    Lattice Instability and Competing Spin Structures in the Double Perovskite Insulator Sr2FeOsO6

    The semiconductor Sr2FeOsO6, depending on temperature, adopts two types of spin structures that differ in the spin sequence of ferrimagnetic iron - osmium layers along the tetragonal c-axis. Neutron powder diffraction experiments, 57Fe M\"ossbauer spectra, and density-functional theory calculations suggest that this behavior arises because a lattice instability resulting in alternating iron-osmium distances fine-tunes the balance of competing exchange interactions. Thus, Sr2FeOsO6 is an example for a double perovskite, in which the electronic phases are controlled by the interplay of spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom.Comment: 8 Pages, 3 Figure

    Chemoreception and neuroplasticity in respiratory circuits

    The respiratory central pattern generator must respond to chemosensory cues to maintain oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) homeostasis in the blood and tissues. To do this, sensorial cells located in the periphery and central nervous system monitor the arterial partial pressure of O2 and CO2 and initiate respiratory and autonomic reflex adjustments in conditions of hypoxia and hypercapnia. In conditions of chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), repeated peripheral chemoreceptor input mediated by the nucleus of the solitary tract induces plastic changes in respiratory circuits that alter baseline respiratory and sympathetic motor outputs and result in chemoreflex sensitization, active expiration, and arterial hypertension. Herein, we explored the hypothesis that the CIH-induced neuroplasticity primarily consists of increased excitability of pre-inspiratory/inspiratory neurons in the pre-Bötzinger complex. To evaluate this hypothesis and elucidate neural mechanisms for the emergence of active expiration and sympathetic overactivity in CIH-treated animals, we extended a previously developed computational model of the brainstem respiratory-sympathetic network to reproduce experimental data on peripheral and central chemoreflexes post-CIH. The model incorporated neuronal connections between the 2nd-order NTS neurons and peripheral chemoreceptors afferents, the respiratory pattern generator, and sympathetic neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla in order to capture key features of sympathetic and respiratory responses to peripheral chemoreflex stimulation. Our model identifies the potential neuronal groups recruited during peripheral chemoreflex stimulation that may be required for the development of inspiratory, expiratory and sympathetic reflex responses. Moreover, our model predicts that pre-inspiratory neurons in the pre-Bötzinger complex experience plasticity of channel expression due to excessive excitation during peripheral chemoreflex. Simulations also show that, due to positive interactions between pre-inspiratory neurons in the pre-Bötzinger complex and expiratory neurons in the retrotrapezoid nucleus, increased excitability of the former may lead to the emergence of the active expiratory pattern at normal CO2 levels found after CIH exposure. We conclude that neuronal type specific neuroplasticity in the pre-Bötzinger complex induced by repetitive episodes of peripheral chemoreceptor activation by hypoxia may contribute to the development of sympathetic over-activity and hypertension

    Transmission of HIV-1 infection in sub-Saharan Africa and effect of elimination of unsafe injections

    During the past year, a group has argued that unsafe injections are a major if not the main mode of HIV-1 transmission\ud in sub-Saharan Africa. We review the main arguments used to question the epidemiological interpretations on the lead\ud role of unsafe sex in HIV-1 transmission, and conclude there is no compelling evidence that unsafe injections are a\ud predominant mode of HIV-1 transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. Conversely, though there is a clear need to eliminate\ud all unsafe injections, epidemiological evidence indicates that sexual transmission continues to be by far the major\ud mode of spread of HIV-1 in the region.     A fossil lizard (Iguanoidea) from the upper Pliocene of northwestern Argentina

    The Uquia Formation (middle Pliocene-lower Pleistocene) crops out in Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy Province, northwestern Argentina) and contains an important record of fossil vertebrates that documents the event known as the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). We present a new fossil lizard from San Roque locality, near Humahuaca town, recovered in levels referred to late Pliocene. The material consists of one premaxilla, one maxilla, and several dentaries bearing teeth belonging to at least three individuals. The remains were part of a microvertebrate fossil assemblage that also includes amphibians, birds, rodents, and marsupials. Corrosion signals on the enamel of rodent teeth indicate that this assemblage was formed by the trophic activities of predatory birds. The phylogenetic analysis performed with 396 morphological characters places this new lizard as the sister taxon of a clade composed by Liolaemidae, Leiocephalidae, and Tropiduridae. Its uncertain position and substantial morphological differences justify its placement in a new genus. The results of this analysis support the monophyletic status of Iguanoidea and support other groups within Iguania. This is the first record of a Squamata for the Uquia Formation levels, which mainly contain medium to large sized mammals.     Prediction models for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales carriage at liver transplantation: A multicenter retrospective study

    Background: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) colonisation at liver transplantation (LT) increases the risk of CRE infection after LT, which impacts on recipients’ survival. Colonization status usually becomes evident only near LT. Thus, predictive models can be useful to guide antibiotic prophylaxis in endemic centres. Aims: This study aimed to identify risk factors for CRE colonisation at LT in order to build a predictive model. Methods: Retrospective multicentre study including consecutive adult patients who underwent LT, from 2010 to 2019, at two large teaching hospitals. We excluded patients who had CRE infections within 90 days before LT. CRE screening was performed in all patients on the day of LT. Exposure variables were considered within 90 days before LT and included cirrhosis complications, underlying disease, time on the waiting list, MELD and CLIF-SOFA scores, antibiotic use, intensive care unit and hospital stay, and infections. A machine learning model was trained to detect the probability of a patient being colonized with CRE at LT. Results: A total of 1544 patients were analyzed, 116 (7.5%) patients were colonized by CRE at LT. The median time from CRE isolation to LT was 5 days. Use of antibiotics, hepato-renal syndrome, worst CLIF sofa score, and use of beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor increased the probability of a patient having pre-LT CRE. The proposed algorithm had a sensitivity of 66% and a specificity of 83% with a negative predictive value of 97%.     Screening of Strongyloides infection using an ELISA test in transplant candidates

    OBJECTIVES: Hyperinfection or disseminated strongyloidiasis has been frequently reported after transplants and is related to high mortality. This study aimed to screen for strongyloidiasis using serological diagnoses in transplant candidates. METHODS: An ELISA test was performed with filariform larvae of Strongyloides venezuelensis as a source of antigen. RESULTS: In the serum from transplant candidates, anti-Strongyloides IgG antibodies were detected in 35/150 (23.3%) samples by soluble fractions in phosphate buffered saline (PBS), 31/150 (20.7%) samples by soluble fractions in Tris-HCl, 27/150 (18.0%) samples by membrane fractions in PBS and 22/150 (14.7%) samples by membrane fractions in Tris-HCl. CONCLUSIONS: The present results suggest the ELISA test, ideally using soluble fractions of filariform larvae S. venezuelensis in PBS, as an additional strategy for the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis in transplant candidates
