The history of the African American community has been inexorably bound to the concepts of oppression, downgrading, racism, hatred and trauma. Although the association between racism and concomitant negative psychological outcome has been widely assessed, little work has been done to study the role of literature as a cultural means to promote resilience among this oppressed group. Langston Hughes (1902-1967) stands out as a novelist, poet and playwright, and is one of the primary contributors to the Harlem Renaissance movement. Following the framework of theories of resilience, this article analyses the representation of adversity and positive adaptation in Langston Hughes’s early stage poetry, and assesses his contribution to resilience among the African American people at a time of hardship and oppression.

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe list of indicators is a form of training material used for the Supports Intensity Scale—Children’s version (SIS-C). It is aimed at helping interviewers distinguishing between extraordinary and age-related typical support needs in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) when implementing the SIS-C, and thus improve supports planning. The aim of this study is to adapt and test the list of indicators’ content validity and rating scale’s functioning in Spain. A total of 222 general education teachers reported their agreement with each indicator description using a 5-point rating scale. A total of 353 of 366 indicators showed evidence of content validity, whereas analyses on the rating scale highlighted the necessity of subsuming one of the scale categories within another. The need for developing research-based training materials to develop training programs on the use of the SIS-C to support decision-making concerning supports planning with students with IDD, the relevance of using the latest methodological approaches available when required, and future lines of research are discussed.Unión Europea Programa Erasmus - (grant 2017-3338/001-001 (project 592127-EPP-1-2017-1-BE-EPPKA3-IPI-SOC IN)Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad - (grant BES-2016-078252)Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad y Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) - (Grant PID2019-110127GB-100

Supplementary data are available at Human Reproduction Update online: https://academic.oup.com/humupd/article-lookup/doi/10.1093/humupd/dmae008#supplementary-dataBACKGROUND The increasing prevalence of obesity worldwide poses a significant threat to reproductive function owing, in part, to hormonal disturbances caused by negative feedback between excess adiposity and the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis. Consequently, finding the most appropriate strategies to lose weight and improve ovulation in women with overweight or obesity is a clinically relevant matter that needs to be investigated. A comprehensive comparison of the independent and combined efficacy of lifestyle and/or pharmacological interventions on BMI, ovulation, and hormonal profile in women with overweight or obesity at risk of anovulatory infertility would facilitate improving fertility strategies in this population. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE This study aimed to evaluate the comparative efficacy of exercise, diet, and pharmacological interventions on BMI, ovulation, and hormonal profile in reproductive-aged women with overweight or obesity. SEARCH METHODS A systematic review was performed by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library up to 14 December 2023, for randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of exercise, diet and/or pharmacological interventions (i.e. weight-lowering drugs or ovulation inducers) on BMI, ovulation, and/or hormonal profile in reproductive-aged women with overweight or obesity. We performed frequentist random-effect network meta-analyses and rated the certainty of the evidence. The primary outcomes were BMI and ovulation rate, and the secondary outcomes were serum reproductive hormone levels (gonadotrophins, androgens, or oestrogens). We performed sensitivity analyses, including the studies that only involved women with PCOS. OUTCOMES Among 1190 records screened, 148 full texts were assessed for eligibility resulting in 95 trials (9910 women), of which 53% presented a high or unclear risk of bias. The network meta-analyses revealed that, compared to control: diet combined with weight-lowering drugs (mean difference (MD) −2.61 kg/m2; 95% CI −3.04 to −2.19; τ2 = 0.22) and adding exercise (MD −2.35 kg/m2; 95% CI −2.81 to −1.89; τ2 = 0.22) led to the greatest decrease in BMI; exercise combined with diet and ovulation inducers (risk ratio (RR) 7.15; 95% CI 1.94–26.40; τ2 = 0.07) and exercise combined with diet and weight-lowering drugs (RR 4.80; 95% CI 1.67–13.84; τ2 = 0.07) produced the highest increase in ovulation rate; and exercise combined with diet and weight-lowering drugs was the most effective strategy in reducing testosterone levels (standardized mean difference (SMD) −2.91; 95% CI −4.07 to −1.74; τ2 = 2.25), the third most effective strategy in increasing sex hormone-binding globulin levels (SMD 2.37; 95% CI 0.99–3.76; τ2 = 2.48), and it was coupled with being ranked first in terms of free androgen index reduction (SMD −1.59; 95% CI −3.18 to 0.01; τ2 = 1.91). The surface under the cumulative ranking curve scores suggested that: diet combined with weight-lowering drugs is the strategy most likely (94%) to produce the highest BMI reduction; and exercise combined with diet and ovulation inducers is the strategy most likely (89%) to produce the highest ovulation rate improvement. The sensitivity analyses, which exclusively included studies involving women diagnosed with PCOS, were consistent with the results presented above. WIDER IMPLICATIONS Overall, the findings of this network meta-analysis indicate that the combination of exercise, diet, and pharmacological interventions is effective for weight loss, improving ovulation, and normalizing the androgen levels of women with overweight or obesity. Although higher quality studies are needed, these results support that the optimal treatment strategy for women with overweight or obesity wishing to conceive must consider exercise, diet, and pharmacological interventions during the shared decision-making process.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO), Plan Nacional de IþDþi call RETOS 2018 (grant number RTI2018-093302-A-I00).Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of the government of Spain Grant number FPU20/05746 Grant number FPU21/04573Plan Propio de Investigación, ‘Gerty Cori program’, from University of Almería, SpainProjects Endo-Map PID2021- 12728OB-100 and ROSY CNS2022-135999 funded by MICIU/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by FEDER, EUFunding for open access charge: Universidad de Almería (Spain)/CBU

