The Effect of Hydrothermal Treatment on Olivine Nano-Silica

    Get PDF
This paper provides an overview of the effects of ripening the olivine nano-silica to form particles with a lower specific surface area for optimal use in high performance concrete. The nano-silica was ripened using a hydrothermal treatment in a mixed batch reactor at 90 °C, pH ranging from 8 to 10 and a silica weight percentage of three and six percent. The specific surface area of the olivine nano-silica can be reduced by 62 percent by Ostwald ripening in 22 hours. This reduction corresponds to a 80 percent drop of the micropore surface area and a 57 percent drop of the external surface area. The different hydrothermal conditions did not affect the final specific surface area at the equilibrium. However, the use of a high energy mixer reduced the specific surface area by 52 percent in only five minutes. Despite the reduction in specific surface area, the aggregates of the original olivine nano-silica are not dissolved during the ripening process. Ruthenium-Locked Helical Chirality: A Barrier of Inversion and Formation of an Asymmetric Macrocycle

Upon coordination to metal centers, tetradentate ligands based on the 6,6'-bis(2 ''-aminopyridyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (bapbpy) structure form helical chiral complexes due to the steric clash between the terminal pyridines of the ligand. For octahedral ruthenium(II) complexes, the two additional axial ligands bound to the metal center, when different, generate diastereotopic aromatic protons that can be distinguished by NMR. Based on these geometrical features, the inversion barrier of helical [Ru-II(L)(RR'SO)Cl](+) complexes, where L is a sterically hindered bapbpy derivative and RR'SO is a chiral or achiral sulfoxide ligand, was studied by variable-temperature H-1 NMR The coalescence energies for the inversion of the helical chirality of [Ru(bapbpy)(DMSO)(Cl)]Cl and [Ru(bapbpy)(MTSO)(Cl)]Cl (where MTSO is (R)-methyl p-tolylsulfoxide) were found to be 43 and 44 kJ/mol, respectively. By contrast, in [Ru(biqbpy)(DMSO)(Cl)]Cl (biqbpy = 6,6'-bis(aminoquinolyl)-2,2'-bipyridine increased strain caused by the larger terminal quinoline groups resulted in a coalescence temperature higher than 376 K, which pointed to an absence of helical chirality inversion at room temperature. Further increasing the steric strain by introducing methoxy groups ortho to the nitrogen atoms of the terminal pyridyl groups in bapbpy resulted in the serendipitous discovery of a ring-closing reaction that took place upon trying to make [Ru(OMe-bapbpy)(DMSO)Cl](+) (OMe-bapbpy = 6,6'-bis(6-methoxy-aminopyridyl)2,2'-bipyridine). This reaction generated, in excellent yields, a chiral complex [Ru(L '')(DMSO)Cl]Cl, where L '' is an asymmetric tetrapyridyl macrocycle. This unexpected transformation appears to be specific to ruthenium(II) as macrocyclization did not occur upon coordination of the same ligand to palladium(II) or rhodium(III).Macromolecular Biochemistr

Background: To develop and evaluate a strategy for reducing the prevalence and impact of waterborne disease, a water quality intervention was developed for Fiji by Give Clean Water, Inc. in partnership with the Fiji Ministry of Health. Residents were provided and trained on how to use a Sawyer® PointONE™ filter, while also being taught proper handwashing techniques. At the time of the filter installation, all households were surveyed inquiring about the prior 2- to 4-week period. Households were measured a second time between 19 and 225 days later (mean = 66 days). Results: To date, five economic and health outcomes have been tracked on 503 households to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention. When comparing baseline to follow-up among the 503 households, the 2-week diarrhea prevalence decreased in households from 17.5% at baseline to 1.8% at follow-up. Also, the 2-week prevalence of severe diarrhea decreased per household from 9.7% at baseline to 0.6% at follow-up. Finally, monthly diarrhea-related medical costs reduced by an average of Fijian (FJ) 3.54perperson,andmonthlywaterexpensesreducedbyFJ3.54 per person, and monthly water expenses reduced by FJ 0.63 per person. All estimated values are obtained from general linear and logistic mixed-effect models, which adjusted for location, season, time to follow-up, household size, water source, and respondent changing. Changes in economic and health outcomes from installation to follow-up were statistically significant (p \u3c 0.05) in all cases, in both unadjusted and adjusted models. Conclusions: The installation of water filters shows promise for the reduction of diarrhea prevalence in Fiji, as well as the reduction of diarrhea-related medical costs and water expenses. Future work entails evaluation in other countries and contexts, long-term health monitoring, and comparison to alternative water quality interventions

