    Estudio de corrientes de espín en heteroestructuras híbridas ferromagnético/superconductor

    En este trabajo se aborda el estudio de corrientes puras de espín de magnones a través de una heteroestrcutra formada por un material ferromagnético y un superconductor. El material magnético actuará como inyector de corriente de espín a través de la intercara del superconductor. Estas corrientes de espín se excitaran en el material magnético por efecto Seebeck de espín (SSE)Se optimizará el crecimiento por PLD de ambos materiales y, una vez hecho esto, se optimizará también la fabricación de estas bicapas. Cuando se consigan unas estructuras que mantengan las propiedades magnéticas del YIG (ferrimagnético) y superconductoras del YBCO, se procederá a detectar estas corrientes de espín depositando en la superficie un material de alto espín órbita como es el platino. Al bajar la temperatura hasta que el YBCO entre en estado superconductor, se espera observar un cambio en en comportamiento de la propagación de estas corrientes generadas con efecto SSE. <br /

    Experiences Developing Safe and Fault-Tolerant Tele-Operated Service Robots. A Case Study in Shipyards

    Human operators use tele-operated service robots for performing more or less hazardous operations (manipulation of heavy and/or dangerous products) in more or less hostile environments (nuclear reactors, space missions, warehouses, etc). Anyway, independently of the operation, the robot has to interact with both the environment it is working on and with human operators. Therefore, it is essential that the design (which include both software and hardware) of the robot involves no risk, or at least an acceptable level of risk, neither for the operators, nor for the environment nor for the robot itself. Nevertheless, it is not always possible to make a system free of failures in its design or operation. Apart from the risk inherent to the use of the mechanisms themselves, these systems work in hazardous environments, where the probability of the risk is higher than normal. Should a failure happen, its consequences could even involve the loss of human lives. (Neumann, 1994) documents many cases of computer-related failures, such as the Therac-25 (a radiation-therapy device), the missiles shield in Saudi Arabia, etc. Nevertheless, safety aspects are seldom included in the early phases of the system design process from the beginning, even though they are a critic aspect. Generally, safety has to conform and adapt to the already designed system and not vice versa, when it is widely known that safety involves not only the design of the software but also the hardware.     European-wide ICT entrepreneurship education in action

    EUXCEL, a Trans-European technology entrepreneurship education initiative funded by the European Union, has demonstrated that creating cross-border collaboration between Europe's young ICT entrepreneurs is an achievable policy objective. The literature in this paper explores the importance of Entrepreneurship Education, the concept of European Nationalism and Born Global firms. This paper then outlines the context of EUXCEL, an international entrepreneurship programme, describing the key outcomes and education process, highlighting lessons learned and suggests key policy features that can make borderless entrepreneurship the norm rather than the exception. The research question is 'How can trans-regional entrepreneurship, with multi-nationality founders, be enabled and supported?' The findings of the paper identifies internationalisation and Pan-European collaboration as key outcomes of participants. This paper demonstrates that European-wide cross-border entrepreneurship education is an achievable outcome that has the potential to revolutionise the European entrepreneurial culture and push the boundaries of what is possible. Sharing the first-hand experiences of this project will be of interest to entrepreneurship educationalist, practitioners and policy makers

    Shade delays flowering in Medicago sativa

    Shade intolerant plants respond to the decrease in the red (R) to far-red light (FR) ratio (R:FR) occurring under shade by elongating stems and petioles and re-positioning leaves, in a race to out-compete neighbors for the sunlight resource. In some annual species, these shade-avoidance responses (SAS) are accompanied by the early induction of flowering. Anticipated flowering is viewed as a strategy to set seeds before the resources become severely limiting. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms of SAS in perennial forage crops like alfalfa (Medicago sativa). To study SAS in alfalfa, we exposed alfalfa plants to simulated shade by supplementing with FR. Low R:FR produced a classical SAS, such as increased internode and petiole length but, unexpectedly, delayed flowering. To understand the molecular mechanisms involved in uncoupling SAS from early flowering, we used a transcriptomic approach. SAS were likely mediated by increased expression of msPIF3 and msHB2 in low R:FR. Constitutive expression of these genes in Arabidopsis led to SAS, including early flowering, strongly suggesting their roles are conserved. Delayed flowering was likely to be mediated by the downregulation of msSPL3, which promotes flowering in both Arabidopsis and alfalfa. Shade-delayed flowering in alfalfa may be important to extend the vegetative phase under sub-optimal light conditions and thus assure the accumulation of reserves necessary to resume growth after the next season.     Antimicrobial and bactericidal impacts of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940 on fecal shedding of pathogenic bacteria in dairy calves and adult dogs

