    19F and 13C GIAO-NMR chemical shifts for the identification of perfluoro-quinoline and -isoquinoline derivatives

    Reaction of perfluoroquinoline 1 and perfluoroisoquinoline 2 with benzylamine gave mono- and di-aminated quinoline and isoquinoline systems, respectively, depending upon the reaction conditions by selective SNAr processes. Optimised model geometries of the aminated derivatives at MP2/6-31G* were in very good agreement with available X-ray crystallographic data and were used to compute 19F and 13C GIAO-NMR shifts. Comparison with observed 19F and 13C NMR shifts give excellent correlations, indicating that 19F and 13C GIAO-NMR computations are powerful tools in structurally identifying polyfunctional, polycyclic perfluoroheteroaromatic compounds and aiding NMR resonance assignment

    An experimental and computational approach to understanding the reactions of acyl nitroso compounds in [4+2]-cycloadditions

    Catalytic aerobic oxidation of phenyl hydroxycarbamate 1 and 1-hydroxy-3-phenylurea 2 using CuCl2 and 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline in methanol gave acyl nitroso species in situ, which were trapped in nitroso-Diels–Alder (NDA) reactions with various dienes to afford the corresponding cycloadducts in high yields (90–98%). Competing ene products were also present for dienes containing both alkene π-bonds and allylic σ-bonds, and the ene yields are higher with 1 than with 2. The use of the chiral hydroxamic acid, (R)-1-hydroxy-3-(1-phenylethylurea) 3 (same conditions) gave NDA cycloadducts in high yields (97–99%) with no ene product from 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene. NDA cycloadducts were not obtained from other hydroxamic acid analogues [RCONHOH (R = PhCH2 4; Ph(CH2)2 5; Ph(CH2)3 6; Ph(CH2)4 7; Ph 8; 2-pyridyl 9; 3-pyridyl 10] with various dienes using copper-oxidation but rather were obtained using sodium periodate, resulting in variable NDA yields (13–51%) from hydroxamic acids 1–10 with cyclohexa-1,3-diene and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene (several cycloadducts characterized by X-ray crystallography). The NDA and nitroso-ene reaction pathways of nitroso intermediates with dienes were mapped by DFT computations (B3LYP/6-31G*), which showed that the acyl nitroso species are super-reactive and that activation energies in the NDA processes are lower than the isomerization barriers between some cis- and trans-butadienes

    Mt. Suhora M dwarf survey - Detection of eight short-period variable stars

    The Mt. Suhora M\,dwarf survey searching for pulsations in low mass main sequence stars has acquired CCD photometry of 46 M\,dwarf stars during the first year of the project (Baran et al 2011). As a by-product of this search hundreds field stars have been checked for variability. This paper presents our initial result of a search for periodic variables in field stars observed in the course of the survey. On the basis of the periodicity and the shape of the light curves, eight new variables has been detected, among which five are δ\delta Scuti stars and three likely RR Lyrae stars. Although variation in one of the stars has been previously detected, it was classified incorrectly. To support our classification, in August 2010, we performed spectroscopic observations to derive spectral types and luminosity classes for all eight variable stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronomy, 12 pages, 1 table, 9 figure

    Sulfonyl-Substituted Heteroleptic Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes as Blue Emitters for Solution-Processable Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

    The synthesis is reported of a series of blue-emitting heteroleptic iridium complexes with phenylpyridine (ppy) ligands substituted with sulfonyl, fluorine, and/or methoxy substituents on the phenyl ring and a picolinate (pic) ancillary ligand. Some derivatives are additionally substituted with a mesityl substituent on the pyridyl ring of ppy to increase solubility. Analogues with two ppy and one 2-(2′-oxyphenyl)pyridyl (oppy) ancillary ligand were obtained by an unusual in situ nucleophilic displacement of a fluorine substituent on one of the ppy ligands by water followed by N^O chelation to iridium. The X-ray crystal structures of seven of the complexes are reported. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the complexes are supported by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Efficient blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices (PhOLEDs) were fabricated using a selection of the complexes in a simple device architecture using a solution-processed single-emitting layer in the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK:OXD-7(35%):Ir complex(15%)/TPBi/LiF/Al. The addition of a sulfonyl substituent blue-shifts the electroluminescence by ca. 12 nm to λmaxEL 463 nm with CIEx,y coordinates (0.19, 0.29), compared to the benchmark complex FIrpic (λmaxEL 475 nm, 0.19, 0.38) in directly comparable devices, confirming the potential of the new complexes to serve as effective blue dopants in PhOLEDs. Replacing a fluorine by a methoxy group in these complexes red shifts the PL and EL λmax by ca. 4–6 nm. The efficiency of the blue PhOLEDs of the sulfonyl-substituted complexes is, in most cases, significantly enhanced by the presence of a mesityl substituent on the pyridyl ring of the ppy ligands

