    Key odorants of the typical aroma of Sherry vinegar

    A representative Sherry vinegar was analysed by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). Two GC-O techniques were used targeting compounds with impact on the perceived quality of Sherry vinegar, i.e. detection frequency and aroma extract dilution analysis. A total of 108 aromatic notes were detected and 64 of them were identified. Diacetyl, isoamyl acetate, acetic acid, and sotolon reached the highest frequency and flavour dilution (FD) factors. Ethyl acetate accounted for the maximum frequency but had only a FD factor of 4. Similarity tests were performed between the Sherry vinegar and model solutions of all possible combinations of these compounds. The highest value from the similarity test was observed when diacetyl, ethyl acetate and sotolon were added simultaneously. The profile of this model solution and the representative Sherry vinegar showed a good similarity in the general aroma description, which emphasises the important contribution of these 3 compounds to the global aroma of this vinegar

    Weighing black holes with warm absorbers

    We present a new technique for determining an upper limit for the mass of the black hole in active galactic nuclei showing warm absorption features. The method relies on the balance of radiative and gravitational forces acting on outflowing warm absorber clouds. It has been applied to 6 objects: five Seyfert 1 galaxies: IC 4329a, MCG-6-30-15, NGC 3516, NGC 4051 and NGC 5548; and one radio-quiet quasar: MR 2251-178. We discuss our result in comparison with other methods. The procedure could also be applied to any other radiatively driven optically thin outflow in which the spectral band covering the major absorption is directly observed.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables.     Quenching of Weak Interactions in Nucleon Matter

    We have calculated the one-body Fermi and Gamow-Teller charge-current, and vector and axial-vector neutral-current nuclear matrix elements in nucleon matter at densities of 0.08, 0.16 and 0.24 fm3^{-3} and proton fractions ranging from 0.2 to 0.5. The correlated states for nucleon matter are obtained by operating on Fermi-gas states by a symmetrized product of pair correlation operators determined from variational calculations with the Argonne v18 and Urbana IX two- and three-nucleon interactions. The squares of the charge current matrix elements are found to be quenched by 20 to 25 % by the short-range correlations in nucleon matter. Most of the quenching is due to spin-isospin correlations induced by the pion exchange interactions which change the isospins and spins of the nucleons. A large part of it can be related to the probability for a spin up proton quasi-particle to be a bare spin up/down proton/neutron. We also calculate the matrix elements of the nuclear Hamiltonian in the same correlated basis. These provide relatively mild effective interactions which give the variational energies in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The calculated two-nucleon effective interaction describes the spin-isospin susceptibilities of nuclear and neutron matter fairly accurately. However \geq 3-body terms are necessary to reproduce the compressibility. All presented results use the simple 2-body cluster approximation to calculate the correlated basis matrix elements.Comment: submitted to PR

    Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio es el diseño de un parche bucoadhesivo para la administración transbucal de clorhidrato de doxepina utilizando diferentes polímeros así como la caracterización de dichos sistemas en cuanto al análisis calorimétrico y la capacidad de hinchamiento. Materiales y métodos: Se ha utilizado clorhidrato de doxepina y diferentes polímeros, carboximetilcelulosa sódica, hidroxipropilmetilcelulosa y chitosan. La calorimetría diferencial de barrido (DSC) se ha realizado en un dispositivo Mettler FP 80 equipado con un horno FP 85 y la capacidad de hinchamiento utilizando placas de agar. Resultados: Se obtienen termogramas de los parches y las mezclas físicas donde se observan transiciones endotérmicas entre 30 y 120º C y el pico endotérmico del principio activo en las mezclas físicas binarias. La entalpía de deshidratación es similar en los polímeros de carboximetilcelulosa sódica y chitosan (281 J/g) siendo menor en la película de hidroxipropilmetilcelulosa (251 J/g), al igual que el porcentaje de hidratación donde se demuestra que los parches elaborados con hidroxipropilmetilcelulosa presenta menor tendencia a captar agua (55,91 %) frente al 67,04 % y 67,30 % de la carboximetilcelulosa sódica y chitosan, respectivamente. Conclusión: Los resultados obtenidos muestran que existe compatibilidad entre los componentes de la formulación y los datos de entalpía se correlacionan con los datos obtenidos en el ensayo de hinchamiento.Aim: The aim of this study is to design a bucoadhesive patch for the transbuccal administration of doxepin hydrochloride using different polymers as well as the characterization of these systems for calorimetric analysis and the swelling capacity. Materials and methods: Doxepin hydrochloride was used as well as various polymers; carboxymethylcellulose sodium, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose and chitosan. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was carried out using a Mettler FP 80 device equipped with a FP 85 oven and the swelling capacity using agar plates. Results: Thermograms obtained patches and physical mixtures where there are endothermic transitions between 30 and 120º C and the endothermic peak of the active principle in binary physical mixtures. Dehydration enthalpy is similar in polymers of carboxymethylcellulose sodium and chitosan (281 J/g), the film having less hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (251 J/g), the percentage of moisture shows that the patches prepared with hydroxypropylmethylcellulose have less tendency to collect water (55.91 %) compared to 67.04 % and 67.30 % with sodium carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan, respectively. Conclusion: The results show that there is compatibility between the components of the formulation and the enthalpy data correlate with the data obtained in the swelling test

    Insights into Pasteurellaceae carriage dynamics in the nasal passages of healthy beef calves

