Deregulation of conveyancing markets in England and Wales
There has been much concern in recent years with whether the âprivilegeâ of self- regulation accorded to the professions works for or against the public interest (Federal Trade Commission, 1984; Monopolies and Mergers Commission, 1970, 1976a and 1976b; Department of Trade and Industry, 1989; Courts and Legal Services Act, 1990). Ogus (1993) argues that âSelf-regulation has had a bad pressâ and that âmost of this criticism is well-founded in relation to some forms of self- regulationâ. Economists have been, traditionally, highly critical of many aspects of professional self-regulation.2 More recently, there has been a greater awareness of the informational asymmetry inherent in professional markets which demands some protection for the (infrequent) consumer of personal professional services (see, for example, Dingwall and Fenn (1987)). Commentators have identified three principal instruments of such selfregulators which work against the public interest: (1) restrictions on entry; (2) restrictions on fee competition; and (3) restrictions on advertising and other means of promoting a competitive process within the profession.
Kepler Observations of V447 Lyr: An Eclipsing U Gem Cataclysmic Variable
We present the results of an analysis of data covering 1.5 years of the dwarf
nova V447 Lyr. We detect eclipses of the accretion disk by the mass donating
secondary star every 3.74 hrs which is the binary orbital period. V447 Lyr is
therefore the first dwarf nova in the Kepler field to show eclipses. We also
detect five long outbursts and six short outbursts showing V447 Lyr is a U Gem
type dwarf nova. We show that the orbital phase of the mid-eclipse occurs
earlier during outbursts compared to quiescence and that the width of the
eclipse is greater during outburst. This suggests that the bright spot is more
prominent during quiescence and that the disk is larger during outburst than
quiescence. This is consistent with an expansion of the outer disk radius due
to the presence of high viscosity material associated with the outburst,
followed by a contraction in quiescence due to the accretion of low angular
momentum material. We note that the long outbursts appear to be triggered by a
short outburst, which is also observed in the super-outbursts of SU UMa dwarf
novae as observed using Kepler.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Behavioural and neurochemical consequences of chronic gut microbiota depletion during adulthood in the rat
Gut microbiota colonization is a key event for host physiology that occurs early in life. Disruption of this process leads to altered brain development which ultimately manifests as changes in brain function and behaviour in adulthood. Studies using germ-free mice highlight the extreme impact on brain health that results from life without commensal microbes, however the impact of microbiota disturbances occurring in adulthood is less studied. To this end, we depleted the gut microbiota of 10-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats via chronic antibiotic treatment. Following this marked, sustained depletion of the gut bacteria, we investigated behavioural and molecular hallmarks of gut-brain communication. Our results reveal that depletion of the gut microbiota during adulthood results in deficits in spatial memory as tested by Morris water maze, increased visceral sensitivity and a greater display of depressive-like behaviours in the forced swim test. In tandem with these clear behavioural alterations we found change in altered CNS serotonin concentration along with changes in the mRNA levels of corticotrophin releasing hormone receptor 1 and glucocorticoid receptor. Additionally, we found changes in the expression of BDNF, a hallmark of altered microbiota-gut-brain axis signaling. In summary, this model of antibiotic-induced depletion of the gut microbiota can be used for future studies interested in the impact of the gut microbiota on host health without the confounding developmental influence of early-life microbial alterations
On the application of a diffusive memristor compact model to neuromorphic circuits
Memristive devices have found application in both random access memory and neuromorphic circuits. In particular, it is known that their behavior resembles that of neuronal synapses. However, it is not simple to come by samples of memristors and adjusting their parameters to change their response requires a laborious fabrication process. Moreover, sample to sample variability makes experimentation with memristor-based synapses even harder. The usual alternatives are to either simulate or emulate the memristive systems under study. Both methodologies require the use of accurate modeling equations. In this paper, we present a diffusive compact model of memristive behavior that has already been experimentally validated. Furthermore, we implement an emulation architecture that enables us to freely explore the synapse-like characteristics of memristors. The main advantage of emulation over simulation is that the former allows us to work with real-world circuits. Our results can give some insight into the desirable characteristics of the memristors for neuromorphic applications
