    Exploiting Anti-monotonicity of Multi-label Evaluation Measures for Inducing Multi-label Rules

    Exploiting dependencies between labels is considered to be crucial for multi-label classification. Rules are able to expose label dependencies such as implications, subsumptions or exclusions in a human-comprehensible and interpretable manner. However, the induction of rules with multiple labels in the head is particularly challenging, as the number of label combinations which must be taken into account for each rule grows exponentially with the number of available labels. To overcome this limitation, algorithms for exhaustive rule mining typically use properties such as anti-monotonicity or decomposability in order to prune the search space. In the present paper, we examine whether commonly used multi-label evaluation metrics satisfy these properties and therefore are suited to prune the search space for multi-label heads.Comment: Preprint version.     Dark energy survey year 1 results: The lensing imprint of cosmic voids on the cosmic microwave background

    Cosmic voids gravitationally lens the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, resulting in a distinct imprint on degree scales. We use the simulated CMB lensing convergence map from the Marenostrum Institut de Ciencias de l’Espai (MICE) N-body simulation to calibrate our detection strategy for a given void definition and galaxy tracer density. We then identify cosmic voids in Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 data and stack the Planck 2015 lensing convergence map on their locations, probing the consistency of simulated and observed void lensing signals. When fixing the shape of the stacked convergence profile to that calibrated from simulations, we find imprints at the 3σ significance level for various analysis choices. The best measurement strategies based on the MICE calibration process yield S/N ≈ 4 for DES Y1, and the best-fitting amplitude recovered from the data is consistent with expectations from MICE (A ≈ 1). Given these results as well as the agreement between them and N-body simulations, we conclude that the previously reported excess integrated Sachs–Wolfe (ISW) signal associated with cosmic voids in DES Y1 has no counterpart in the Planck CMB lensing map.This work has made use of CosmoHub (see Carretero et al. 2017).     Analytic models and forward scattering from accelerator to cosmic-ray energies

    Analytic models for hadron-hadron scattering are characterized by analytical parametrizations for the forward amplitudes and the use of dispersion relation techniques to study the total cross section σtot\sigma_{tot} and the ρ\rho parameter. In this paper we investigate four aspects related to the application of the model to pppp and pˉp\bar{p}p scattering, from accelerator to cosmic-ray energies: 1) the effect of different estimations for σtot\sigma_{tot} from cosmic-ray experiments; 2) the differences between individual and global (simultaneous) fits to σtot\sigma_{tot} and ρ\rho; 3) the role of the subtraction constant in the dispersion relations; 4) the effect of distinct asymptotic inputs from different analytic models. This is done by using as a framework the single Pomeron and the maximal Odderon parametrizations for the total cross section. Our main conclusions are the following: 1) Despite the small influence from different cosmic-ray estimations, the results allow us to extract an upper bound for the soft pomeron intercept: 1+ϵ=1.0941 + \epsilon = 1.094; 2) although global fits present good statistical results, in general, this procedure constrains the rise of σtot\sigma_{tot}; 3) the subtraction constant as a free parameter affects the fit results at both low and high energies; 4) independently of the cosmic-ray information used and the subtraction constant, global fits with the odderon parametrization predict that, above s70\sqrt s \approx 70 GeV, ρpp(s)\rho_{pp}(s) becomes greater than ρpˉp(s)\rho_{\bar{p}p}(s), and this result is in complete agreement with all the data presently available. In particular, we infer ρpp=0.134±0.005\rho_{pp} = 0.134 \pm 0.005 at s=200\sqrt s = 200 GeV and 0.151±0.0070.151 \pm 0.007 at 500 GeV (BNL RHIC energies).Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, aps-revtex, wording changes, corrected typos, to appear in Physical Review

    ESTIMACIÓN DE LOS COEFICIENTES DE INERCIA Y DE FRICCIÓN DE UN MOTOR DE CD (ESTIMATION OF INERTIA AND FRICTION COEFFICIENTS OF A DC MOTOR)

    ResumenEn este trabajo se presentan algunos modelos de fricción, y se destaca la importancia de los parámetros de fricción viscosa y de Coulomb, los cuales son necesarios para definir los distintos modelos que describen el comportamiento de la fricción en sistema mecánicos. Se describen los métodos de torque constante y entrada tipo rampa para estimar los coeficientes de fricción viscosa y de Coulomb, estos métodos se aplican en un motor de CD para obtener sus parámetros. A fin de comprobar que los parámetros estimados son los adecuados, se diseña y se aplica un control de velocidad, utilizando un controlador proporcional con compensación. La estimación de los parámetros y el control de velocidad del motor se realiza de forma experimental utilizando una plataforma de Arduino UNO en conjunto con la herramienta de Simulink de MatLab. Los resultados muestran que los coeficientes de fricción estimados son adecuados.Palabras Claves: control, estimación, fricción, motor de cd. AbstractIn this paper, some friction models are presented, highlighting the importance of viscous and Coulomb friction parameters, which are necessary to define the different models that describe the friction behavior in mechanical systems. The constant torque and ramp-type input methods for estimating viscous and Coulomb friction coefficients are described. These methods are applied in a DC motor, and their parameters are obtained. To verify that the estimated parameters are adequate, a speed control is designed and applied, using a proportional controller with compensation. Parameter estimation and motor speed control is performed experimentally using an Arduino UNO platform together with Simulink tool of MatLab.     Total Hadronic Cross Section Data and the Froissart-Martin Bound

