    Cihampelas Walk (Ci-walk) in Bandung, Indonesia's first open mall operation began in 2003 and stands on 3.5 hectares. According to the layout of the space created in the context of the discussion of the form and order of the mass that occurs views of land use on land is wide awake ± 11,700 m² while the wide open spaces is ± 23,300 m². Mass and space patterns presented by Ci-walk area is Organic Patterns.     Teknologi perajangan bawang merah untuk pembuatan bawang goreng dan bumbu lainya yang berbahan dasar bawang hingga saat ini yang dilakukan oleh kebanyakan masyarakat Indonesia masih banyak menggunakan cara manual dengan masih menggunakan alat perajangan tenaga manusia. Hal ini terdapat beberapa kendala dalam proses perajangannya, diantaranya waktu perajangan yang cukup lama. Berdasarkan latar belakang tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan membuat mesin perajang bawang merah dengan tebal produk 1-2 mm dengan kapasitas 1 kg/menit. Penelitian dengan metode ekperimetal ini dimulai dengan proses pengumpulan data, diantaranya survei kepada masyarakat dan studi pustaka. Proses selanjutnya perancangan produk, pembuatan komponen, perakitan dan ujicoba pemotongan bawang. Setelah dilakukan beberapa perbaikan proses uji coba yang dilakukan menggunakan mesin perajang bawang, diperoleh hasil perajangan rata-rata tercapai dengan ketebalan antara 1-2 mm, dengan kapasitas produksi berkisar 1 Kg/menit

    Early detection of poor glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus in sub-Saharan Africa: a cohort study in Mozambique

    Introduction: WHO estimates 422 million cases of diabetes mellitus worldwide. Mozambique has the second-highest mortality related to DM in the African region. Objectives of the present study are to provide data about a DM care service in Mozambique and to evaluate early outcomes of treatment. Methods: The new patients diagnosed with DM in a two-years period in a health centre in Maputo (Mozambique) were included in a retrospective cohort study. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), waist circumference (WC) and BMI were collected at baseline and after three months. Results: 188 patients were enrolled. Median BMI, WC and FBG at baseline were respectively 28 kg/m2(Inter Quartile Range [IQR]23.4-31.8), 98cm (IQR 87-105) and 209mg/dL (IQR 143-295). A non-pharmacological intervention was prescribed for six patients, while 182 patients received metformin 500 mg b.i.d. FBG was significantly reduced at control (226[±103.7]mg/dL vs 186[±93.2]mg/dL, p<0.000); however, glycemic control was reached in 74 patients (39.4%); not controlled patients changed regimen. Elderly patients had a higher glycemic control (adjusted Odds Ratio 2.50, 95% CI 1.11-5.06, p=0.002). Conclusion: Strategies for early detection of scarce glycemic control are feasible in Mozambique and could lead to prompt regimen switch; an invasive therapeutic approach could be preferable in selected cases to achieve control

    Adaptations in a hierarchical food web of southeastern Lake Michigan

    Two issues in ecological network theory are: (1) how to construct an ecological network model and (2) how do entire networks (as opposed to individual species) adapt to changing conditions? We present a novel method for constructing an ecological network model for the food web of southeastern Lake Michigan (USA) and we identify changes in key system properties that are large relative to their uncertainty as this ecological network adapts fromone time point to a second time point in response to multiple perturbations. To construct our foodweb for southeastern Lake Michigan,we followed the list of seven recommendations outlined in Cohen et al. [Cohen, J.E., et al., 1993.Improving foodwebs. Ecology 74, 252–258] for improving food webs. We explored two inter-related extensions of hierarchical system theory with our food web; the first one was that subsystems react to perturbations independently in the short-term and the second onewas that a system’s properties change at a slower rate than its subsystems’ properties. We used Shannon’s equations to provide quantitative versions of the basic food web properties: number of prey, number of predators, number of feeding links, and connectance (or density).We then compared these properties between the two time-periods by developing distributions of each property for each time period that took uncertainty about the property into account.We compared these distributions, and concluded that non-overlapping distributions indicated changes in these properties that were large relative to their uncertainty. Two subsystems were identified within our food web system structure (p \u3c 0.001). One subsystem had more non-overlapping distributions in food web properties between Time 1 and Time 2 than the other subsystem. The overall system had all overlapping distributions in food web properties between Time 1 and Time 2. These results supported both extensions of hierarchical systems theory. Interestingly, the subsystemwithmore non-overlapping distributions in foodweb propertieswas the subsystemthat contained primarily benthic taxa, contrary to expectations that the identifiedmajor perturbations (lower phosphorous inputs and invasive species) would more greatly affect the subsystem containing primarily pelagic taxa. Future food-web research shouldemploy rigorous statistical analysis and incorporate uncertainty in food web properties for a better understanding of how ecological networks adapt

