Assessment of IT Infrastructures: A Model Driven Approach

    Get PDF
Several approaches to evaluate IT infrastructure architectures have been proposed, mainly by supplier and consulting firms. However, they do not have a unified approach of these architectures where all stakeholders can cement the decision-making process, thus facilitating comparability as well as the verification of best practices adoption. The main goal of this dissertation is the proposal of a model-based approach to mitigate this problem. A metamodel named SDM (System Definition Model) and expressed with the UML (Unified Modeling Language) is used to represent structural and operational knowledge on the infrastructures. This metamodel is automatically instantiated through the capture of infrastructures configurations of existing distributed architectures, using a proprietary tool and a transformation tool that was built in the scope of this dissertation. The quantitative evaluation is performed using the M2DM (Meta-Model Driven Measurement) approach that uses OCL (Object Constraint Language) to formulate the required metrics. This proposal is expected to increase the understandability of IT infrastructures by all stakeholders (IT architects, application developers, testers, operators and maintenance teams) as well as to allow expressing their strategies of management and evolution. To illustrate the use of the proposed approach, we assess the complexity of some real cases in the diachronic and synchronic perspective

Context. The design of Information Technology (IT) infrastructures is a challenging task since it implies proficiency in several areas that are rarely mastered by a single person, thus raising communication problems among those in charge of conceiving, deploying, operating and maintaining/managing them. Most IT infrastructure designs are based on proprietary models, known as blueprints or product-oriented architectures, defined by vendors to facilitate the configuration of a particular solution, based upon their services and products portfolio. Existing blueprints can be facilitators in the design of solutions for a particular vendor or technology. However, since organizations may have infrastructure components from multiple vendors, the use of blueprints aligned with commercial product(s) may cause integration problems among these components and can lead to vendor lock-in. Additionally, these blueprints have a short lifecycle, due to their association with product version(s) or a specific technology, which hampers their usage as a tool for the reuse of IT infrastructure knowledge. Objectives. The objectives of this dissertation are (i) to mitigate the inability to reuse knowledge in terms of best practices in the design of IT infrastructures and, (ii) to simplify the usage of this knowledge, making the IT infrastructure designs simpler, quicker and better documented, while facilitating the integration of components from different vendors and minimizing the communication problems between teams. Method. We conducted an online survey and performed a systematic literature review to support the state of the art and to provide evidence that this research was relevant and had not been conducted before. A model-driven approach was also used for the formalization and empirical validation of well-formedness rules to enhance the overall process of designing IT infrastructures. To simplify and support the design process, a modeling tool, including its abstract and concrete syntaxes was also extended to include the main contributions of this dissertation. Results. We obtained 123 responses to the online survey. Their majority were from people with more than 15 years experience with IT infrastructures. The respondents confirmed our claims regarding the lack of formality and documentation problems on knowledge transfer and only 19% considered that their current practices to represent IT Infrastructures are efficient. A language for modeling IT Infrastructures including an abstract and concrete syntax is proposed to address the problem of informality in their design. A catalog of IT Infrastructure patterns is also proposed to allow expressing best practices in their design. The modeling tool was also evaluated and according to 84% of the respondents, this approach decreases the effort associated with IT infrastructure design and 89% considered that the use of a repository with infrastructure patterns, will help to improve the overall quality of IT infrastructures representations. A controlled experiment was also performed to assess the effectiveness of both the proposed language and the pattern-based IT infrastructure design process supported by the tool. Conclusion. With this work, we contribute to improve the current state of the art in the design of IT infrastructures replacing the ad-hoc methods with more formal ones to address the problems of ambiguity, traceability and documentation, among others, that characterize most of IT infrastructure representations. Tese de mestrado, Física (Física Nuclear e Partículas) Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2021The present dissertation concerns atomic structure calculations for lanthanide and actinide ions that are significant to kilonovae modeling of the ejecta spectra. In particular, calculations for Nd III and U III, two representative rare-earth ions, were achieved. Therefore, in this work we try to bridge the gap created by the lack of atomic structure calculations f-block ions available in the literature, while also providing valuable insight for future calculations. We concentrated on level energies and oscillator strength calculations for electric dipole transitions (E1) since these are the most critical atomic parameters for simulating the flux of kilonovae in Local Thermodinamical Equilibrium (LTE). We mainly use the publicly accessible Flexible Atomic Code (FAC) for the computations, which employs a Relativistic Configuration Interaction (RCI) method. Not only that, but we compare our results to those obtained using a Multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method as well as to available computational and experimental data. We demonstrated that discrepancies in the opacity spectra of Nd III across various calculations are higher at the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. At longer wavelengths the sensitivity of the opacity with the accuracy of the calculations seems to decrease. Additionally, we showed the opacity of U III to be about an order of magnitude higher than the opacity of Nd III due to a higher density of levels of the actinide. In general, we anticipate this feature of the spectrum to extend for more lanthanide-actinide pairs and, therefore, that the opacity of actinides to have a measurable impact in the luminosity of kilonovae