Enzymatic upgrading of nanochitin using an ancient lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase

    Get PDF
Numerous enzymes have the potential to upgrade biomass, converting it into high-tech materials for new applications. However, the features of natural enzymes often limit their use beyond chemical conversion of the substrate. The development of strategies for the enzymatic conversion of biomass into high-value materials may broaden the range of applications of enzymes and enzyme design techniques. A relevant case is lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO), a class of enzymes that catalyzes the oxidative cleavage of glycosidic bonds. Here, we show that an ancestral LPMO can generate chitin nanocrystals. Physicochemical characterization of the chitin nanocrystals demonstrates modifications that make it superior compared to chitin obtained by chemical treatments. We show that the nanocrystals are suitable for controlled 2D and 3D cell cultures, as well as for engineering a biomatrix that combines with graphene oxide, forming a hybrid conductive bioink. This work has been supported by grants PID2019-109087RB-I00 to R.P.-J. from Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Evaluación formativa entre pares. Experiencias en todos los niveles universitarios

    Get PDF

Identification of MiRNAs as Viable Aggressiveness Biomarkers for Prostate Cancer

    Get PDF
MiRNAs play a relevant role in PC (prostate cancer) by the regulation in the expression of several pathways’ AR (androgen receptor), cellular cycle, apoptosis, MET (mesenchymal epithelium transition), or metastasis. Here, we report the role of several miRNAs’ expression patterns, such as miR-miR-93-5p, miR-23c, miR-210-3p, miR-221-3p, miR-592, miR-141, miR-375, and miR-130b, with relevance in processes like cell proliferation and MET. Using Trizol® extraction protocol and TaqMan™ specific probes for amplification, we performed miRNAs’ analysis of 159 PC fresh tissues and 60 plasmas from peripheral blood samples. We had clinical data from all samples including PSA, Gleason, TNM, and D’Amico risk. Moreover, a bioinformatic analysis in TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) was included to analyze the effect of the most relevant miRNAs according to aggressiveness in an extensive cohort (n = 531). We found that miR-210-3p, miR-23c, miR-592, and miR-93-5p are the most suitable biomarkers for PC aggressiveness and diagnosis, respectively. In fact, according with our results, miR93-5p seems the most promising non-invasive biomarker for PC. To sum up, miR-210-3p, miR-23c, miR-592, and miR93-5p miRNAs are suggested to be potential biomarkers for PC risk stratification that could be included in non-invasive strategies such as liquid biopsy in precision medicine for PC management.Regional Ministry of Health and Families of the Andalusian Government (ref: PI-0319-2018)FIBAO (Andalusian Public Foundation for Biomedical Research in Eastern Andalusia, “Alejandro Otero”