    Precise measurements of radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility in (anti)ferromagnetic materials

    Dynamic magnetic susceptibility, χ\chi, was studied in several intermetallic materials exhibiting ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and metamagnetic transitions. Precise measurements by using a 14 MHz tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) allow detailed insight into the field and temperature dependence of χ\chi. In particular, local moment ferromagnets show a sharp peak in χ(T)\chi(T) near the Curie temperature, TcT_c. The peak amplitude decreases and shifts to higher temperatures with very small applied dc fields. Anisotropic measurements of CeVSb3_3 show that this peak is present provided the magnetic easy axis is aligned with the excitation field. In a striking contrast, small moment, itinerant ferromagnets (i.e., ZrZn2_2) show a broad maximum in χ(T)\chi(T) that responds differently to applied field. We believe that TDO measurements provide a very sensitive way to distinguish between local and itinerant moment magnetic orders. Local moment antiferromagnets do not show a peak at the N\'eel temperature, TNT_N, but only a sharp decrease of χ\chi below TNT_N due to the loss of spin-disorder scattering changing the penetration depth of the ac excitation field. Furthermore, we show that the TDO is capable of detecting changes in spin order as well as metamagnetic transitions. Finally, critical scaling of χ(T,H)\chi(T,H) in the vicinity of TCT_C is discussed in CeVSb3_3 and CeAgSb2_2

    Mental health in UK Biobank: development, implementation and results from an online questionnaire completed by 157 366 participants

    Background UK Biobank is a well-characterised cohort of over 500 000 participants that offers unique opportunities to investigate multiple diseases and risk factors. Aims An online mental health questionnaire completed by UK Biobank participants was expected to expand the potential for research into mental disorders. Method An expert working group designed the questionnaire, using established measures where possible, and consulting with a patient group regarding acceptability. Case definitions were defined using operational criteria for lifetime depression, mania, anxiety disorder, psychotic-like experiences and self-harm, as well as current post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorders. Results 157 366 completed online questionnaires were available by August 2017. Comparison of self-reported diagnosed mental disorder with a contemporary study shows a similar prevalence, despite respondents being of higher average socioeconomic status than the general population across a range of indicators. Thirty-five per cent (55 750) of participants had at least one defined syndrome, of which lifetime depression was the most common at 24% (37 434). There was extensive comorbidity among the syndromes. Mental disorders were associated with high neuroticism score, adverse life events and long-term illness; addiction and bipolar affective disorder in particular were associated with measures of deprivation. Conclusions The questionnaire represents a very large mental health survey in itself, and the results presented here show high face validity, although caution is needed owing to selection bias. Built into UK Biobank, these data intersect with other health data to offer unparalleled potential for crosscutting biomedical research involving mental health

    Isospin Effects in Nuclear Multifragmentation

    We develop an improved Statistical Multifragmentation Model that provides the capability to calculate calorimetric and isotopic observables with precision. With this new model we examine the influence of nuclear isospin on the fragment elemental and isotopic distributions. We show that the proposed improvements on the model are essential for studying isospin effects in nuclear multifragmentation. In particular, these calculations show that accurate comparisons to experimental data require that the nuclear masses, free energies and secondary decay must be handled with higher precision than many current models accord.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figure

    Monopole characteristics in various Abelian gauges

    Renormalization group (RG) smoothing is employed on the lattice to investigate and to compare the monopole structure of the SU(2) vacuum as seen in different gauges (maximally Abelian (MAG), Polyakov loop (PG) and Laplacian gauge (LG)). Physically relevant types of monopoles (LG and MAG) are distinguished by their behavior near the deconfining phase transition. For the LG, Abelian projection reproduces well the gauge independent monopole structure encoded in an auxiliary Higgs field. Density and localization properties of monopoles, their non-Abelian action and topological charge are studied. Results are presented confirming the Abelian dominance with respect to the non-perturbative static potential for all gauges considered.Comment: 36 pages, 12 figure
