Autocalibration with the Minimum Number of Cameras with Known Pixel Shape
In 3D reconstruction, the recovery of the calibration parameters of the
cameras is paramount since it provides metric information about the observed
scene, e.g., measures of angles and ratios of distances. Autocalibration
enables the estimation of the camera parameters without using a calibration
device, but by enforcing simple constraints on the camera parameters. In the
absence of information about the internal camera parameters such as the focal
length and the principal point, the knowledge of the camera pixel shape is
usually the only available constraint. Given a projective reconstruction of a
rigid scene, we address the problem of the autocalibration of a minimal set of
cameras with known pixel shape and otherwise arbitrarily varying intrinsic and
extrinsic parameters. We propose an algorithm that only requires 5 cameras (the
theoretical minimum), thus halving the number of cameras required by previous
algorithms based on the same constraint. To this purpose, we introduce as our
basic geometric tool the six-line conic variety (SLCV), consisting in the set
of planes intersecting six given lines of 3D space in points of a conic. We
show that the set of solutions of the Euclidean upgrading problem for three
cameras with known pixel shape can be parameterized in a computationally
efficient way. This parameterization is then used to solve autocalibration from
five or more cameras, reducing the three-dimensional search space to a
two-dimensional one. We provide experiments with real images showing the good

Shonan Rotation Averaging: Global Optimality by Surfing
Shonan Rotation Averaging is a fast, simple, and elegant rotation averaging
algorithm that is guaranteed to recover globally optimal solutions under mild
assumptions on the measurement noise. Our method employs semidefinite
relaxation in order to recover provably globally optimal solutions of the
rotation averaging problem. In contrast to prior work, we show how to solve
large-scale instances of these relaxations using manifold minimization on (only
slightly) higher-dimensional rotation manifolds, re-using existing
high-performance (but local) structure-from-motion pipelines. Our method thus
preserves the speed and scalability of current SFM methods, while recovering

Globally aligned photomosaic of the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 37°18.5′N) : release of georeferenced data, mosaic construction, and viewing software

The photomosaic was generated from digital photographs acquired using the ARGO II seafloor imaging system during the 1996 LUSTRE cruise, which surveyed a ∼1 km2 zone and provided a coverage of ∼20% of the seafloor. The photomosaic has a pixel resolution of 15 mm and encloses the areas with known active hydrothermal venting. The final mosaic is generated after an optimization that includes the automatic detection of the same benthic features across different images (feature-matching), followed by a global alignment of images based on the vehicle navigation. We also provide software to construct mosaics from large sets of images for which georeferencing information exists (location, attitude, and altitude per image), to visualize them, and to extract data. Georeferencing information can be provided by the raw navigation data (collected during the survey) or result from the optimization obtained from image matching. Mosaics based solely on navigation can be readily generated by any user but the optimization and global alignment of the mosaic requires a case-by-case approach for which no universally software is available. The Lucky Strike photomosaics (optimized and navigated-only) are publicly available through the Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS, http://www.marine-geo.org). Euclidean Structure from N>=2 Parallel Circles: Theory and Algorithms
International audienceOur problem is that of recovering, in one view, the 2D Euclidean structure, induced by the projections of N parallel circles. This structure is a prerequisite for camera calibration and pose computation. Until now, no general method has been described for N > 2. The main contribution of this work is to state the problem in terms of a system of linear equations to solve.We give a closed-form solution as well as bundle adjustment-like refinements, increasing the technical applicability and numerical stability. Our theoretical approach generalizes and extends all those described in existing works for N = 2 in several respects, as we can treat simultaneously pairs of orthogonal lines and pairs of circles within a unified framework. The proposed algorithm may be easily implemented, using well-known numerical algorithms. Its performance is illustrated by simulations and experiments with real images
Common-path interferometric label-free protein sensing with resonant dielectric nanostructures
Research toward photonic biosensors for point-of-care applications and personalized medicine is driven by the need for high-sensitivity, low-cost, and reliable technology. Among the most sensitive modalities, interferometry offers particularly high performance, but typically lacks the required operational simplicity and robustness. Here, we introduce a common-path interferometric sensor based on guided-mode resonances to combine high performance with inherent stability. The sensor exploits the simultaneous excitation of two orthogonally polarized modes, and detects the relative phase change caused by biomolecular binding on the sensor surface. The wide dynamic range of the sensor, which is essential for fabrication and angle tolerance, as well as versatility, is controlled by integrating multiple, tuned structures in the field of view. This approach circumvents the trade-off between sensitivity and dynamic range, typical of other phase-sensitive modalities, without increasing complexity. Our sensor enables the challenging label-free detection of procalcitonin, a small protein (13 kDa) and biomarker for infection, at the clinically relevant concentration of 1 pg mL−1, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 35. This result indicates the utility for an exemplary application in antibiotic guidance, and opens possibilities for detecting further clinically or environmentally relevant small molecules with an intrinsically simple and robust sensing modality
High speed e-beam writing for large area photonic nanostructures-a choice of parameters
Photonic nanostructures are used for many optical systems and applications. However, some high-end applications require the use of electron-beam lithography (EBL) to generate such nanostructures. An important technological bottleneck is the exposure time of the EBL systems, which can exceed 24 hours per 1 cm2. Here, we have developed a method based on a target function to systematically increase the writing speed of EBL. As an example, we use as the target function the fidelity of the Fourier Transform spectra of nanostructures that are designed for thin film light trapping applications, and optimize the full parameter space of the lithography process. Finally, we are able to reduce the exposure time by a factor of 5.5 without loss of photonic performance. We show that the performances of the fastest written structures are identical to the original ones within experimental error. As the target function can be varied according to different purposes, the method is also applicable to guided mode resonant grating and many other areas. These findings contribute to the advancement of EBL and point towards making the technology more attractive for commercial applications
Art as a Means to Disrupt Routine Use of Space
This paper examines the publicly visible aspects of
counter-terrorism activity in pedestrian spaces as mechanisms
of disruption. We discuss the objectives of counter-terrorism in
terms of disruption of routine for both hostile actors and general
users of public spaces, categorising the desired effects as 1)
triangulation of attention; 2) creation of unexpected performance;
and 3) choreographing of crowd flow. We review the
potential effects of these existing forms of disruption used in
counter-terrorism. We then present a palette of art, advertising,
architecture, and entertainment projects that offer examples of
the same disruption effects of triangulation, performance and
flow. We conclude by reviewing the existing support for public
art in counter-terrorism policy, and build on the argument for art
as an important alternative to authority. We suggest that while
advocates of authority-based disruption might regard the playfulness
of some art as a weakness, the unexpectedness it offers
is perhaps a key strengt
Age-Related Attenuation of Dominant Hand Superiority
The decline of motor performance of the human hand-arm system with age is well-documented. While dominant hand performance is superior to that of the non-dominant hand in young individuals, little is known of possible age-related changes in hand dominance. We investigated age-related alterations of hand dominance in 20 to 90 year old subjects. All subjects were unambiguously right-handed according to the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. In Experiment 1, motor performance for aiming, postural tremor, precision of arm-hand movement, speed of arm-hand movement, and wrist-finger speed tasks were tested.
