Europe: a market for the consulting industry

    Get PDF
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThe work project analyses the evolution of the European consulting industry during the last decade. Key findings are compared with past studies comprising the evolution of the market from the 1960’s to the 1990’s in order to assess the validity of two expected trends: evolution in a convergent path (homogenization hypothesis) and dominance of American companies (Americanization hypothesis). The conclusions from this study contradict the homogenization hypothesis, characterizing Europe as a continent of diversity. While the Americanization hypothesis seems plausible, European consultancies remain relevant players. A new discussion topic arises: is Europe replicating the Americanization phenomenon (Europeanization hypothesis)

Disruption in higher education - a new approach proposal based on collaborative blended mobile learning

    Get PDF
The emergence of new technologies contributes to the change in the behavior of society in general and the younger generation, named Generation Z, in particular requires that higher education institutions “look” for teaching in a different way and change the approaches (methodologies) of the teaching learning process. Since the current approach to teaching learning process in higher education is predominantly the traditional model, i.e. expository lectures. Thus, teachers who a collaborative blended mobile learning are stimulating students autonomy and motivation, so that students get more skills. In order to answer these new challenges an innovative approach was developed and implemented. The approach was implemented in a post-graduation course untitled “Web Communication”. The results are very promising because they allow on the one hand student’s engagement, and on the other hand, resulted in a 80% pass rate

Companies’ competitiveness depends on, among other elements, an increasing use of information and communications technologies. However, in Europe implementation solutions of e-commerce are still at a very early stage. Based on some existent studies, this article presents a comparative analysis on the use of electronic commerce in European companies. The research question to be solved concern factors that influence the adoption of electronic commerce. Given the controversial results among the different countries and the relevant factors that influence the adoption of eCommerce some questions have arisen: The different patterns of eCommerce adoption and its usage in Europe; the influence of national culture on the adoption of eCommerce; If the factors affecting the adoption of eCommerce match the ones behind the adoption of any form of ICT

Spatial and temporal variations of Cockle (Cerastoderma spp.) populations in two portuguese estuarine systems with low directed fishing pressure

Cockles are amongst the most exploited bivalve species in Portugal, playing an important ecological and socioeconomic role in coastal ecosystems. Two sympatric species of cockles, Cerastoderma edule (Linnaeus, 1758) and Cerastoderma glaucum (Bruguiere, 1789-1792) may co-occur in estuaries and coastal lagoons in mixed populations along the European Atlantic coast, namely in Portugal, France and the United Kingdom. The increasing importance of shellfish harvesting in Portugal requires a good knowledge of cockle stocks and temporal variability in stock levels to better inform sustainable management practices. Therefore, this study aimed at assessing spatial and temporal variations in cockle populations in two Portuguese estuarine systems where the species are exploited at low levels. Sampling was carried out using a clam dredge, covering the entire potential area of occurrence of cockles in the Tagus and Sado estuaries at around the same time of the year in each of the three sampling years (2015, 2018, and 2019). The abundance, spatial distribution and population structure of cockles were examined at each system. Moreover, several water and sediment parameters were measured to understand the influence of environmental conditions on the spatial distribution and abundance of cockles. The results obtained showed that cockles occur mostly in the intermediate areas of both estuarine systems and are more abundant in the Tagus estuary. Depth, average sediment grain size and the species Ruditapes philippinarum were the factors that better explained the probability of species occurrence. The population structure analysis indicated that natural mortality is constraining the cockle communities given the low abundance of adult individuals with marketable size in both estuaries. This study highlights the need for appropriate management measures to ensure the sustainability of these bivalve population stocks that have significant socioeconomic importance for local populations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This study aimed to evaluate the use of hydrogel in the survival of cuttings of Eucalyptus urograndis produced with different types of substrate and water management. The experiment was carried out using cuttings of the same clone, produced up to 50 days after the cutting, in two different nurseries (“C” and “E"). Then, all the cuttings were allocated to the same nursery for 80 days, where they received irrigation at different frequencies. After this period, the cuttings were transplanted into polyethylene pots, in clay soil, with and without hydrogel. The results obtained were subjected to the variance technique for totally randomized experiments. Data analysis revealed that the plants with hydrogel displayed delayed symptoms of water deficit. Regardless of the cutting's origin (“C” or “E”), the hydrogel influenced survival, guaranteeing 37 days without additional irrigation. The nursery water management only influenced the plants from nursery "E", and the plants adapted to the lack of water (water management with one daily irrigation) took more time to present symptoms of water deficit.

Effect of glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists on cardiovascular events in overweight or obese adults without diabetes: A meta‐analysis of placebo‐controlled randomized trials

    No full text
International audienceOur aim was to study the effect of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) on the risk of any cardiovascular event in adults with overweight or obesity and without diabetes. We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis of placebo-controlled randomized controlled trials. Nine trials were eligible and, in total, 11 430 patients were included, of which 7702 (67%) were submitted to treatment with GLP-1 RA. During follow-up, 673 participants receiving GLP-1 RA treatment (8.7%) and 416 participants receiving placebo (11.2%) had a cardiovascular event. Treatment with GLP-1 RA versus placebo resulted in a reduction in the risk of any cardiovascular event (RR = 0.81, CI 0.70-0.92; p = .001). In overweight or obese adults without diabetes, treatment with GLP-1 RA reduced the risk of cardiovascular events. Our findings support the use of GLP-1 RA for reducing the cardiovascular risk of these patients
