On linear problems with complementarity constraints

    Get PDF
A mathematical program with complementarity constraints (MPCC) is an optimization problem with equality/inequality constraints in which a complementarity type constraint is considered in addition. This complementarity condition modifies the feasible region so as to remove many of those properties that are usually important to obtain the standard optimality conditions, e.g., convexity and constraint qualifications. In the literature, these problems have been tackled in many different ways: methods that introduce a parameter in order to relax the complementarity constraint, modified simplex methods that use an appropriate rule for choosing the non basic variable in order to preserve complementarity. We introduce a decomposition method of the given problem in a sequence of parameterized problems, that aim to force complementarity. Once we obtain a feasible solution, by means of duality results, we are able to eliminate a set of parameterized problems which are not worthwhile to be considered. Furthermore, we provide some bounds for the optimal value of the objective function and we present an application of the proposed technique in a non trivial example

In 1940, when Italy entered into the World War, the affinity between Mussolini’s regime and Francoist Spain reached its highest levels. However, the spectacular Fascist military defeats in the autumn-winter of 1940-1941 – in Africa, in Greece and in the Mediterranean Sea – showed the inconsistency of Italian ambitions and aroused obvious perplexities even among the staunchest supporters of Fascism. Therefore, this article will analyse the attitude shown by the Spanish press of that time: a press that, although rigidly controlled by the dictatorship, could not exempt itself from describing Italian failures, and that allows us to glimpse, in its articles, the first doubts and the first unfavourable comments about a regime that – until then – had been an indisputable political and ideological reference model

The confusion of newspapers facing the Italian military and political catastrophe, after years of praising Mussolini’s system, expresses itself in often contradictory reports and articles: important events such as the dismissal of the Duce and the formation of Badoglio’s Government, the armistice and the creation of the Social Republic, are objects of radically different analysis. Thereby, we can notice an absolutely original aspect of the press in these years: its lack of uniformity, even in the framework of a general evolution of its judgment about Fascist experience. Innovative modular SMA actuator

    Get PDF
A modular design for a shape memory actuator is proposed. The actuator is able to perform linear movements, while the modularity allows force and/or stroke improvements. Experimental results show how the behavior of the proposed implementation is sufficient for a wide class of problems and can be improved with proper developments

Predicting disordered speech comprehensibility from Goodness of Pronunciation scores

International audienceSpeech production assessment in disordered speech relies on tests such as intelligibility and/or comprehensibility tests. These tests are subjective and time-consuming for both the patients and the practitioners. In this paper, we report on the use of automatically-derived pronunciation scores to predict comprehensibility ratings, on a pilot development corpus comprised of 120 utterances recorded by 12 speakers with distinct pathologies. We found high correlation values (0.81) between Goodness Of Pronunciation (GOP) scores and comprehensibility ratings. We compare the use of a baseline implementation of the GOP algorithmwith a variant called forced-GOP, which showed better results. A linear regression model allowed to predict comprehensibility scores with a 20.9% relative error, compared to the reference scores given by two expert judges. A correlation value of 0.74 was obtained between both the manual and the predicted scores. Most of the prediction errors concern the speakers who have the most extreme ratings (the lowest or the largest values), showing that the predicted score range was globally more limited than the one of the manual scores due to the simplicity of the model

Physical rehabilitation based on robotic systems has the potential to cover the patient’s need of improvement of upper extremity functionalities. In this article, the state of the art of resistant and assistive upper limb exoskeleton robots and their control are thoroughly investigated. Afterward, a single-degree-of-freedom exoskeleton matching the elbow–forearm has been advanced to grant a valid rehabilitation therapy for persons with physical disability of upper limb motion. The authors have focused on the control system based on the use of electromyography signals as an input to drive the joint movement and manage the robotics arm. The correlation analysis between surface electromyography signal and the force exerted by the subject was studied in objects’ grasping tests with the purpose of validating the methodology. The authors developed an innovative surface electromyography force–based active control that adjusts the force exerted by the device during rehabilitation. The control was validated by an experimental campaign on healthy subjects simulating disease on an arm, with positive results that confirm the proposed solution and that open the way to future researches
