    Effect of wood aging on wine mineral composition and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio

    The evolution of mineral composition and wine strontium isotopic ratio 87Sr/86Sr (Sr IR) during wood aging were investigated. A red wine was aged in stainless steel tanks with French oak staves (Quercus sessiliflora Salisb.), with three industrial scale replicates. Sampling was carried out after 30, 60, and 90 days of aging, and the wines were evaluated in terms of general analysis, phenolic composition, total polysaccharides, multielement composition, and Sr IR. Li, Be, Mg, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Mo, Sb, Cs, Ba, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Lu, Tl, and Pb elements and 87Sr/86Sr were determined by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS) and Na, K, Ca, and Fe by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Two-way ANOVA was applied to assess wood aging and time effect on Sr IR and mineral composition. Wood aging resulted in significantly higher concentrations of Mg, V, Co, Ni, and Sr. At the end of the aging period, wine exhibited statistically identical Sr IR compared to control.     Effect Of Post Type And Restorative Techniques On The Strain And Fracture Resistance Of Flared Incisor Roots

    Restoring flared endodontically treated teeth continues to be a challenge for clinicians. This study evaluated the effect of post types and restorative techniques on the strain, fracture resistance, and fracture mode of incisors with weakened roots. One hundred five endodontically treated bovine incisors roots (15 mm) were divided into 7 groups (n=15). The two control groups were (C) intact roots restored with Cpc (cast posts and core) or Gfp (glass fiber posts). The five experimental groups were (F) flared roots restored with GfpAp (Gfp associated with accessory glass fiber posts), GfpRc (anatomic Gfp, relined with composite resin), and GfpRcAp (anatomized Gfp with resin and accessory glass fiber posts). All teeth were restored with metal crowns. Mechanical fatigue was performed with 3x10 5/50 N. Specimens were loaded at 45°, and the strain values (ÎŒS) were obtained on root buccal and proximal surfaces. Following that, the fracture resistance (N) was measured. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD tests (α=0.05) were applied, and failure mode was checked. No significant difference in strain values among the groups was found. Cpc presented lower fracture resistance and more catastrophic failures in flared roots.     Preliminary study on the contribution of external forces to ship behavior

    Computational modeling has become a prominent tool to simulate physical processes for research and development projects. The coastal region of southern Brazil is very susceptible to oil spill accidents. Currently, oil is intensively transported in the region due to the presence of the Rio Grande Harbor, the TranspetroWaterway Terminal (Petrobras) and the Riograndense S/A Oil Refinery. Therefore, simulations under ideal navigation conditions for ships with potentially polluting loads are important because their use can reduce oil spills and toxic compound accidents in the environment. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to present a preliminary study of the contribution of external forces to a ship's behavior over a simulation period of 5 h. The methodology is based on the development of a numerical model using LaGrangian formalism and the calculus of variations, besides Maneuvering Modeling Group (MMG Model). The external forces considered were the wind acting directly on the ship, waves driven by wind, the rudder, the force acting on the hull, inertial forces, and seawater density. The results indicate that at the beginning of the simulation, the inertial forces were of primary importance for controlling the trajectory of the ship. After 5 h of simulations, the ship had completely changed its trajectory due to forces suffered by the ship, classified according to MMG Model

    Preparations for field testing for the performance validation of piled wind turbine foundations in expansive clays

    Field-testing of piles in an expansive clay is required for the validation of the design criteria for wind turbine foundations in such soil profiles. The test programme includes lateral load tests to investigate the horizontal stiffness of the soil and vertical plug pull-out tests to examine the axial capacity of pile-soil interface. These tests will be conducted in both dry and wet conditions to study the range of expected responses of the pile and evaluate how the changing soil moisture condition affects the pile behaviour. In addition, an instrumented pile socketed into bedrock will be used to determine the strain induced in the pile due to soil heave as the soil saturation levels increase. For the execution of these tests, a large open area with expansive clay of a sufficient depth is required; a stable stratum below the clay is desirable for the socketing of the long piles. An important component of the investigation is the characterisation of the expansive clay profile. A preliminary site investigation has been carried out on the field-testing site which will be supported by further laboratory testing. Details of the soil profile and site characterisation which will be used in the future analyses of the fieldtesting results are presented

