned all at once. The resulting data contain many
fish which are often bent and twisted to fit into the scanner. Our system,
Unwind, is a novel interactive visualization and processing tool which
extracts, unbends, and untwists volumetric images of fish with minimal user
interaction. Our approach enables scientists to interactively unwarp these
volumes to remove the undesired torque and bending using a piecewise-linear
skeleton extracted by averaging isosurfaces of a harmonic function connecting
the head and tail of each fish. The result is a volumetric dataset of a
individual, straight fish in a canonical pose defined by the marine biologist
expert user. We have developed Unwind in collaboration with a team of marine
biologists: Our system has been deployed in their labs, and is presently being
used for dataset construction, biomechanical analysis, and the generation of
figures for scientific publication
Touché: Data-Driven Interactive Sword Fighting in Virtual Reality
VR games offer new freedom for players to interact naturally using motion. This makes it harder to design games that react to player motions convincingly. We present a framework for VR sword fighting experiences against a virtual character that simplifies the necessary technical work to achieve a convincing simulation. The framework facilitates VR design by abstracting from difficult details on the lower âphysicalâ level of interaction, using data-driven models to automate both the identification of user actions and the synthesis of character animations. Designers are able to specify the character's behaviour on a higher âsemanticâ level using parameterised building blocks, which allow for control over the experience while minimising manual development work. We conducted a technical evaluation, a questionnaire study and an interactive user study. Our results suggest that the framework produces more realistic and engaging interactions than simple hand-crafted interaction logic, while supporting a controllable and understandable behaviour design
Identifying metabolite markers for preterm birth in cervicovaginal fluid by magnetic resonance spectroscopy
Introduction Preterm birth (PTB) may be preceded by
changes in the vaginal microflora and metabolite profiles.
Objectives We sought to characterise the metabolite
profile of cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) of pregnant women
by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and assess their predictive value
for PTB.
Methods A pair of high-vaginal swabs was obtained from
pregnant women with no evidence of clinical infection and
grouped as follows: asymptomatic low risk (ALR) women
with no previous history of PTB, assessed at 20â22 gestational
weeks, g.w., n = 83; asymptomatic high risk
(AHR) women with a previous history of PTB, assessed at
both 20â22 g.w., n = 71, and 26â28 g.w., n = 58; and
women presenting with symptoms of preterm labor (PTL)
(SYM), assessed at 24â36 g.w., n = 65. Vaginal secretions
were dissolved in phosphate buffered saline and scanned
with a 9.4 T NMR spectrometer.
Results Six metabolites (lactate, alanine, acetate, glutamine/glutamate,
succinate and glucose) were analysed. In
all study cohorts vaginal pH correlated with lactate integral
(r = -0.62, p\0.0001). Lactate integrals were higher in
the term ALR compared to the AHR (20â22 g.w.) women
(p = 0.003). Acetate integrals were higher in the preterm
versus term women for the AHR (20â22 g.w.) (p = 0.048)
and SYM (p = 0.003) groups; and was predictive of
PTB\37 g.w. (AUC 0.78; 95 % CI 0.61â0.95), and
delivery within 2 weeks of the index assessment (AUC
0.84; 95 % CI 0.64â1) in the SYM women, whilst other
metabolites were not.
Conclusion High CVF acetate integral of women with
symptoms of PTL appears predictive of preterm delivery,
as well as delivery within 2 weeks of presentation
Impact of Chlamydia trachomatis in the reproductive setting: British Fertility Society Guidelines for practice
Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the genital tract is the most common sexually transmitted infection and has a world-wide distribution. The consequences of infection have an adverse effect on the reproductive health of women and are a common cause of infertility. Recent evidence also suggests an adverse effect on male reproduction. There is a need to standardise the approach in managing the impact of C. trachomatis infection on reproductive health. We have surveyed current UK practice towards screening and management of Chlamydia infections in the fertility setting. We found that at least 90% of clinicians surveyed offered screening. The literature on this topic was examined and revealed a paucity of solid evidence for estimating the risks of long-term reproductive sequelae following lower genital tract infection with C. trachomatis. The mechanism for the damage that occurs after Chlamydial infections is uncertain. However, instrumentation of the uterus in women with C. trachomatis infection is associated with a high risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, which can be prevented by appropriate antibiotic treatment and may prevent infected women from being at increased risk of the adverse sequelae, such as ectopic pregnancy and tubal factor infertility. Recommendations for practice have been proposed and the need for further studies is identified
