Trajectories of charged particles trapped in Earth's magnetic field
I outline the theory of relativistic charged-particle motion in the
magnetosphere in a way suitable for undergraduate courses. I discuss particle
and guiding center motion, derive the three adiabatic invariants associated
with them, and present particle trajectories in a dipolar field. I provide
twelve computational exercises that can be used as classroom assignments or for
self-study. Two of the exercises, drift-shell bifurcation and Speiser orbits,
are adapted from active magnetospheric research. The Python code provided in
the supplement can be used to replicate the trajectories and can be easily
extended for different field geometries.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to American Journal of Physic
The self-consistent calculation of the edge states at quantum Hall effect (QHE) based Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI)
The spatial distribution of the incompressible edge states (IES) is obtained
for a geometry which is topologically equivalent to an electronic Mach-Zehnder
interferometer, taking into account the electron-electron interactions within a
Hartree type self-consistent model. The magnetic field dependence of these IES
is investigated and it is found that an interference pattern may be observed if
two IES merge or come very close, near the quantum point contacts. Our
calculations demonstrate that, being in a quantized Hall plateau does not
guarantee observing the interference behavior.Comment: EP2DS-17 Proceedings, 6 Pages, 2 Figure
Robust Rolling Horizon Optimisation Model for Offshore Wind Farm Installation Logistics
Our approach can be considered as both proactive and reactive, since uncertainty is considered both in creating the initial schedule and the schedule can be updated in real-time
PTPN22 gene polymorphism in Takayasu's arteritis
Objective. Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic, rare granulomatous panarteritis of unknown aetiology involving mainly the aorta and its major branches. In this study, genetic susceptibility to TA has been investigated by screening the functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of PTPN22 gene encoding the lymphoid-specific protein tyrosine phosphatase. Methods. Totally, 181 patients with TA and 177 healthy controls are genotyped by PCR-RFLP method for the SNP rs2476601 (A/G) of PTPN22 gene. Polymorphic region was amplified by PCR and digested with Xcm I enzyme. Results. Detected frequencies of heterozygous genotype (AG) were 5.1% (9/177) in control group and 3.8% (7/181) in TA group (P = 0.61, odds ratio: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.3, 2.0). No association with angiographic type, vascular involvement or prognosis of TA was observed either. Conclusion. The distribution of PTPN22 polymorphism did not reveal any association with TA in Turkey. © The Author 2008. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the British Society for Rheumatology. Marine fishes in the Black Sea: recent conservation status
A revised checklist of the fish fauna of the Black Sea is reported. This paper is the first attempt to present an actual Check List of the fishes in the Black Sea according to the data available in the Black Sea countries, as well as their current conservation status, enlisted in IUCN. The total number of the Black Sea fish species is 189. Concerning the conservation status only two species (1.06 %) are extinct (Acipenser nudiventris and A. sturio), 3.70 % are critically endangered, 16.40 % are vulnerable, 1.06% are endangered, for 10.58 % there is a lack of data, 26.46% has been classified in the category “Least concern”, 2.65 % are “Near threatened” and 38. 10% are “Not evaluated”
An application of Preference-Inspired Co-Evolutionary Algorithm to sectorization
Sectorization problems have significant challenges arising from the many objectives that must be optimised simultaneously. Several methods exist to deal with these many-objective optimisation problems, but each has its limitations. This paper analyses an application of Preference Inspired Co-Evolutionary Algorithms, with goal vectors (PICEA-g) to sectorization problems. The method is tested on instances of different size difficulty levels and various configurations for mutation rate and population number. The main purpose is to find the best configuration for PICEA-g to solve sectorization problems. Performancemetrics are used to evaluate these configurations regarding the solutions’ spread, convergence, and diversity in the solution space. Several test trials showed that big and medium-sized instances perform better with low mutation rates and large population sizes. The opposite is valid for the small size instances.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Dynamic sectorization-conceptualization and application
Sectorization is the division of a large area, territory or network into smaller parts considering one or more objectives. Dynamic sectorization deals with situations where it is convenient to discretize the time horizon in a certain number of periods. The decisions will not be isolated, and they will consider the past. The application areas are diverse and increasing due to uncertain times. This work proposes a conceptualization of dynamic sectorization and applies it to a distribution problem with variable demand. Furthermore, Genetic Algorithm is used to obtain solutions for the problem since it has several criteria; Analytical Hierarchy Process is used for the weighting procedure.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
