Dynamic manipulation of mechanical resonators in the high amplitude regime through optical backaction
Cavity optomechanics enables active manipulation of mechanical resonators
through backaction cooling and amplification. This ability to control
mechanical motion with retarded optical forces has recently spurred a race
towards realizing a mechanical resonator in its quantum ground state. Here,
instead of quenching optomechanical motion, we demonstrate high amplitude
operation of nanomechanical resonators by utilizing a highly efficient phonon
generation process. In this regime, the nanomechanical resonators gain
sufficient energy from the optical field to overcome the large energy barrier
of a double well potential, leading to nanomechanical slow-down and zero
frequency singularity, as predicted by early theories . Besides fundamental
studies and interests in parametric amplification of small forces,
optomechanical backaction is also projected to open new windows for studying
discrete mechanical states, and to foster applications. Here we realize a
non-volatile mechanical memory element, in which bits are written and reset via
optomechanical backaction by controlling the mechanical damping across the
barrier. Our study casts a new perspective on the energy dynamics in coupled
mechanical resonator - cavity systems and enables novel functional devices that
utilize the principles of cavity optomechanics.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
New Strategies in Modeling Electronic Structures and Properties with Applications to Actinides
This chapter discusses contemporary quantum chemical methods and provides
general insights into modern electronic structure theory with a focus on
heavy-element-containing compounds. We first give a short overview of
relativistic Hamiltonians that are frequently applied to account for
relativistic effects. Then, we scrutinize various quantum chemistry methods
that approximate the -electron wave function. In this respect, we will
review the most popular single- and multi-reference approaches that have been
developed to model the multi-reference nature of heavy element compounds and
their ground- and excited-state electronic structures. Specifically, we
introduce various flavors of post-Hartree--Fock methods and optimization
schemes like the complete active space self-consistent field method, the
configuration interaction approach, the Fock-space coupled cluster model, the
pair-coupled cluster doubles ansatz, also known as the antisymmetric product of
1 reference orbital geminal, and the density matrix renormalization group
algorithm. Furthermore, we will illustrate how concepts of quantum information
theory provide us with a qualitative understanding of complex electronic
structures using the picture of interacting orbitals. While modern quantum
chemistry facilitates a quantitative description of atoms and molecules as well
as their properties, concepts of quantum information theory offer new
strategies for a qualitative interpretation that can shed new light onto the

Northern Eurasia Future Initiative (NEFI): facing the challenges and pathways of global change in the 21st century
During the past several decades, the Earth system has changed significantly, especially across Northern Eurasia. Changes in the socio-economic conditions of the larger countries in the region have also resulted in a variety of regional environmental changes that can
have global consequences. The Northern Eurasia Future Initiative (NEFI) has been designed as an essential continuation of the Northern Eurasia Earth Science
Partnership Initiative (NEESPI), which was launched in 2004. NEESPI sought to elucidate all aspects of ongoing environmental change, to inform societies and, thus, to
better prepare societies for future developments. A key principle of NEFI is that these developments must now be secured through science-based strategies co-designed
with regional decision makers to lead their societies to prosperity in the face of environmental and institutional challenges. NEESPI scientific research, data, and
models have created a solid knowledge base to support the NEFI program. This paper presents the NEFI research vision consensus based on that knowledge. It provides the reader with samples of recent accomplishments in regional studies and formulates new NEFI science questions. To address these questions, nine research foci are identified and their selections are briefly justified. These foci include: warming of the Arctic; changing frequency, pattern, and intensity of extreme and inclement environmental conditions; retreat of the cryosphere; changes in terrestrial water cycles; changes in the biosphere; pressures on land-use; changes in infrastructure; societal actions in response to environmental change; and quantification of Northern Eurasia's role in the global Earth system. Powerful feedbacks between the Earth and human systems in Northern Eurasia (e.g., mega-fires, droughts, depletion of the cryosphere essential for water supply, retreat of sea ice) result from past and current human activities (e.g., large scale water withdrawals, land use and governance change) and
potentially restrict or provide new opportunities for future human activities. Therefore, we propose that Integrated Assessment Models are needed as the final stage of global
change assessment. The overarching goal of this NEFI modeling effort will enable evaluation of economic decisions in response to changing environmental conditions and justification of mitigation and adaptation efforts
Duplication and Retention Biases of Essential and Non-Essential Genes Revealed by Systematic Knockdown Analyses
When a duplicate gene has no apparent loss-of-function phenotype, it is commonly considered that the phenotype has been masked as a result of functional redundancy with the remaining paralog. This is supported by indirect evidence showing that multi-copy genes show loss-of-function phenotypes less often than single-copy genes and by direct tests of phenotype masking using select gene sets. Here we take a systematic genome-wide RNA interference approach to assess phenotype masking in paralog pairs in the Caenorhabditis elegans genome. Remarkably, in contrast to expectations, we find that phenotype masking makes only a minor contribution to the low knockdown phenotype rate for duplicate genes. Instead, we find that non-essential genes are highly over-represented among duplicates, leading to a low observed loss-of-function phenotype rate. We further find that duplicate pairs derived from essential and non-essential genes have contrasting evolutionary dynamics: whereas non-essential genes are both more often successfully duplicated (fixed) and lost, essential genes are less often duplicated but upon successful duplication are maintained over longer periods. Methods: Excerption of the availability literature, processing the regional newspapers that were obtained from the Town library in Prostějov and Town archive in Prostějov, the questionnaires, the materials of the district corporation of the pharmacists and interviews with the local pharmacy keepers. Results: Before 1989 in the Prostějov Region there were 12 pharmacies, 6 in the region and 6 in the city of Prostějov. After the 1989 many new pharmacies were established. Some pharmacies have established the OOVL (a small pharmacy by their "mother pharmacy"), their expansion have begun after the 1998. In the city of Prostějov we can find the pharmacies in the supermarkets too. Some historical pharmacies and some new have disappeared because of their competition. In..
