From therapeutic landscapes to healthy spaces, places and practices: a scoping review
The term 'therapeutic landscapes' was first coined by health geographer, Wilbert Gesler, in 1992 to explore why certain environments seem to contribute to a healing sense of place. Since then, the concept and its applications have evolved and expanded as researchers have examined the dynamic material, affective and socio-cultural roots and routes to experiences of health and wellbeing in specific places. Drawing on a scoping review of studies of these wider therapeutic landscapes published between 2007 and 2016, this paper explores how, where, and to what benefit the 'therapeutic landscapes' concept has been applied to date, and how such applications have contributed to its critical evolution as a relevant and useful concept in health geography. Building on themes included in two earlier (1999, 2007) edited volumes on Therapeutic Landscapes, we summarise the key themes identified in the review, broadly in keeping with the core material, social, spiritual and symbolic dimensions of the concept initially posited by Gesler. Through this process, we identify strengths and limitations of the concept and its applications, as well as knowledge gaps and promising future directions for work in this field, reflecting critically on its value within health geography and its potential contribution to wider interdisciplinary discussions and debates around 'healthy' spaces, places, and related practices. A new population of recently quenched elliptical galaxies in the SDSS
We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the properties of massive
elliptical galaxies in the local Universe (z\leq0.08) that have unusually blue
optical colors. Through careful inspection, we distinguish elliptical from
non-elliptical morphologies among a large sample of similarly blue galaxies
with high central light concentrations (c_r\geq2.6). These blue ellipticals
comprise 3.7 per cent of all c_r\geq2.6 galaxies with stellar masses between
10^10 and 10^11 h^{-2} {\rm M}_{\sun}. Using published fiber spectra
diagnostics, we identify a unique subset of 172 non-star-forming ellipticals
with distinctly blue urz colors and young (< 3 Gyr) light-weighted stellar
ages. These recently quenched ellipticals (RQEs) have a number density of
2.7-4.7\times 10^{-5}\,h^3\,{\rm Mpc}^{-3} and sufficient numbers above
2.5\times10^{10} h^{-2} {\rm M}_{\sun} to account for more than half of the
expected quiescent growth at late cosmic time assuming this phase lasts 0.5
Gyr. RQEs have properties that are consistent with a recent merger origin
(i.e., they are strong `first-generation' elliptical candidates), yet few
involved a starburst strong enough to produce an E+A signature. The preferred
environment of RQEs (90 per cent reside at the centers of < 3\times
10^{12}\,h^{-1}{\rm M}_{\sun} groups) agrees well with the `small group scale'
predicted for maximally efficient spiral merging onto their halo center and
rules out satellite-specific quenching processes. The high incidence of Seyfert
and LINER activity in RQEs and their plausible descendents may heat the
atmospheres of small host halos sufficiently to maintain quenching.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures. Revised version; accepted for publication in

Metabolic Syndrome Abolishes Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Receptor Agonist Stimulation of SERCA in Coronary Smooth Muscle
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) doubles the risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists induce weight loss, increase insulin secretion, and improve glucose tolerance. Studies in healthy animals suggest cardioprotective properties of GLP-1 receptor agonists, perhaps partially mediated by improved sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) ATPase (SERCA) activity. We examined the acute effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists on coronary smooth muscle cells (CSM) enzymatically isolated from lean, healthy Ossabaw miniature swine. Intracellular Ca(2+) handling was interrogated with fura-2. The GLP-1 receptor agonist exenatide activated SERCA but did not alter other Ca(2+) transporters. Further, we tested the hypothesis that chronic, in vivo treatment with GLP-1 receptor agonist AC3174 would attenuate coronary artery disease (CAD) in swine with MetS. MetS was induced in 20 swine by 6 months' feeding of a hypercaloric, atherogenic diet. Swine were then randomized (n = 10/group) into placebo or AC3174 treatment groups and continued the diet for an additional 6 months. AC3174 treatment attenuated weight gain, increased insulin secretion, and improved glucose tolerance. Intravascular ultrasound and histology showed no effect of AC3174 on CAD. MetS abolished SERCA activation by GLP-1 receptor agonists. We conclude that MetS confers vascular resistance to GLP-1 receptor agonists, partially through impaired cellular signaling steps involving SERCA
Radiative transfer with scattering for domain-decomposed 3D MHD simulations of cool stellar atmospheres
We present the implementation of a radiative transfer solver with coherent
scattering in the new BIFROST code for radiative magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD)
simulations of stellar surface convection. The code is fully parallelized using
MPI domain decomposition, which allows for large grid sizes and improved
resolution of hydrodynamical structures. We apply the code to simulate the
surface granulation in a solar-type star, ignoring magnetic fields, and
investigate the importance of coherent scattering for the atmospheric
structure. A scattering term is added to the radiative transfer equation,
requiring an iterative computation of the radiation field. We use a
short-characteristics-based Gauss-Seidel acceleration scheme to compute
radiative flux divergences for the energy equation. The effects of coherent
scattering are tested by comparing the temperature stratification of three 3D
time-dependent hydrodynamical atmosphere models of a solar-type star: without
scattering, with continuum scattering only, and with both continuum and line
scattering. We show that continuum scattering does not have a significant
impact on the photospheric temperature structure for a star like the Sun.
Including scattering in line-blanketing, however, leads to a decrease of
temperatures by about 350\,K below log tau < -4. The effect is opposite to that
of 1D hydrostatic models in radiative equilibrium, where scattering reduces the
cooling effect of strong LTE lines in the higher layers of the photosphere.