    The coffee harvest of the first crop can be benefited by the use of rubber extenders at the end of the stems. This because their malleable constitution acquires oscillatory motion increasing the stem contact area with the fruits. However, the coffee varieties have big morphological and physiological differences that can influence the mechanical harvesting. This study had a goal to test two of coffee harvesters (conventional and adapted to the harvest of the first crop plantations) in the absence and presence of rubber extenders in two cultivars (Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 and Tupi IAC 1669-33). The design was randomized blocks in five plants per plot. Evaluated the amount of fallen coffee, remaining harvested, picked and operational defoliation. The first crop coffee harvest should be made with harvester adapted to this situation.     Small Fermi energy and phonon anharmonicity in MgB_2 and related compounds

    The remarkable anharmonicity of the E_{2g} phonon in MgB_2 has been suggested in literature to play a primary role in its superconducting pairing. We investigate, by means of LDA calculations, the microscopic origin of such an anharmonicity in MgB_2, AlB_2, and in hole-doped graphite. We find that the anharmonic character of the E_{2g} phonon is essentially driven by the small Fermi energy of the sigma holes. We present a simple analytic model which allows us to understand in microscopic terms the role of the small Fermi energy and of the electronic structure.     A novel scytalidium species : understand the cellulolytic system for biomass saccharification

    In order to overcome the bottlenecks related to lignocellulosic-derived sugars, the search for more efficient enzymatic cocktails, containing a broad-spectrum of specific activities, relies on an important feature. This paper describes new enzyme activities derived from the novel strain of the Scytalidium genus isolated from the Amazonas rainforest. The production of the enzymatic cocktail was induced by delignifiedhydrothermal bagasse (DHB), and yeast extract was used to improve secretion activities, resulting in a positive influence on total cellulase activity. The enzymatic cocktail produced by this novel strain contains specific activities for biomass degradation, including FPAse, xylanase and ÎČ-glucosidase. Moreover, it is capable of hydrolyzing 62% of the alkaline pretreated bagasse, surpassing in 14% the hydrolytic capability achieved by the commercial cocktail Celluclast.     Environmental modification via a quorum sensing molecule influences the social landscape of siderophore production

    Bacteria produce a wide variety of exoproducts that favourably modify their environment and increase their fitness. These are often termed ‘public goods’ because they are costly for individuals to produce and can be exploited by non-producers (‘cheats’). The outcome of conflict over public goods is dependent upon the prevailing environment and the phenotype of the individuals in competition. Many bacterial species use quorum sensing (QS) signalling molecules to regulate the production of public goods. QS therefore determines the cooperative phenotype of individuals, and influences conflict over public goods. In addition to their regulatory functions, many QS molecules have additional properties that directly modify the prevailing environment. This leads to the possibility that QS molecules could influence conflict over public goods indirectly through non-signalling effects, and the impact of this on social competition has not previously been explored. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa QS signal molecule PQS is a powerful chelator of iron which can cause an iron starvation response. Here we show that PQS stimulates a concentration-dependent increase in the cooperative production of iron scavenging siderophores, resulting in an increase in the relative fitness of non-producing siderophore cheats. This is likely due to an increased cost of siderophore output by producing cells and a concurrent increase in the shared benefits, which accrue to both producers and cheats. Although PQS can be a beneficial signalling molecule for P. aeruginosa, our data suggests that it can also render a siderophore-producing population vulnerable to competition from cheating strains. More generally our results indicate that the production of one social trait can indirectly affect the costs and benefits of another social trait

    Drying and wetting soil-water retention behaviour of a highly expansive clay under varying initial density

    Expansive (or swelling) clays are the most prolific problem soil across Southern Africa and many parts of the world. Large volume changes due to seasonal wetting and drying cause millions of dollars’ worth of damage to engineering infrastructure yearly. Soil-water retention behaviour is dependent ondensity, and determining the correct retention curve may be key for reliable design of infrastructure. Soilwater retention curves and shrinkage curves were measured for recompacted samples of a highly expansive bentonite clay from South Africa. Four samples were prepared at varying initial dry densities between approximately 1200 and 1500 kg/m3 and subjected to total suction testing in a dewpoint hygrometer. The water content of each sample was varied through wetting and drying. The sample volume was measured after each suction reading, allowing relationships between suction and void ratio, degree of saturation and water content to be determined. The relationship between gravimetric water content and suction was not significantly influenced by initial density. Degree of saturation at a given suction varied significantly according to initial density. Volume reductions of 25% to 36% from saturated to residual conditions were recorded, and samples tended to a residual void ratio of 0.35 to 0.4. The swelling clay showed propensity for maintaining high suctions (over 300 MPa at residual conditions) and hysteretic response between primary drying and wetting