    In vivo biocompatibility assessment of (PTFE–PVDF–PP) terpolymer-based membrane with potential application for glaucoma treatment

    The aim of the work was to evaluate the in vivo biological behaviour of polymeric membrane materials for glaucoma implants. The base material was biostable synthetic terpolymer (PTFE–PVDF–PP) with proved biocompability (PN-EN ISO 10993). The samples manufactured in the form a membrane were subjected to chemical and physical treatment to create an open pore system within the polymer matrix. As a porogenic phase biodegradable natrium alginate in a fibrous form was employed. The non-perforating deep sclerectomy technique was performed in a rabbit model. The clinical observations were made after 14 and 30 days. During the study clinical symptoms of a moderate degree were observed, and histopathological changes were typical for foreign body implantation. At the end stage of the study no significant difference in histopathological assessment was found between control and experimental group. Similarities observed in both groups and relatively mild histopathological changes in the tissue surrounding the implant indicate that the observed symptoms come from a deep scleral trauma caused by surgery, and not by the presence of the implant itself

    A Latent Pro-survival Function for the Mir-290-295 Cluster in Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) post-transcriptionally regulate the expression of thousands of distinct mRNAs. While some regulatory interactions help to maintain basal cellular functions, others are likely relevant in more specific settings, such as response to stress. Here we describe such a role for the mir-290-295 cluster, the dominant miRNA cluster in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). Examination of a target list generated from bioinformatic prediction, as well as expression data following miRNA loss, revealed strong enrichment for apoptotic regulators, two of which we validated directly: Caspase 2, the most highly conserved mammalian caspase, and Ei24, a p53 transcriptional target. Consistent with these predictions, mESCs lacking miRNAs were more likely to initiate apoptosis following genotoxic exposure to gamma irradiation or doxorubicin. Knockdown of either candidate partially rescued this pro-apoptotic phenotype, as did transfection of members of the mir-290-295 cluster. These findings were recapitulated in a specific mir-290-295 deletion line, confirming that they reflect miRNA functions at physiological levels. In contrast to the basal regulatory roles previously identified, the pro-survival phenotype shown here may be most relevant to stressful gestations, where pro-oxidant metabolic states induce DNA damage.     Ribosomal scanning on the 5′-untranslated region of the human immunodeficiency virus RNA genome

    Translation initiation on most eukaryotic mRNAs occurs via a cap-dependent scanning mechanism and its efficiency is modulated by their 5′-untranslated regions (5′-UTR). The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) 5′-UTR contains a stable TAR hairpin directly at its 5′-end, which possibly masks the cap structure. In addition, the 5′-UTR is relatively long and contains several stable RNA structures that are essential for viral replication. These characteristics may interfere with ribosomal scanning and suggest that translation is initiated via internal entry of ribosomes. Literature on the HIV-1 5′-UTR-driven translation initiation mechanism is controversial. Both scanning and internal initiation have been shown to occur in various experimental systems. To gain further insight in the translation initiation process, we determined which part of the 5′-UTR is scanned. To do so, we introduced upstream AUGs at various positions across the 5′-UTR and determined the effect on expression of a downstream reporter gene that was placed under control of the gag start codon.
