    Spin observables in three-body direct nuclear reactions

    Direct nuclear reactions d+A\vec{d}+A and p+(An)\vec{p}+(An) are described in the framework of three-body Faddeev-type equations. Differential cross section and analyzing powers are calculated using several optical potential models and compared with the experimental data.     Clinical and prognostic implications of phenomapping in patients with heart failure receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy

    Despite having an indication for cardiac resynchronization therapy according to current guidelines, patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction who receive cardiac resynchronization therapy do not consistently derive benefit from it.; To determine whether unsupervised clustering analysis (phenomapping) can identify distinct phenogroups of patients with differential outcomes among cardiac resynchronization therapy recipients from routine clinical practice.; We used unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis of phenotypic data after data reduction (55 clinical, biological and echocardiographic variables) to define new phenogroups among 328 patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction from routine clinical practice enrolled before cardiac resynchronization therapy. Clinical outcomes and cardiac resynchronization therapy response rate were studied according to phenogroups.; Although all patients met the recommended criteria for cardiac resynchronization therapy implantation, phenomapping analysis classified study participants into four phenogroups that differed distinctively in clinical, biological, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic characteristics and outcomes. Patients from phenogroups 1 and 2 had the most improved outcome in terms of mortality, associated with cardiac resynchronization therapy response rates of 81% and 78%, respectively. In contrast, patients from phenogroups 3 and 4 had cardiac resynchronization therapy response rates of 39% and 59%, respectively, and the worst outcome, with a considerably increased risk of mortality compared with patients from phenogroup 1 (hazard ratio 3.23, 95% confidence interval 1.9-5.5 and hazard ratio 2.49, 95% confidence interval 1.38-4.50, respectively).; Among patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction with an indication for cardiac resynchronization therapy from routine clinical practice, phenomapping identifies subgroups of patients with differential clinical, biological and echocardiographic features strongly linked to divergent outcomes and responses to cardiac resynchronization therapy. This approach may help to identify patients who will derive most benefit from cardiac resynchronization therapy in "individualized" clinical practice

    Integration of beta-Catenin, Sirtuin, and FOXO Signaling Protects from Mutant Huntingtin Toxicity

    One of the current challenges of neurodegenerative disease research is to determine whether signaling pathways that are essential to cellular homeostasis might contribute to neuronal survival and modulate the pathogenic process in human disease. In Caenorhabditis elegans, sir-2.1/SIRT1 overexpression protects neurons from the early phases of expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) toxicity, and this protection requires the longevity-promoting factor daf-16/FOXO. Here, we show that this neuroprotective effect also requires the DAF-16/FOXO partner bar-1/beta-catenin and putative DAF-16-regulated gene ucp-4, the sole mitochondrial uncoupling protein (UCP) in nematodes. These results fit with a previously proposed mechanism in which the beta-catenin FOXO and SIRT1 proteins may together regulate gene expression and cell survival. Knockdown of beta-catenin enhanced the vulnerability to cell death of mutant-huntingtin striatal cells derived from the HdhQ111 knock-in mice. In addition, this effect was compensated by SIRT1 overexpression and accompanied by the modulation of neuronal UCP expression levels, further highlighting a cross-talk between beta-catenin and SIRT1 in the modulation of mutant polyQ cytoxicity. Taken together, these results suggest that integration of beta-catenin, sirtuin and FOXO signaling protects from the early phases of mutant huntingtin toxicity

    An unusual case of a microscopic alveolar adenoma coexisting with lung carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Alveolar adenomas are extremely rare, benign, primary lung tumors of unknown histogenesis that are characterized by proliferative type II alveolar epithelium and septal mesenchyma. Mostly incidental, they are clinically important as they can imitate benign primary and secondary malignant tumors and at times are difficult to differentiate from early-stage lung cancer. We describe the case of a 59-year-old man with an incidental microscopic alveolar adenoma coexisting with poorly differentiated lung carcinoma.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 59-year-old Caucasian man with a medical history of smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was incidentally found to have a right upper lobe mass while undergoing a computed tomographic chest scan as part of a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease clinical trial. Our patient underwent a right upper lobectomy after a bronchoscopic biopsy of the mass revealed the mass to be a carcinoma. A pathological examination revealed an incidental, small, 0.2 cm, well circumscribed lesion on the staple line margin of the lobectomy in addition to the carcinoma. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed the lesion to be an alveolar adenoma.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We report the rare presentation of a microscopic alveolar adenoma coexisting with lung carcinoma. Alveolar adenoma is an entirely benign incidental neoplasm that can be precisely diagnosed using immunohistochemical analysis in addition to its unique histopathological characteristics.</p