    The energy dependence of the total hadronic cross section at high energies is investigated with focus on the recent experimental result by the TOTEM Collaboration at 7 TeV and the Froissart-Martin bound. On the basis of a class of analytical parametrization with the exponent γ\gamma in the leading logarithm contribution as a free parameter, different variants of fits to pppp and pˉp\bar{p}p total cross section data above 5 GeV are developed. Two ensembles are considered, the first comprising data up to 1.8 TeV, the second also including the data collected at 7 TeV. We shown that in all fit variants applied to the first ensemble the exponent is statistically consistent with γ\gamma = 2. Applied to the second ensemble, however, the same variants yield γ\gamma's above 2, a result already obtained in two other analysis, by U. Amaldi \textit{et al}. and by the UA4/2 Collaboration. As recently discussed by Ya. I. Azimov, this faster-than-squared-logarithm rise does not necessarily violate unitarity.     Cell identity and nucleo-mitochondrial genetic context modulate OXPHOS performance and determine somatic heteroplasmy dynamics

    Heteroplasmy, multiple variants of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the same cytoplasm, may be naturally generated by mutations but is counteracted by a genetic mtDNA bottleneck during oocyte development. Engineered heteroplasmic mice with nonpathological mtDNA variants reveal a nonrandom tissue-specific mtDNA segregation pattern, with few tissues that do not show segregation. The driving force for this dynamic complex pattern has remained unexplained for decades, challenging our understanding of this fundamental biological problem and hindering clinical planning for inherited diseases. Here, we demonstrate that the nonrandom mtDNA segregation is an intracellular process based on organelle selection. This cell type-specific decision arises jointly from the impact of mtDNA haplotypes on the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system and the cell metabolic requirements and is strongly sensitive to the nuclear context and to environmental cues

Procura-se encontrar na sua experiência elos de ligação explicativos sobre as motivações e os processos que os trazem para Portugal, assim como as expetativas e os projetos que comportam para os seus futuros e que incluem, ou não, este país. Temos em conta, especialmente, a forma como essa narrativa transporta sentidos identitários decorrentes das formas de relacionamento intercultural e político entre Portugal e Brasil e formas de cooperação implícitas, assim como mapas representacionais acerca dos lugares de eleição para desenvolvimento de carreiras científicas e académicas. A nossa pesquisa incide sobre as informações recolhidas através de um inquérito por questionário e entrevistas realizadas junto de estudantes e bolseiros brasileiros em Portugal.We present an exploratory study that investigated biographical stories of Brazilians who choose to continue their education or develop research in Portugal. We sought to find in their experiences explanatory links connecting the motivations and processes that bring them to Portugal, as well as the expectations and projects that they hold for the future, which may include, or not, this country. We take into account, particularly, the way this narrative carries senses of identity arising from the forms of intercultural and political relationship between Portugal and Brazil, as well as implicit forms of cooperation and representations about the places chosen for the development of scientific and academic careers. Our research draws on information collected through a survey based on questionnaires and interviews with Brazilian students and scholarship holders in Portugal.(undefined

    Pilot multi-omic analysis of human bile from benign and malignant biliary strictures: a machine-learning approach

    Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) and pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) may lead to the development of extrahepatic obstructive cholestasis. However, biliary stenoses can also be caused by benign conditions, and the identification of their etiology still remains a clinical challenge. We performed metabolomic and proteomic analyses of bile from patients with benign (n = 36) and malignant conditions, CCA (n = 36) or PDAC (n = 57), undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with the aim of characterizing bile composition in biliopancreatic disease and identifying biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of biliary strictures. Comprehensive analyses of lipids, bile acids and small molecules were carried out using mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR) in all patients. MS analysis of bile proteome was performed in five patients per group. We implemented artificial intelligence tools for the selection of biomarkers and algorithms with predictive capacity. Our machine-learning pipeline included the generation of synthetic data with properties of real data, the selection of potential biomarkers (metabolites or proteins) and their analysis with neural networks (NN). Selected biomarkers were then validated with real data.     The ASAS-SN Bright Supernova Catalog I: 2013-2014

    We present basic statistics for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) during its first year-and-a-half of operations, spanning 2013 and 2014. We also present the same information for all other bright (mV17m_V\leq17), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered from 2014 May 1 through the end of 2014, providing a comparison to the ASAS-SN sample starting from the point where ASAS-SN became operational in both hemispheres. In addition, we present collected redshifts and near-UV through IR magnitudes, where available, for all host galaxies of the bright supernovae in both samples. This work represents a comprehensive catalog of bright supernovae and their hosts from multiple professional and amateur sources, allowing for population studies that were not previously possible because the all-sky emphasis of ASAS-SN redresses most previously existing biases. In particular, ASAS-SN systematically finds supernovae closer to the centers of host galaxies than either other professional surveys or amateurs, a remarkable result given ASAS-SN's poorer angular resolution. This is the first of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts that will be released by the ASAS-SN team