V344 Lyrae: A Touchstone SU UMa Cataclysmic Variable in the Kepler Field
We report on the analysis of the Kepler short-cadence (SC) light curve of
V344 Lyr obtained during 2009 June 20 through 2010 Mar 19 (Q2--Q4). The system
is an SU UMa star showing dwarf nova outbursts and superoutbursts, and promises
to be a touchstone for CV studies for the foreseeable future. The system
displays both positive and negative superhumps with periods of 2.20 and
2.06-hr, respectively, and we identify an orbital period of 2.11-hr. The
positive superhumps have a maximum amplitude of ~0.25-mag, the negative
superhumps a maximum amplitude of ~0.8 mag, and the orbital period at
quiescence has an amplitude of ~0.025 mag. The quality of the Kepler data is
such that we can test vigorously the models for accretion disk dynamics that
have been emerging in the past several years. The SC data for V344 Lyr are
consistent with the model that two physical sources yield positive superhumps:
early in the superoutburst, the superhump signal is generated by viscous
dissipation within the periodically flexing disk, but late in the
superoutburst, the signal is generated as the accretion stream bright spot
sweeps around the rim of the non-axisymmetric disk. The disk superhumps are
roughly anti-phased with the stream/late superhumps. The V344 Lyr data also
reveal negative superhumps arising from accretion onto a tilted disk precessing
in the retrograde direction, and suggest that negative superhumps may appear
during the decline of DN outbursts. The period of negative superhumps has a

Timescales of Massive Human Entrainment
The past two decades have seen an upsurge of interest in the collective
behaviors of complex systems composed of many agents entrained to each other
and to external events. In this paper, we extend concepts of entrainment to the
dynamics of human collective attention. We conducted a detailed investigation
of the unfolding of human entrainment - as expressed by the content and
patterns of hundreds of thousands of messages on Twitter - during the 2012 US
presidential debates. By time locking these data sources, we quantify the
impact of the unfolding debate on human attention. We show that collective
social behavior covaries second-by-second to the interactional dynamics of the
debates: A candidate speaking induces rapid increases in mentions of his name
on social media and decreases in mentions of the other candidate. Moreover,
interruptions by an interlocutor increase the attention received. We also
highlight a distinct time scale for the impact of salient moments in the
debate: Mentions in social media start within 5-10 seconds after the moment;
peak at approximately one minute; and slowly decay in a consistent fashion
across well-known events during the debates. Finally, we show that public
attention after an initial burst slowly decays through the course of the
debates. Thus we demonstrate that large-scale human entrainment may hold across
a number of distinct scales, in an exquisitely time-locked fashion. The methods
and results pave the way for careful study of the dynamics and mechanisms of

Massive migration from the steppe is a source for Indo-European languages in Europe
We generated genome-wide data from 69 Europeans who lived between 8,000-3,000
years ago by enriching ancient DNA libraries for a target set of almost four
hundred thousand polymorphisms. Enrichment of these positions decreases the
sequencing required for genome-wide ancient DNA analysis by a median of around
250-fold, allowing us to study an order of magnitude more individuals than
previous studies and to obtain new insights about the past. We show that the
populations of western and far eastern Europe followed opposite trajectories
between 8,000-5,000 years ago. At the beginning of the Neolithic period in
Europe, ~8,000-7,000 years ago, closely related groups of early farmers
appeared in Germany, Hungary, and Spain, different from indigenous
hunter-gatherers, whereas Russia was inhabited by a distinctive population of
hunter-gatherers with high affinity to a ~24,000 year old Siberian6 . By
~6,000-5,000 years ago, a resurgence of hunter-gatherer ancestry had occurred
throughout much of Europe, but in Russia, the Yamnaya steppe herders of this
time were descended not only from the preceding eastern European
hunter-gatherers, but from a population of Near Eastern ancestry. Western and
Eastern Europe came into contact ~4,500 years ago, as the Late Neolithic Corded
Ware people from Germany traced ~3/4 of their ancestry to the Yamnaya,
documenting a massive migration into the heartland of Europe from its eastern
periphery. This steppe ancestry persisted in all sampled central Europeans
until at least ~3,000 years ago, and is ubiquitous in present-day Europeans.