Land Surface Temperature from Ka-band (37 GHZ) Passive Microwave Observations

An alternative to thermal infrared satellite sensors for measuring land surface temperature (T<inf>s</inf>) is presented. The 37 GHz vertical polarized brightness temperature is used to derive T<inf>s</inf> because it is considered the most appropriate microwave frequency for temperature retrieval. This channel balances a reduced sensitivity to soil surface characteristics with a relatively high atmospheric transmissivity. It is shown that with a simple linear relationship, accurate values for T<inf>s</inf> can be obtained from this frequency, with a theoretical bias of within 1 K for 70% of vegetated land areas of the globe. Barren, sparsely vegetated, and open shrublands cannot be accurately described with this single channel approach because variable surface conditions become important. The precision of the retrieved land surface temperature is expected to be better than 2.5 K for forests and 3.5 K for low vegetation. This method can be used to complement existing infrared derived temperature products, especially during clouded conditions. With several microwave radiometers currently in orbit, this method can be used to observe the diurnal temperature cycles with surprising accuracy. © 2009 by the American Geophysical Union

Induction of a four-way junction structure in the DNA palindromic hexanucleotide 5 '-d(CGTACG)-3 ' by a mononuclear platinum complex

Four-way junctions (4WJs) are supramolecular DNA assemblies comprising four interacting DNA strands that in biology are involved in DNA-damage repair. In this study, a new mononuclear platinum(II) complex 1 was prepared that is capable of driving the crystallization of the DNA oligomer 5 '-d(CGTACG)-3 ' specifically into a 4WJ-like motif. In the crystal structure of the 1-CGTACG adduct, the distorted-square-planar platinum complex binds to the core of the 4WJ-like motif through pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding, without forming any platinum-nitrogen coordination bonds. Our observations suggest that the specific molecular properties of the metal complex are crucially responsible for triggering the selective assembly of this peculiar DNA superstructure.Metals in Catalysis, Biomimetics & Inorganic Material

BACKGROUND: Recent research has demonstrated that many swine and swine farmers in the Netherlands and Canada are colonized with MRSA. However, no studies to date have investigated carriage of MRSA among swine and swine farmers in the United States (U.S.). METHODS: We sampled the nares of 299 swine and 20 workers from two different production systems in Iowa and Illinois, comprising approximately 87,000 live animals. MRSA isolates were typed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) using SmaI and EagI restriction enzymes, and by multi locus sequence typing (MLST). PCR was used to determine SCCmec type and presence of the pvl gene. RESULTS: In this pilot study, overall MRSA prevalence in swine was 49% (147/299) and 45% (9/20) in workers. The prevalence of MRSA carriage among production system A's swine varied by age, ranging from 36% (11/30) in adult swine to 100% (60/60) of animals aged 9 and 12 weeks. The prevalence among production system A's workers was 64% (9/14). MRSA was not isolated from production system B's swine or workers. Isolates examined were not typeable by PFGE when SmaI was used, but digestion with EagI revealed that the isolates were clonal and were not related to common human types in Iowa (USA100, USA300, and USA400). MLST documented that the isolates were ST398. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that colonization of swine by MRSA was very common on one swine production system in the midwestern U.S., suggesting that agricultural animals could become an important reservoir for this bacterium. MRSA strain ST398 was the only strain documented on this farm. Further studies are examining carriage rates on additional farms
