    Foreign investment, government expenditure, and economic growth in Malaysia

    This study uses the ordinary least squares technique to examine the effect of foreign investment and government expenditure on the growth in GDP per capita in Malaysia over the period 1978-2005. The regression results showed that the growth of export and ratio of government expenditure to GDP are the driving forces in enhancing the economic growth in Malaysia. Foreign investment and previous year real income per capita growth depict positive impact, whereas population growth exerts a negative impact on economic growth

    A case history of repair works of major road embankment failure along Genting Highlands to Bukit Cincin, Pahang is presented. Failures at 10 locations along Genting Highlands to Bukit Cincin road occurred on 30th October 1997 during the monsoon seasons. The repair works at Location 1 using reinforced earth wall was considered since there was enough space available at the downslope section and also the soil at the downslope section of the failed embankment was strong enough to construct the wall safely. This paper fully explained the details remedial works using reinforced earth wall at Location 1

    Banyak pihak yang membicarakan tentang masalah keruntuhan amalan agama dan kerosakan akhlak pelajar.Permasalahan ini sangat berkait rapat dengan usaha dakwah yang dilakukan bagi mengembalikan remaja kepada syariat dan akhlak Islamiah.Program dakwah perlu dilaksanakan secara aktif di institusi pendidikan bagi mencapai matlamat tersebut. Kajian ini bertujuan meninjau tentang tahap penglibatan program dakwah dalam kalangan pelajar anjuran Pusat Islam Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (POLIMAS).Dalam masa yang sama kajian ini mencari adakah wujud hubungan antara penglibatan program dakwah dengan amalan ibadat solat dan juga pengamalan akhlak pelajar.Populasi kajian seramai 5192 orang dan seramai 361 orang pelajar telah dipilih sebagai sampel kajian.Dua aspek utama yang menjadi objektif kajian iaitu tahap penglibatan pelajar ke dalam program dakwah tersebut dan hubungan dengan amalan ibadat solat dan pengamalan akhlak pelajar. Kaedah pengumpulan data dilakukan adalah melalui kaedah soal selidik dan dianalisis menggunakan perisian SPSS. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan penglibatan program dakwah dikalangan pelajar berada pada tahap yang sederhana tinggi. Seterusnya analisis kolerasi Pearson menunjukkan wujud hubungan yang positif antara penglibatan pelajar dalam program dakwah Pusat Islam POLIMAS dengan amalan ibadat solat pelajar dan pengamalan akhlak pelajar.Kajian ini memberi implikasi bahawa penglibatan dalam program dakwah dapat meningkatkan amalan ibadat solat dan akhlak pelajar

    Local economic benefits of ecotourism development in Malaysia: the case of Redang Island Marine Park

    This paper is an empirical study of the local economic benefits of ecotourism development in one of the marine parks in Malaysia. The Redang Island Marine Park (RIMP) was selected as a case study in order to estimate local economic benefits in terms of employment opportunities provided by the ecotourism sector and other related sectors. Sixteen ecotourism operators were interviewed to elicit financial information while 82 employees involved in the ecotourism sector were also interviewed in order to determine expenditure patterns. The results showed that the development of ecotourism in RIMP has definitely generated local employment opportunities. A total of 938 jobs were created which included direct, indirect and induced employment. The output multiplier was very small compared to the employment multipliers which were 1.104 and 1.223 respectively. The high percentage of leakages in the expenditures of ecotourism operators and their employees had contributed to the low multiplier effects

    A total of 45 locations of slope failures occurred along Jalan Baru Gap to Fraser Hill, Pahang. Of the 45 locations of slope failures, only 31 locations were repaired using soil nails. At each location, only one pull out test was carried out. This study involved the results of the pull out tests at all the 31 locations and the results were obtained from Public Works Department, K.L. The maximum pull out load during the test was 90 kN and the displacement at 90 kN load must be less than 10mm for the test to be considered satisfy the specifications. The main purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of the pull out test on soil nail and the interaction between the soil nail and the soil

