Quantum dynamics of the avian compass
The ability of migratory birds to orient relative to the Earth's magnetic
field is believed to involve a coherent superposition of two spin states of a
radical electron pair. However, the mechanism by which this coherence can be
maintained in the face of strong interactions with the cellular environment has
remained unclear. This Letter addresses the problem of decoherence between two
electron spins due to hyperfine interaction with a bath of spin 1/2 nuclei.
Dynamics of the radical pair density matrix are derived and shown to yield a
simple mechanism for sensing magnetic field orientation. Rates of dephasing and
decoherence are calculated ab initio and found to yield millisecond coherence
times, consistent with behavioral experiments
Monte Carlo Studies of a Novel LiF Radiator for RICH Detectors
We show that a multifaceted LiF radiator produces more Cherenkov light and
has better resolution per photon than a flat radiator slab when used in a ring
imaging Cherenkov counter. Such a system is being considered for the CLEO III
upgrade.Comment: 9 page
Distinct roles of DBHS family members in the circadian transcriptional feedback loop
Factors interacting with core circadian clock components are essential to achieve transcriptional feedback necessary for metazoan clocks. Here we show that all three members of the Drosophila Behavior Human Splicing (DBHS) family of RNA-binding proteins play a role in the mammalian circadian oscillator, abrogating or altering clock function when overexpressed or depleted in cells. Although these proteins are members of so-called nuclear paraspeckles, depletion of paraspeckles themselves via silencing of the structural non-coding RNA (ncRNA) Neat1 did not affect overall clock function, suggesting that paraspeckles are not required for DBHS-mediated circadian effects. Instead, we show that the proteins bound to circadian promoter DNA in a fashion that required the PERIOD (PER) proteins, and potently repressed E box-mediated transcription but not CMV promoter-mediated transcription when exogenously recruited. Nevertheless, mice with one or both copies of these genes deleted show only small changes in period length or clock gene expression in vivo. Data from transient transfections show that each of these proteins can either repress or activate depending on the context. Taken together, our data suggest that all of the DBHS family members serve overlapping or redundant roles as transcriptional cofactors at circadian clock-regulated genes
Determination of 2beta_s in B_s -> J/psi K^+ K^- Decays in the Presence of a K^+K^- S-Wave Contribution
We present the complete differential decay rates for the process B_s -> J/psi
K^+ K^- including S-wave and P-wave angular momentum states for the K^+ K^-
meson pair. We examine the effect of an S-wave component on the determination
of the CP violating phase 2beta_s. Data from the B-factories indicate that an
S-wave component of about 10% may be expected in the phi(1020) resonance
region. We find that if this contribution is ignored in the analysis it could
cause a bias in the measured value of 2beta_s towards zero of the order of 10%.
When including the K^+K^- S-wave component we observe an increase in the
statistical error on 2beta_s by less than 15%. We also point out the
possibility of measuring the sign of cos2beta_s by using the interference
between the K^+K^- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes to resolve the strong phase
ambiguity. We conclude that the S-wave component can be properly taken into
account in the analysis.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Test of the photon detection system for the LHCb RICH Upgrade in a charged particle beam
The LHCb detector will be upgraded to make more efficient use of the
available luminosity at the LHC in Run III and extend its potential for
discovery. The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors are key components of the LHCb
detector for particle identification. In this paper we describe the setup and
the results of tests in a charged particle beam, carried out to assess
prototypes of the upgraded opto-electronic chain from the Multi-Anode PMT
photosensor to the readout and data acquisition system.Comment: 25 pages, 22 figure
A New Model for Fermion Masses in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories
We present a simple model for fermion mass matrices and quark mixing in the
context of supersymmetric grand unified theories and show its agreement with
experiment. Our model realizes the GUT mass relations , , in a new way and is easily consistent with values of
suggested by MSSM fits to LEP data.Comment: Latex, 8 p., ITP-SB-93-37 (revised version contains minor changes in

The Semileptonic Decays and from QCD Sum Rules
We investigate the semileptonic decays of B and D mesons into and
mesons, respectively, by means of QCD sum rules. We find that for the
vector formfactors involved the pole dominance hypothesis is valid to good
accuracy with pole masses in the expected range. Pole dominance, however, does
not apply to the axial formfactors which results in specific predictions for
the predominant polarization of the meson and the shape of the lepton
spectrum. For the total decay rates we find , , and .Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures included as uu-encoded file, needs REVTEX,

Bayesian Fit of Exclusive Decays: The Standard Model Operator Basis
We perform a model-independent fit of the short-distance couplings
within the Standard Model set of and operators. Our analysis of , and decays is the first to harness the full
power of the Bayesian approach: all major sources of theory uncertainty
explicitly enter as nuisance parameters. Exploiting the latest measurements,
the fit reveals a flipped-sign solution in addition to a Standard-Model-like
solution for the couplings . Each solution contains about half of the
posterior probability, and both have nearly equal goodness of fit. The Standard
Model prediction is close to the best-fit point. No New Physics contributions
are necessary to describe the current data. Benefitting from the improved
posterior knowledge of the nuisance parameters, we predict ranges for currently
unmeasured, optimized observables in the angular distributions of .Comment: 42 pages, 8 figures; v2: Using new lattice input for f_Bs,

Anomalous coupling effects in exclusive radiative B-meson decays
The top-quark FCNC processes will be searched for at the CERN LHC, which are
correlated with the B-meson decays. In this paper, we study the effects of
top-quark anomalous interactions in the exclusive radiative and decays. With the current experimental data of
the branching ratios, the direct CP and the isospin asymmetries, bounds on the
coupling from and
from decays are derived,
respectively. The bound on from is generally compatible with that from . However, the isospin asymmetry further
restrict the phase of , and the combined bound results
in the upper limit, , which is lower than the
CDF result. For real , the upper bound on is about of the same order as the discovery
potential of ATLAS with an integrated luminosity of . For
decays, the NP contribution is enhanced by a large CKM factor
, and the constraint on coupling is rather
restrictive, . With refined
measurements to be available at the LHCb and the future super-B factories, we
can get close correlations between and the rare
decays, which will be studied directly at the LHC ATLAS and CMS.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, pdflate
Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0→K∗0μ+μ−
The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay B 0→ K ∗0 μ + μ − are studied using a data sample, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1. Several angular observables are measured in bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, q 2. A first measurement of the zero-crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system is also presented. The zero-crossing point is measured to be q20=4.9±0.9GeV2/c4 , where the uncertainty is the sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions
