Leaf area index (LAI) of loblolly pine and emergent vegetation following a harvest. Trans
ABSTRACT. Forests provide goods and services to society and, often, refugia for plants and animals; forest managers utilize silviculture to provide ecosystem services and to create habitat. On the Coastal Plain of North Carolina, forest management objectives typically include wood fiber production but may also include the maintenance of environmental quality and, sometimes, species diversity. Silvicultural prescriptions alter stand structure and development trajectories by influencing the competitive interactions among plant species for site resources. Early site intervention may include nutrient additions and/or vegetation control; in coastal loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands, herbaceous and arborescent species can dominate the site leaf area index (LAI) for many years after a harvest (followed by planting). LAI is an important structural and functional component of a forest stand. Many eco‐hydrologic and water quality models do not accurately account for LAI as the process driver to evapotranspiration (ET), and thus they ignore the ecophysiological effects of LAI on site water balance and nutrient loading. We measured LAI of emergent vegetation following a harvest, mechanical site preparation, and then pine planting for a drained loblolly pine plantation in coastal North Carolina. For six years monthly, growing season estimates of LAI were obtained using a LI‐COR LAI 2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer (PCA) for control (D1), thinned (D3), and harvested (D2) watersheds. In this article, we present results from the D2 treatment. Temporal Stability and the Effects of Training on Saccade Latency in “Express Saccade Makers”
The temporal stability of saccade latency, and the effects of training, particularly in “express saccade makers” (ESMs), has received little attention. ESMs are healthy, naïve, adults, who persist in executing very many low latency “express saccades” (ES; saccades with latency of 80 ms to 130 ms), in conditions designed to suppress such responses. We investigated the stability of ES production (%ES) in 59 ESM and 54 non-ESM participants in overlap tasks. Within a single session, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for %ES in two runs of 200 trials was 0.97 (p30% of saccades over the two runs were ES, were classified as ESMs. For 60 participants tested over two sessions 12 weeks apart, and 30 participants tested in three sessions over approximately six months, the ICC for %ES was uniformly high (0.95, p<0.001 and 0.97, p<0.001 respectively) and participants behaved consistently with their initial classification. Fourteen participants (7 ESMs) were then exposed to training consisting of either gap or overlap tasks. Training increased %ES in both groups. However, when tested in overlap tasks, it was not sufficient to transform Normal participants into ESMs. We conclude that the pattern of saccade behaviour exhibited by ESMs constitutes a stable and distinct oculomotor phenotype
Time for global scale-up, not randomized trials, of uterine balloon tamponade for postpartum hemorrhage.
Maternal death is the greatest health disparity globally, with postpartum hemorrhage the most common cause. As senior leaders in obstetrics and maternal health from Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Honduras, India, Kenya, Nepal, Niger, Norway, Peru, Tanzania, the UK, the USA, and Zambia, we are deeply disturbed by recent calls for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) in women with uncontrolled postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Our collective experience, in combination with mounting evidence, unequivocally supports the effectiveness of commercial and condom UBTs in averting death and disability from PPH associated with atonic uterus. We believe it would be highly unethical to embark on an RCT of UBT, now or in the future, unless compared with a proven equivalent intervention. This article is protected by copyright. Late-Onset Parry-Romberg Syndrome With Atypical Neurological Manifestations: A Case Report
Parry-Romberg Syndrome (PRS) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by gradual facial hemiatrophy. We present a case study of a 64-year-old woman with late-onset PRS and linear scleroderma. The patient exhibited atypical PRS symptoms including leg numbness, hyper-reflexia, trigeminal neuralgia, and severe headaches. Diagnostic evaluations revealed chronic left-sided cerebral infarction, microhemorrhages, and nerve involvement. Treatment options for PRS are limited and aim to manage symptoms. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of late-onset PRS, emphasizing interdisciplinary approach. Further research and improved therapies are essential for better patient outcomes
Resonant Thermoelectric Nanophotonics
Photodetectors are typically based either on photocurrent generation from electron–hole pairs in semiconductor structures or on bolometry for wavelengths that are below bandgap absorption. In both cases, resonant plasmonic and nanophotonic structures have been successfully used to enhance performance. Here, we show subwavelength thermoelectric nanostructures designed for resonant spectrally selective absorption, which creates large localized temperature gradients even with unfocused, spatially uniform illumination to generate a thermoelectric voltage. We show that such structures are tunable and are capable of wavelength-specific detection, with an input power responsivity of up to 38 V W^(–1), referenced to incident illumination, and bandwidth of nearly 3 kHz. This is obtained by combining resonant absorption and thermoelectric junctions within a single suspended membrane nanostructure, yielding a bandgap-independent photodetection mechanism. We report results for both bismuth telluride/antimony telluride and chromel/alumel structures as examples of a potentially broader class of resonant nanophotonic thermoelectric materials for optoelectronic applications such as non-bandgap-limited hyperspectral and broadband photodetectors
Comparative study of Methotrexate and Cyclosporine in the treatment of Psoriasis
Background Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterized by sharply demarcated, erythematous squamous lesions, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of 0 to 11.8%. Methotrexate (MTX) and cyclosporine (CsA) are well known systemic therapies for moderate to severe chronic plague psoriasis.
Objective The aim of this study is compare the efficacy of methotrexate and cyclosporine in the treatment of Psoriasis.
Methods A prospective randomized study was conducting at the Dhulikhel Hospital, KUTH, Dhulikhel during November 2008 to July 2009 with the objective to compare the effectiveness, side effects and cost of MTX and CsA treatment in a context reflecting normal clinical practice.
Results A total of 64 patients (33 receiving MTX and 31 receiving CsA) were enrolled. These patients were followed every week for first month and their PASI score and side effects were recorded at 0, 1st, 2nd and 3rd month interval. In the study, the mean (± S.E) PASI score at base line was 23.34 ± 1.12 for MTX and 21.25 ± 1.07 for CsA group. After 12 weeks of treatment the mean ± S.E PASI score found to be 5.37 ± 0.42 for MTX and 4.56 ± 0.41 for CsA group. The difference in the response between the groups acquired statistically not significance (p=0.160 > 0.05) meaning there is no difference in the effectiveness of MTX and CsA.
Conclusions The efficacy, side effects, ease of administration (once weekly vs. twice daily treatment) and cost, it seems that treatment of psoriasis patient with systemic therapy using MTX is preferable than CsA even though, both have similar clinical efficacy.

Micromechanical Properties of Injection-Molded Starch–Wood Particle Composites
The micromechanical properties of injection molded starch–wood particle composites were investigated as a function of particle content and humidity conditions.
The composite materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. The microhardness
of the composites was shown to increase notably with the concentration of the wood particles. In addition,creep behavior under the indenter and temperature dependence
were evaluated in terms of the independent contribution of the starch matrix and the wood microparticles to the hardness value. The influence of drying time on the density
and weight uptake of the injection-molded composites was highlighted. The results revealed the role of the mechanism of water evaporation, showing that the dependence of water uptake and temperature was greater for the starch–wood composites than for the pure starch sample. Experiments performed during the drying process at 70°C indicated that
the wood in the starch composites did not prevent water loss from the samples.Peer reviewe
