Increasing human pressure has strongly impacted the littoral environment, altering the habitats and population parameters of some species. The Mediterranean Sea is one of the regions that have been highly affected by these events. In response to these events, marine protected areas (MPAs) have emerged as one of the main conservation tools for marine habitats and species. In this regard, harvesting of limpets (Patella spp.) is a good example of the impact of human activity on the coast. Limpets are mollusks that are collected as food or fishing bait, and their exploitation causes an immediate decrease in the density and size structure of individuals. In the Mediterranean Sea, the genus Patella is represented by five species: Patella rustica, P. caerulea, P. ulyssiponensis, P. ferruginea, and P. depressa. To verify the effectiveness of the MPAs, a deep review of 75 studies on Patella spp. in the Mediterranean Sea was conducted to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of studies. Data extracted from these articles were used to assess the effect of protection on the density and size of P. ferruginea. Regarding spatial distribution, the studies reviewed were performed at 67 sites in 13 countries, of which 23 were in MPAs and 44 in non-protected or control areas. The findings of this study show that P. ferruginea is the species most studied, because it is one of the most threatened marine invertebrates in the Mediterranean Sea. This explains the temporal distribution of the studies, which coincides with the establishment of the conservation status and the concern about the population status of P. ferruginea. Analysis of the effect of protection on the density and mean size of P. ferruginea individuals revealed no significant difference in mean density between the control sites and MPAs. However, mean size between individuals was significantly higher in MPAs than control sites. This pattern may be related to intra- and interspecific competition between individuals

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, brands play a fundamental role in the large and globalized market in which we find ourselves, since its main function is to distinguish the different products and services offered in the market. Due to the rapid growth of economic traffic, the evolution in the last decade and the propensity to consume, as a result of this globalization the obligation to create a criterion of distinction between some companies and others appears, and that is how the brand appears, running as The main distinguishing sign of entrepreneurs. What appeared as an obligation of differentiation when operating in a market full of competitors, gave rise to entrepreneurs to use it as a strategy to obtain competitive advantages over the rest. Due to this situation, it was necessary to create a more complete and detailed regulation that included all the aspects that encompass the registration of a trademark. For this, it is taken into account what is included in the current Trademark Law 17/2001, and based on this, jurisprudence will be developed throughout this work and aspects relevant to its correct understanding.Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresa

Kinematic Analysis of a Tendon-Driven Hybrid Rigid–Flexible Four-Bar; Application to Optimum Dimensional Synthesis

    Get PDF
In design matters, mechanisms with deformable elements are a step behind those with rigid bars, particularly if dimensional synthesis is considered a fundamental part of mechanism design. For the purposes of this work, a hybrid rigid–flexible four-bar mechanism has been chosen, the input bar being a continuum tendon of constant curvature. The coupler curves are noticeably more complex but offer more possibilities than the classical rigid four-bar counterpart. One of the objectives of this work is to completely characterize the coupler curves of this hybrid rigid–flexible mechanism, determining the number and type of circuits as well as constituent branches. Another important aim is to apply optimization techniques to the dimensional synthesis of path generation. Considerable progress in finding the best design solutions can be obtained if all the acquired knowledge about the coupler curves of this hybrid mechanism is integrated into the optimization algorithm. This research was funded by the Spanish government through the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Project PID2020-116176GB-I00), financed by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, and funded by the Departamento de Educación from the Regional Basque Government through Project IT1480-22

Fabrication and characterization of 2D photonic crystals for new optoelectronic devices

    Get PDF
Photonic crystals were discovered in the 80s as a possible solution to the control of the spontaneous emission and localization of light. Nevertheless only in recent years, with the spreading of nanotechnologies, the first applications with high technological impact have been achieved, like planar photonic crystal lasers or the nanostructured photonic crystal waveguides. Nowadays new types of optoelectronic devices like single photon emitters based on photonic crystal nanocavities are being pursued. In this talk we will show the fabrication and characterization of new photonic bandgap devices, like Suzuki-phase laser emitters or ring-like emitters, and we will show their emission properties in the far field and their tuning by the fabrication process. These new devices may be used as new optical sensors and as efficient nanosources of laser light. L. J. Hybrid Optimization Based Mathematical Procedure for Dimensional Synthesis of Slider-Crank Linkage

    Get PDF
In this paper, an optimization procedure for path generation synthesis of the slider-crank mechanism will be presented. The proposed approach is based on a hybrid strategy, mixing local and global optimization techniques. Regarding the local optimization scheme, based on the null gradient condition, a novel methodology to solve the resulting non-linear equations is developed. The solving procedure consists of decoupling two subsystems of equations which can be solved separately and following an iterative process. In relation to the global technique, a multi-start method based on a genetic algorithm is implemented. The fitness function incorporated in the genetic algorithm will take as arguments the set of dimensional parameters of the slider-crank mechanism. Several illustrative examples will prove the validity of the proposed optimization methodology, in some cases achieving an even better result compared to mechanisms with a higher number of dimensional parameters, such as the four-bar mechanism or the Watt’s mechanism. The authors wish to acknowledge financial support received from the Spanish government through the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (Project DPI2015−67626-P (MINECO/FEDER, UE)), the support for the research group through Project Ref. COVID-19; SARS-Cov-2; Síndrome coronari agutCOVID-19; SARS-Cov-2; Síndrome coronario agudoCOVID-19; SARS-Cov-2; Acute coronary syndromeBackground: There is a lack of knowledge about the real incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with COVID-19, their clinical characteristics, and their prognoses. Objective: We investigated the incidence, clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of ACS in patients with COVID-19 in the emergency department. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all COVID-19 patients diagnosed with ACS in 62 Spanish emergency departments between March and April 2020 (the first wave of COVID-19). We formed 2 control groups: COVID-19 patients without ACS (control A) and non-COVID-19 patients with ACS (control B). Unadjusted comparisons between cases and control subjects were performed regarding 58 characteristics and outcomes. Results: We identified 110 patients with ACS in 74,814 patients with COVID-19 attending the ED (1.48% [95% confidence interval {CI} 1.21-1.78%]). This incidence was lower than that observed in non-COVID-19 patients (3.64% [95% CI 3.54-3.74%]; odds ratio [OR] 0.40 [95% CI 0.33-0.49]). The clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 associated with a higher risk of presenting ACS were: previous coronary artery disease, age ≥60 years, hypertension, chest pain, raised troponin, and hypoxemia. The need for hospitalization and admission to intensive care and in-hospital mortality were higher in cases than in control group A (adjusted OR [aOR] 6.36 [95% CI 1.84-22.1], aOR 4.63 [95% CI 1.88-11.4], and aOR 2.46 [95% CI 1.15-5.25]). When comparing cases with control group B, the aOR of admission to intensive care was 0.41 (95% CI 0.21-0.80), while the aOR for in-hospital mortality was 5.94 (95% CI 2.84-12.4). Conclusions: The incidence of ACS in patients with COVID-19 attending the emergency department was low, around 1.48%, but could be increased in some circumstances. Patients with COVID-19 with ACS had a worse prognosis than control subjects with higher in-hospital mortalit