TCC (graduação)- Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Campus Curitibanos. Agronomia. As avaliações consistiram no desenvolvimento vegetativo, produção e de qualidade de fruto: sólidos solúveis totais (SST), acidez titulável total (ATT), relação SST/ATT e pH do suco. O AG3 afetou somente o pH do suco do fruto. The blackberry is a rustic species, with good productive capacity and its fruits have antioxidant properties that are beneficial to human health. Despite having been introduced in Brazil in the 70s, there are few works related to management practices. In this context, the objective of the work was to evaluate the vegetative development, production and quality of blackberry fruits as a function of different management practices. The experiments were carried out at the experimental farm at UFSC, Curitibanos SC. In experiment 1, the genotypes (Xavante and Black 145) were evaluated as a function of doses of gibberellic acid (AG3). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 2x2 factorial, that is, two genotypes and two doses of gibberellic acid. With three repetitions and two plants per repetition. In experiment 2, types of pruning (long and short) were evaluated for the Xingu cultivar. In experiment 3, the permanence time of the fruits in the orchard and post-harvest storage time were evaluated. The orchard design was randomized blocks, with three replications, each consisting of five plants. Finally, in experiment 4, the quality of whole juice was evaluated. The design was completely randomized with three types of juice and three storage times. Three repetitions and three bottles per repetition were used. The evaluations consisted of vegetative development, production and fruit quality: total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acidity (TT), TSS/ATT ratio and juice pH. O productivity. The permanence times of the fruits in the field did not affect the ATT, except at 21 days of storage. During storage, the fruits removed immediately from the orchard showed a significant response during the evaluated periods, reaching the lowest ATT value in 10.11 days. For the pH of the juice in fruits harvested and left in the field for a longer time in the orchard, it was modified during the storage period. For the quality of homemade whole blackberry juice, a higher value for ATT of whole blackberry juice was observed in relation to mixed blackberry + apple juice and apple juice. The pH of the whole juice during storage stabilized. For the experiments, it was found from the results that the use of AG3 did not influence the quality of the fruits. Regarding the types of pruning, it did not affect productivity. And it was still not possible to accurately identify the storage period of the fruits. Finally, the experiment with different types of juices was satisfactory, as it allows the mixing of fruit, improving quality

We have performed longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements on heavily n-doped silicon for donor concentrations exceeding the critical value for the metal-non-metal transition. The results are compared to those from a many-body theory where the donor-electrons are assumed to reside at the bottom of the many-valley conduction band of the host. Good qualitative agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

This dissertation presents the theme of the rehabilitation of old buildings, based on a proposal of a methodological approach to be applied in the interventions in buildings marked by their heritage value. In recent years there has been a great interest from national entities on the rehabilitation of buildings, however, it is necessary to question the extent to which these same entities govern their activity within the principles imposed by the International Charters and existing legislation. Acting in heritage protected old buildings imposes a greater difficulty and exigency, in particular at the technical level, obliging the promoters to implement intervention strategies whose main objective is to preserve the original building for the next generations. Being a demanding learning subject, this work has as its objective the definition of a set of principles of theoretical and technical character, aiming to understand the typical aspects of portuguese construction in the old buildings, analysis of anomalies and characterization tests of the materials, finalizing the study carried out on an intervention methodology that takes into account all relevant aspects of the subject