    Countercurrent chromatography in analytical chemistry (IUPAC technical report)

    © 2009 IUPACCountercurrent chromatography (CCC) is a generic term covering all forms of liquid-liquid chromatography that use a support-free liquid stationary phase held in place by a simple centrifugal or complex centrifugal force field. Biphasic liquid systems are used with one liquid phase being the stationary phase and the other being the mobile phase. Although initiated almost 30 years ago, CCC lacked reliable columns. This is changing now, and the newly designed centrifuges appearing on the market make excellent CCC columns. This review focuses on the advantages of a liquid stationary phase and addresses the chromatographic theory of CCC. The main difference with classical liquid chromatography (LC) is the variable volume of the stationary phase. There are mainly two different ways to obtain a liquid stationary phase using centrifugal forces, the hydrostatic way and the hydrodynamic way. These two kinds of CCC columns are described and compared. The reported applications of CCC in analytical chemistry and comparison with other separation and enrichment methods show that the technique can be successfully used in the analysis of plants and other natural products, for the separation of biochemicals and pharmaceuticals, for the separation of alkaloids from medical herbs, in food analysis, etc. On the basis of the studies of the last two decades, recommendations are also given for the application of CCC in trace inorganic analysis and in radioanalytical chemistry

    Recurrence properties of hypercyclic operators

    [EN] We generalize the notions of hypercyclic operators, U-frequently hypercyclic operators and frequently hypercyclic operators by introducing a new concept in linear dynamics, namely A-hypercyclicity. We then state an A-hypercyclicity criterion, inspired by the hypercyclicity criterion and the frequent hypercyclicity criterion, and we show that this criterion characterizes the A-hypercyclicity for weighted shifts.     Epstein-Barr Virus Coinfection in Cerebrospinal Fluid Is Associated With Increased Mortality in Malawian Adults With Bacterial Meningitis

    Mortality from adult bacterial meningitis exceeds 50% in sub-Saharan Africa. We postulated that—particularly in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)—herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contribute to poor outcome. CSF from 149 Malawian adults with bacterial meningitis and 39 controls were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction. EBV was detected in 79 of 149 bacterial meningitis patients. Mortality (54%) was associated with higher CSF EBV load when adjusted for HIV (P = .01). CMV was detected in 11 of 115 HIV-infected patients, 8 of whom died. The mechanisms by which EBV and CMV contribute to poor outcome require further investigation

    Predictions of total and total reaction cross sections for nucleon-nucleus scattering up to 300 MeV

    Total reaction cross sections are predicted for nucleons scattering from various nuclei. Projectile energies to 300 MeV are considered. So also are mass variations of those cross sections at selected energies. All predictions have been obtained from coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding effective two-nucleon (NN) interactions with one body density matrix elements (OBDME) of the nuclear ground states. Good comparisons with data result when effective NN interactions defined by medium modification of free NN t matrices are used. Coupled with analyses of differential cross sections, these results are sensitive to details of the model ground states used to describe nuclei

    Adult Circadian Behavior in Drosophila Requires Developmental Expression of cycle, But Not period

    Circadian clocks have evolved as internal time keeping mechanisms that allow anticipation of daily environmental changes and organization of a daily program of physiological and behavioral rhythms. To better examine the mechanisms underlying circadian clocks in animals and to ask whether clock gene expression and function during development affected subsequent daily time keeping in the adult, we used the genetic tools available in Drosophila to conditionally manipulate the function of the CYCLE component of the positive regulator CLOCK/CYCLE (CLK/CYC) or its negative feedback inhibitor PERIOD (PER). Differential manipulation of clock function during development and in adulthood indicated that there is no developmental requirement for either a running clock mechanism or expression of per. However, conditional suppression of CLK/CYC activity either via per over-expression or cyc depletion during metamorphosis resulted in persistent arrhythmic behavior in the adult. Two distinct mechanisms were identified that may contribute to this developmental function of CLK/CYC and both involve the ventral lateral clock neurons (LNvs) that are crucial to circadian control of locomotor behavior: (1) selective depletion of cyc expression in the LNvs resulted in abnormal peptidergic small-LNv dorsal projections, and (2) PER expression rhythms in the adult LNvs appeared to be affected by developmental inhibition of CLK/CYC activity. Given the conservation of clock genes and circuits among animals, this study provides a rationale for investigating a possible similar developmental role of the homologous mammalian CLOCK/BMAL1 complex