    The administration of B. amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940 to the dog diet has no significant effect on the hardness of the stool. Meanwhile, the bacillus count increases while the coliforms count decreases upon B. amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940 administration. This reveals that B. amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940 survived the gastrointestinal passage and rapidly colonized the dog intestine, which could positively affect the metabolism and composition of the intestinal microflora. These results show that B. amyloliquefaciens are a promising probiotic with an antimicrobial and bactericidal activities against the intestinal pathogenic bacteria for dairy calves and adult dogs.Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the bactericidal impacts of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940 on the shedding of faecal pathogenic bacteria in dairy calves (Experiment 1) and in adults dogs (experiment 2). In the calves experiment, a completely randomized design was used to investigate the faecal bacteria profile of Holstein dairy calves fed with either pasteurized waste milk (PWM; n = 9) or a formulated non-medicated milk replacer (NMR; n = 9) for 60 d. The NMR containing sodium-butyrate and the active probiotic B. amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940. In the dogs experiment, addition of same probiotic (i.e., B. amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940) was carried out in two stages. The first stage started from day 7–37, and the second from day 44–71. The assessment of faecal score measured on day 22, 37, 42, 57, 71 and 77 to determine the texture of the stools. Calves received PWM consumed (P < 0.05) more starter feed between day 16 and day 45. The calves fed NMR had more moisture faeces and less cough reflux than the PWM-calves. Feeding NMR to calves increased faecal Klebsiella oxytoca and Proteus vulgaris counts in comparison to PWM-calves

    Age-dependent defective TGF-beta1 signaling in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting

    Background: Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta 1) is a pleiotropic cytokine, which is deregulated in atherosclerosis; however the role of age in this process is unknown. We aimed to assess whether TGF-beta 1 signaling is affected by age. Methods: Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) were obtained from patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Levels of TGF-beta 1 were measured by ELISA in sera from 169 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The p27 expression was determined by Western blot from internal mammary arteries (IMA) obtained from CABG patients (n = 13). In VSMC from these patients undergoing abdominal surgery, secretion of TGF-beta 1 was determined by ELISA of cell-conditioned media. Results: In VSMC from aged patients we observed a lower TGF-beta 1 secretion, measured as TGF-beta 1 concentration in cell conditioned medium (p < 0.001). This effect was correlated to an age-dependent decrease of p27 expression in IMA from aged CABG patients. In a similar manner, there was an age-dependent decrease of serum TGF-beta 1 levels in CABG patients (p = 0.0195). Conclusions: VSMC from aged patients showed a higher degree of cellular senescence and it was associated to a lower TGF-beta 1 secretion and signaling.S