Coherent line scattering also changes the temperature distribution in the high
atmosphere, where we observe stronger fluctuations compared to a treatment of
lines as true absorbers.Comment: A&A, in pres
Effect of different obesogenic diets on pancreatic histology in Ossabaw miniature swine
OBJECTIVE:
Obesity is a factor in the outcome and severity of pancreatic conditions. We examined the effect of hypercaloric diets on the pancreata of Ossabaw swine, a large animal model of metabolic syndrome and obesity.
METHODS:
Swine were fed with 1 of 4 diets: high-fructose (n = 9), atherogenic (n = 10), modified atherogenic (n = 6), or eucaloric standard diet (n = 12) for 24 weeks. Serum chemistries were measured, and pancreata were examined for histological abnormalities including steatosis, inflammation or fibrosis, insulin content, and oxidative stress.
RESULTS:
The fructose, atherogenic, and modified atherogenic diet groups exhibited obesity, metabolic syndrome, islet enlargement, and significantly increased pancreatic steatosis (22.9% ± 7.5%, 19.7% ± 7.7%, and 38.7% ± 15.3% fat in total tissue area, respectively) compared with controls (9.3% ± 1.9%; P < 0.05). The modified atherogenic diet group showed significantly increased oxidative stress levels as evidenced by elevated serum malondialdehyde (3.0 ± 3.3 vs 1.5 ± 0.3 μmol/L in controls; P = 0.006) and pancreatic malondialdehyde (0.1 ± 0.12 vs 0.04 ± 0.01 nmol/mg protein in controls; P = 0.01). None of the swine exhibited pancreatitis or cellular injury.
CONCLUSIONS:
Ossabaw swine fed with a modified atherogenic diet developed significant pancreatic steatosis and increased oxidative stress, but no other histological abnormalities were observed
The scattering of muons in low Z materials
This paper presents the measurement of the scattering of 172 MeV/c muons in
assorted materials, including liquid hydrogen, motivated by the need to
understand ionisation cooling for muon acceleration.
Data are compared with predictions from the Geant 4 simulation code and this
simulation is used to deconvolute detector effects. The scattering
distributions obtained are compared with the Moliere theory of multiple
scattering and, in the case of liquid hydrogen, with ELMS. With the exception
of ELMS, none of the models are found to provide a good description of the
data. The results suggest that ionisation cooling will work better than would
be predicted by Geant 4.7.0p01.Comment: pdfeTeX V 3.141592-1.21a-2.2, 30 pages with 22 figure
Measurement of the hadronic photon structure function F_{2}^{γ} at LEP2
The hadronic structure function of the photon F_{2}^{γ} (x, Q²) is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the photon virtuality Q² using deep-inelastic scattering data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP at e⁺e⁻ centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F_{2}^{γ} are extended to an average Q² of 〈Q²〉=780 GeV² using data in the kinematic range 0.15<x<0.98. The Q² evolution of F_{2}^{γ} is studied for 12.1<〈Q²〉<780 GeV² using three ranges of x. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F_{2}^{γ} with F_{2}^{γ} (Q²)/α = (0.08±0.02⁺⁰·⁰⁵_₀.₀₃) + (0.13±0.01⁺⁰·⁰¹_₀.₀₁) lnQ², where Q² is in GeV², for the central x region 0.10–0.60. Several parameterisations of F_{2}^{γ} are in qualitative agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data
Energy spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies
We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei
from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment Cosmic Ray Energetics
And Mass (CREAM). The instrument included different particle detectors to
provide redundant charge identification and measure the energy of CRs up to
several hundred TeV. The measured individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg,
Si, and Fe are presented up to eV. The spectral shape looks
nearly the same for these primary elements and it can be fitted to an power law in energy. Moreover, a new measurement of the absolute
intensity of nitrogen in the 100-800 GeV/ energy range with smaller errors
than previous observations, clearly indicates a hardening of the spectrum at
high energy. The relative abundance of N/O at the top of the atmosphere is
measured to be (stat.)(sys.) at 800
GeV/, in good agreement with a recent result from the first CREAM flight.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysical

A Tale of Three Cities : OmegaCAM discovers multiple sequences in the color-magnitude diagram of the Orion Nebula Cluster
Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics, © 2017 ESO. Published by EDP Sciences. As part of the Accretion Discs in H with OmegaCAM (ADHOC) survey, we imaged in r, i and H-alpha a region of 12x8 square degrees around the Orion Nebula Cluster. Thanks to the high-quality photometry obtained, we discovered three well-separated pre-main sequences in the color-magnitude diagram. The populations are all concentrated towards the cluster's center. Although several explanations can be invoked to explain these sequences we are left with two competitive, but intriguing, scenarios: a population of unresolved binaries with an exotic mass ratio distribution or three populations with different ages. Independent high-resolution spectroscopy supports the presence of discrete episodes of star formation, each separated by about a million years. The stars from the two putative youngest populations rotate faster than the older ones, in agreement with the evolution of stellar rotation observed in pre-main sequence stars younger than 4 Myr in several star forming regions. Whatever the final explanation, our results prompt for a revised look at the formation mode and early evolution of stars in clusters.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Measurement of the charm structure function F_{2,c)^{γ} of the photon at LEP
The production of charm quarks is studied in deep-inelastic electron–photon scattering using data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at nominal e⁺e⁻ centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. The charm quarks have been identified by full reconstruction of charged D* mesons using their decays into D⁰π with the D⁰ observed in two decay modes with charged particle final states, Kπ and Kπππ. The cross-section σ^{D*} for production of charged D* in the reaction e⁺e⁻→e⁺e⁻D*Χ is measured in a restricted kinematical region using two bins in Bjorken x, 0.00140.1 the perturbative QCD calculation at next-to-leading order agrees perfectly with the measured cross-section. For x<0.1 the measured cross-section is 43.8±14.3±6.3±2.8 pb with a next-to-leading order prediction of 17.0⁺²·⁹_₂.₃ pb