    Cyanogenic Glycosides in Cassava

    Cassava is a well-known cyanogenic plant, which contains the cyanogenic glycosides linamarin and lotaustralin, the former being the principal cyanogenic glycoside. The ability to detect and quantify cyanogenic glycosides, capable of generating cyanide, could contribute to prevention of acute and subacute cyanide poisoning from the consumption of improperly processed plants. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) can be used to detect and measure the amount of linamarin directly within the fresh cassava or cassava-related products with minimal sample preparation using antibodies as the key detector. However, there has been no antibody and ELISA developed for linamarin detection in foods, hence the need. The aim of the project was to generate polyclonal antibodies (pAbs) obtained by immunizing two New Zealand white rabbits with linamarin (hapten) conjugated to a carrier protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA) using cyanuric chloride as chemical linker to be used with the ELISA. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) development was attempted by immunizing four BALB/c mice with linamarin-CC-KLH and 3 BALB/c mice with linamarin-CC-BSA but failed to produce the desired antibodies. PAbs generated by both immunised rabbits were highly immunoreactive with antiserum titre of 1:100,000. The pAbs were able to establish positive inhibition assay towards free linamarin with high specificity and sensitivity (limit of detection of 0.0015 µg/ml and IC50 of 2.1 µg/ml). The optimised ELISA was able to determine the amount of linamarin in fresh cassava and processed products available in the UK market, ranging from 0.003 mg/kg to 43.08 mg/kg fresh and dry weight depending on the products. Levels of linamarin of some fresh cassava products are way beyond the safe limit of 10 mg/kg cyanide allowed in food, a potential health risk to consumers. In contrast, highly processed cassava products contained less than 1.0 mg/kg of linamarin, indicating the effectiveness of proper food processing and preparation in reducing the linamarin content in foods

    Electric Field Analysis of HDPE/NR Biocomposite Due to Moisture Content Condition

    It is critical to develop new insulating materials that can improve the performance of next-generation high-voltage cables used in the construction of future electrical networks. The high electric field reduces solid insulation resistance and causes partial discharge through imperfections in a dielectric, causing the dielectric to age and eventually fail. Moisture is one of the most serious factors the effect the high voltage insulation status of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) composites. The main goal of this project is to investigate the electric field intensity of HDPE due to moisture content condition when mixed with 10g, 20g, and 30g of various bio-fillers such as coconut coir fibre, pineapple leaves fibre, and oil palm empty fruit bunch. This can be accomplished by using the Finite Element Method Magnetics (FEMM) 4.2 software to create a two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric electrostatic model. When compared to unfilled HDPE, the inclusion of bio-filler in HDPE increased the maximum electric field intensity due to moisture content condition. The intensity of the electric field varied with the different percentages of biocomposite loading and their permittivity due to moisture content condition. The results showed, due to moisture content condition, the maximum electric field intensity was significantly lower when HDPE was added with a 10% loading of the oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB). As a result, EFB bio-filler was the best composition because it tends to improve dielectric properties by having a lower maximum electric field intensity which is 4.214Mv/m due to moisture content condition at the top sphere electrode when compared to other compositions

    The move toward better public governance exacerbates the conditions leading to instances of whistle-blowing. The initial prediction of this paper was ethical failure is the ground reason for organizational collapse. This paper provides an analysis of ethical reasoning as an indicator to whistle-blowing intention in Public Sector. The study uses data from questionnaire received from 242 respondents of public agencies in Klang valley for the year 2013. Of greatest importance is the finding that ethical reasoning strongly influences whistle-blowing intention among public servants due to the inherent ethical standing of the individual. Our final analysis calls for the need to refine this research by enumerating the role of culture as a moderating variable in future research

    Hubungan di antara amalan pembuatan mampan dan prestasi mampan dalam sektor pembuatan

    Pelaksanaan amalan pembuatan mampan telah membawa banyak keuntungan dan manfaat bukan sahaja kepada industri pembuatan itu sendiri malah kepada persekitaran. Antara manfaat tersebut ialah meningkatkan produktiviti, membawa imej yang baik, menghasilkan produk mesra alam. Walaubagaimanapun, masih terdapat banyak organisasi pembuatan yang masih tidak melaksanakan amalan pembuatan mampan oleh faktor kos yang tinggi dan budaya organisasi yang tidak menerima amalan tersebut. Justeru, kajian ini bertujuan mengenalpasti hubungan di antara amalan pembuatan mampan (SMP) dan prestasi mampan organisasi pembuatan. Data dikumpulkan berdasarkan kaedah kuantitatif dengan menggunakan borang soal selidik. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah persampelan rawak mudah dan SPSS digunakan untuk menganalisis data deskriptif dan korelasi. Sampel sebanyak 51 syarikat pembuatan di Johor digunakan untuk analisis bagi kajian yang akan dijalankan. Amalan pengeluaran bersih dan hubungan pekerja menunjukkan hubungan yang signifikan dengan prestasi mampan. Amalan eko efisiensi menunjukkan tiada hubungan terhadap kemampanan ekonomi, namun terdapat hubungan yang signifikan terhadap kemampanan persekitaran dan kemampanan sosial. Faedah daripada kajian ini ialah organisasi pembuatan dapat melihat beberapa SMP yang bertindak sebagai pemacu untuk meningkatkan prestasi mampan organisasi kerana manfaat jangka panjang yang ditawarkannya