    Introduction. The pelvic floor (SP) is formed by a set of muscular structures, which together with the fascias and ligaments make up the pelvic diaphragm. The function of the SP is the support of the pelvic organs and maintain a correct position of these, influencing urination, intercourse, childbirth and defecation. A weakness or injury of these structures predisposes to the appearance of a symptomatology that can occur in isolation or in combination, one of the main problems being UI urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse POP(1). It is estimated a prevalence of UI in adults between 15 and 30%, presenting in all ages, detecting a progressive increase as age advances and POP in 50% of women who have had at least one vaginal delivery.(2-4) Objectives. Evaluate both clinically and electromyographically a group of women diagnosed with UI and / or POP, after performing a rehabilitative treatment and one year of follow-up. Material and methods. This is a longitudinal, analytical observational study of a prospective cohort type, where women aged between 18 and 85 years were evaluated in a period of time between January 2008 and January 2012. The variables used In the present study, they differed in clinical and electromyographic variables. For the evaluation of the MSP an intravaginal surface EMG was performed, which consisted in a quantitative muscular diagnostic evaluation and in which some known muscle parameters were obtained. A rehabilitation treatment protocol was designed, following the guidelines established according to scientific evidence. Results. In the present study a total of 241 women were included, whose average age was 50.4 years (SD = 12.3), the mean BMI was 27.7 kg / m2, the average duration of symptoms was 6.9 years (SD = 8.9). 88% of women consulted by IU and 29% by POP. The most frequent diagnosis was that of IUM in 118 women (49.0%), followed by SUI in 65 women (27.0%). 49.4% were menopausal, 85.1% had vaginal delivery, only 2.9% were nulliparous. The mean number of deliveries was 2.4 (SD = 1.1) and in 89% of the cases they suffered episiotomy. 92.1% of the women in the sample had urine leaks, 96.4% of them related to the effort. Of the total sample, 189 patients (78.4%) performed treatment in the SP Unit. The average number of sessions was 14.2 (SD = 7.8). At the end of the rehabilitation treatment, 92.3% of the patients reported finding themselves better, 42% of the women presented voiding urgencies, and 47.6% suffered from UUI. The analysis of repeated measures of the electromyographic variables before and after the rehabilitation treatment and during the year of follow-up, statistically significant increases were observed in the maximum values of the phasic contractions, the average values of the tonic contractions, the duration of the tonic contraction selected and the total power of the ttonic contraction. When the means of the maximum values of the phasic contractions were compared, the maximum values of the tonic contractions and the average values of the tonic contractions with the degrees of the modified Oxford scale obtained statistically significant results. Conclusions. The rehabilitation treatment has achieved an improvement perceived by the patients in 92% of them after finishing the treatment and an improvement in 75% at one year of follow-up. There is a decrease in the maximum values recorded in the EMG by age, decade by decade, experiencing a significant drop in the group of women ≥70 years

The method is based on the introduction of organic additives during the anti-solvent step in the perovskite thin-film deposition process. Additives passivate grain boundaries reducing non-radiative recombination. The method can be easily extended to other additives

    Clinical characteristics and evaluation of LDL-cholesterol treatment of the Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolemia Longitudinal Cohort Study (SAFEHEART)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients are at high risk for premature coronary heart disease (CHD). Despite the use of statins, most patients do not achieve an optimal LDL-cholesterol goal. The aims of this study are to describe baseline characteristics and to evaluate Lipid Lowering Therapy (LLT) in FH patients recruited in SAFEHEART.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p> <p>A cross-sectional analysis of cases recruited in the Spanish FH cohort at inclusion was performed. Demographic, lifestyle, medical and therapeutic data were collected by specific surveys. Blood samples for lipid profile and DNA were obtained. Genetic test for FH was performed through DNA-microarray. Data from 1852 subjects (47.5% males) over 19 years old were analyzed: 1262 (68.1%, mean age 45.6 years) had genetic diagnosis of FH and 590 (31.9%, mean age 41.3 years) were non-FH. Cardiovascular disease was present in 14% of FH and in 3.2% of non-FH subjects (P < 0.001), and was significantly higher in patients carrying a null mutation compared with those carrying a defective mutation (14.87% vs. 10.6%, respectively, P < 0.05). Prevalence of current smokers was 28.4% in FH subjects. Most FH cases were receiving LLT (84%). Although 51.5% were receiving treatment expected to reduce LDL-c levels at least 50%, only 13.6% were on maximum statin dose combined with ezetimibe. Mean LDL-c level in treated FH cases was 186.5 mg/dl (SD: 65.6) and only 3.4% of patients reached and LDL-c under 100 mg/dl. The best predictor for LDL-c goal attainment was the use of combined therapy with statin and ezetimibe.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although most of this high risk population is receiving LLT, prevalence of cardiovascular disease and LDL-c levels are still high and far from the optimum LDL-c therapeutic goal. However, LDL-c levels could be reduced by using more intensive LLT such as combined therapy with maximum statin dose and ezetimibe.</p