    We investigated three bovine respiratory pathobionts in healthy cattle using qPCR optimised and validated to quantify Histophilus somni, Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida over a wide dynamic range. A longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the carriage and density of these bacteria in the nasal passages of healthy beef calves (n=60) housed over winter in an experimental farm setting. The three pathobiont species exhibited remarkably different carriage rates and density profiles. At housing, high carriage rates were observed for P. multocida (95%), and H. somni (75%), while fewer calves were positive for M. haemolytica (13%). Carriage rates for all three bacterial species declined over the 75-day study, but not all individuals became colonised despite sharing of environment and airspace. Colonisation patterns ranged from continuous to intermittent and were different among pathobiont species. Interval-censored exponential survival models estimated the median duration of H. somni and P. multocida carriage at 14.8 (CI95%: 10.6–20.9) and 55.5 (CI95%: 43.3–71.3) days respectively, and found higher density P. multocida carriage was associated with slower clearance (p = 0.036). This work offers insights into the dynamics of pathobiont carriage and provides a potential platform for further data collection and modelling studies

    Structure Performance Relationship of LaFe1 xCoxO3 Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution, Isopropanol Oxidation, and Glycerol Oxidation

    Mitigating high energy costs related to sustainable H2 production via water electrolysis is important to make this process commercially viable. Possible approaches are the investigation of low cost, highly active oxygen evolution reaction OER catalysts and the exploration of alternative anode reactions, such as the electrocatalytic isopropanol oxidation reaction iPOR or the glycerol oxidation reaction GOR , offering the possibility of simultaneously lowering the anodic overpotential and generating value added products. A suitable class of catalysts are non noble metal based perovskites with the general formula ABO3, featuring rare earth metal cations at the A and transition metals at the B site. We synthesised a series of LaFe1 xCoxO3 materials with x 0 0.70 by automated co precipitation at constant pH and subsequent calcination at 800 amp; 8201; C. X ray diffraction studies revealed that the phase purity was preserved in samples with x amp; 8804;0.3. The activity towards the OER, iPOR, and GOR was investigated by rotating disk electrode voltammetry, showing a relation between structure and metal composition with the activity trends observed for the three reactions.     HER2-Enriched Subtype and ERBB2 Expression in HER2-Positive Breast Cancer Treated with Dual HER2 Blockade

    Background: Identification of HER2-positive breast cancers with high anti-HER2 sensitivity could help de-escalate chemotherapy. Here, we tested a clinically applicable RNA-based assay that combines ERBB2 and the HER2-enriched (HER2-E) intrinsic subtype in HER2-positive disease treated with dual HER2-blockade without chemotherapy. Methods: A research-based PAM50 assay was applied in 422 HER2-positive tumors from five II-III clinical trials (SOLTI-PAMELA, TBCRC023, TBCRC006, PER-ELISA, EGF104090). In SOLTI-PAMELA, TBCRC023, TBCRC006, and PER-ELISA, all patients had early disease and were treated with neoadjuvant lapatinib or pertuzumab plus trastuzumab for 12-24 weeks. Primary outcome was pathological complete response (pCR). In EGF104900, 296 women with advanced disease were randomized to receive either lapatinib alone or lapatinib plus trastuzumab. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall response rate (ORR), and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. Results: A total of 305 patients with early and 117 patients with advanced HER2-positive disease were analyzed. In early disease, HER2-E represented 83.8% and 44.7% of ERBB2-high and ERBB2-low tumors, respectively. Following lapatinib and trastuzumab, the HER2-E and ERBB2 (HER2-E/ERBB2)-high group showed a higher pCR rate compared to the rest (44.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 35.4% to 53.9% vs 11.6%, 95% CI = 6.9% to 18.0%; adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 6.05, 95% CI = 3.10 to 11.80, P <. 001). Similar findings were observed with neoadjuvant trastuzumab and pertuzumab (pCR rate of 66.7% in HER2-E/ERBB2-high, 95% CI = 22.3% to 95.7% vs 14.7% in others, 95% CI = 4.9% to 31.1%; adjusted OR = 11.60, 95% CI = 1.66 to 81.10, P =. 01). In the advanced setting, the HER2-E/ERBB2-high group was independently associated with longer PFS (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.35 to 0.79, P <. 001); higher ORR (16.3%, 95% CI = 8.9% to 26.2% vs 3.7%, 95% CI = 0.8% to 10.3%, P =. 02); and longer OS (HR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.44 to 0.97, P =. 01). Conclusions: Combining HER2-E subtype and ERBB2 mRNA into a single assay identifies tumors with high responsiveness to HER2-targeted therapy. This biomarker could help de-escalate chemotherapy in approximately 40% of patients with HER2-positive breast cancer

    Anisotropy studies around the galactic centre at EeV energies with the Auger Observatory

    Data from the Pierre Auger Observatory are analyzed to search for anisotropies near the direction of the Galactic Centre at EeV energies. The exposure of the surface array in this part of the sky is already significantly larger than that of the fore-runner experiments. Our results do not support previous findings of localized excesses in the AGASA and SUGAR data. We set an upper bound on a point-like flux of cosmic rays arriving from the Galactic Centre which excludes several scenarios predicting sources of EeV neutrons from Sagittarius AA. Also the events detected simultaneously by the surface and fluorescence detectors (the `hybrid' data set), which have better pointing accuracy but are less numerous than those of the surface array alone, do not show any significant localized excess from this direction.Comment: Matches published versio