These results provide support for the theory of a steppe origin of at least
some of the Indo-European languages of Europe
Multiple unbiased approaches identify oxidosqualene cyclase as the molecular target of a promising anti-leishmanial
Phenotypic screening identified a benzothiophene compound with activity against Leishmania donovani, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. Using multiple orthogonal approaches, oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC), a key enzyme of sterol biosynthesis, was identified as the target of this racemic compound and its enantiomers. Whole genome sequencing and screening of a genome-wide overexpression library confirmed that OSC gene amplification is associated with resistance to compound 1. Introduction of an ectopic copy of the OSC gene into wild-type cells reduced susceptibility to these compounds confirming the role of this enzyme in resistance. Biochemical analyses demonstrated the accumulation of the substrate of OSC and depletion of its product in compound (S)-1-treated-promastigotes and cell-free membrane preparations, respectively. Thermal proteome profiling confirmed that compound (S)-1 binds directly to OSC. Finally, modeling and docking studies identified key interactions between compound (S)-1 and the LdOSC active site. Taking the Measure of the Universe: Precision Astrometry with SIM PlanetQuest
Precision astrometry at microarcsecond accuracy has application to a wide
range of astrophysical problems. This paper is a study of the science questions
that can be addressed using an instrument that delivers parallaxes at about 4
microarcsec on targets as faint as V = 20, differential accuracy of 0.6
microarcsec on bright targets, and with flexible scheduling. The science topics
are drawn primarily from the Team Key Projects, selected in 2000, for the Space
Interferometry Mission PlanetQuest (SIM PlanetQuest). We use the capabilities
of this mission to illustrate the importance of the next level of astrometric
precision in modern astrophysics. SIM PlanetQuest is currently in the detailed
design phase, having completed all of the enabling technologies needed for the
flight instrument in 2005. It will be the first space-based long baseline
Michelson interferometer designed for precision astrometry. SIM will contribute
strongly to many astronomical fields including stellar and galactic
astrophysics, planetary systems around nearby stars, and the study of quasar
and AGN nuclei. SIM will search for planets with masses as small as an Earth
orbiting in the `habitable zone' around the nearest stars using differential
astrometry, and could discover many dozen if Earth-like planets are common. It
will be the most capable instrument for detecting planets around young stars,
thereby providing insights into how planetary systems are born and how they
evolve with time. SIM will observe significant numbers of very high- and
low-mass stars, providing stellar masses to 1%, the accuracy needed to
challenge physical models. Using precision proper motion measurements, SIM will
probe the galactic mass distribution and the formation and evolution of the

Quality of intervention delivery in a cluster randomised controlled trial : a qualitative observational study with lessons for implementation fidelity
Abstract Background Understanding intervention fidelity is an essential part of the evaluation of complex interventions because fidelity not only affects the validity of trial findings, but also because studies of fidelity can be used to identify barriers and facilitators to successful implementation, and so provide important information about factors likely to impact the uptake of the intervention into clinical practice. Participant observation methods have been identified as being particularly valuable in studies of fidelity, yet are rarely used. This study aimed to use these methods to explore the quality of implementation of a complex intervention (Safewards) on mental health wards during a cluster randomised controlled trial. Specific aims were firstly to describe the different ways in which the intervention was implemented, and secondly to explore the contextual factors moderating the quality of intervention delivery, in order to inform âreal worldâ implementation of the intervention. Methods Safewards was implemented on 16 mental health wards in England. We used Research Assistants (RAs) trained in participant observation to record qualitative observational data on the quality of intervention delivery (nâ=â565 observations). At the end of the trial, two focus groups were conducted with RAs, which were used to develop the coding framework. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results There was substantial variation in intervention delivery between wards. We observed modifications to the intervention which were both fidelity consistent and inconsistent, and could enhance or dilute the intervention effects. We used these data to develop a typology which describes the different ways in which the intervention was delivered. This typology could be used as a tool to collect qualitative observational data about fidelity during trials. Moderators of Safewards implementation included systemic, interpersonal, and individual factors and patient responses to the intervention. Conclusions Our study demonstrates how, with appropriate training in participant observation, RAs can collect high-quality observational data about the quality of intervention delivery during a trial, giving a more complete picture of âfidelityâ than measurements of adherence alone.
