Energy Efficiency in Communications and Networks
The topic of "Energy Efficiency in Communications and Networks" attracts growing attention due to economical and environmental reasons. The amount of power consumed by information and communication technologies (ICT) is rapidly increasing, as well as the energy bill of service providers. According to a number of studies, ICT alone is responsible for a percentage which varies from 2% to 10% of the world power consumption. Thus, driving rising cost and sustainability concerns about the energy footprint of the IT infrastructure. Energy-efficiency is an aspect that until recently was only considered for battery driven devices. Today we see energy-efficiency becoming a pervasive issue that will need to be considered in all technology areas from device technology to systems management. This book is seeking to provide a compilation of novel research contributions on hardware design, architectures, protocols and algorithms that will improve the energy efficiency of communication devices and networks and lead to a more energy proportional technology infrastructure
Second year technical report on-board processing for future satellite communications systems
Advanced baseband and microwave switching techniques for large domestic communications satellites operating in the 30/20 GHz frequency bands are discussed. The nominal baseband processor throughput is one million packets per second (1.6 Gb/s) from one thousand T1 carrier rate customer premises terminals. A frequency reuse factor of sixteen is assumed by using 16 spot antenna beams with the same 100 MHz bandwidth per beam and a modulation with a one b/s per Hz bandwidth efficiency. Eight of the beams are fixed on major metropolitan areas and eight are scanning beams which periodically cover the remainder of the U.S. under dynamic control. User signals are regenerated (demodulated/remodulated) and message packages are reformatted on board. Frequency division multiple access and time division multiplex are employed on the uplinks and downlinks, respectively, for terminals within the coverage area and dwell interval of a scanning beam. Link establishment and packet routing protocols are defined. Also described is a detailed design of a separate 100 x 100 microwave switch capable of handling nonregenerated signals occupying the remaining 2.4 GHz bandwidth with 60 dB of isolation, at an estimated weight and power consumption of approximately 400 kg and 100 W, respectively
One way Doppler extractor. Volume 1: Vernier technique
A feasibility analysis, trade-offs, and implementation for a One Way Doppler Extraction system are discussed. A Doppler error analysis shows that quantization error is a primary source of Doppler measurement error. Several competing extraction techniques are compared and a Vernier technique is developed which obtains high Doppler resolution with low speed logic. Parameter trade-offs and sensitivities for the Vernier technique are analyzed, leading to a hardware design configuration. A detailed design, operation, and performance evaluation of the resulting breadboard model is presented which verifies the theoretical performance predictions. Performance tests have verified that the breadboard is capable of extracting Doppler, on an S-band signal, to an accuracy of less than 0.02 Hertz for a one second averaging period. This corresponds to a range rate error of no more than 3 millimeters per second
Design of adaptive analog filters for magnetic front-end read channels
CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor).
This thesis studies the design and behavior of continuous-time very-high-frequency
filters. The motivation of this work was the search for filtering solutions for the readchannel
in recording and reproduction of data on magnetic media systems, with costs and
consumption (total size less than 1 mm2 and consumption under 1mW/pole), lower than
the available circuits. Accordingly, as was done in this work, the rapid development of
microelectronics technology raised very significant efforts worldwide in order to investigate
new techniques for implementing such filters in monolithic integrated circuit, especially
in CMOS technology (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). We present
a comparative study on different hierarchical levels of the project, which led to the realization
and characterization of solutions with the desired characteristics.
In the first level, this study addresses the conceptual question of recording and
transmission of signal and the choice of good mathematical models for the processing of
information and minimization of error inherent in the approaches and in accordance with
the principles of the characterized physical devices.
The main work of this thesis is focused on the hierarchical levels of the architecture
of the read channel and the integrated circuit implementation of its main block - the filtering
block. At the architecture level of the read channel this work presents a comprehensive
study on existing methodologies of adaptation and signal recovery of data on
magnetic media. This project appears in the sequence of the proposed solution for a lowcost,
low consumption, low voltage, low complexity, using CMOS digital technology for
the performance of a DFE (Decision Feedback Equalization) based on the equalization of
the signal using integrated analog filters in continuous time.
At the project level of implementation of the filtering block and techniques for implementing
filters and its building components, it was concluded that the technique based
on transconductance circuits and capacitors, also known as gm-C filters is the most appropriate
for the implementation of very-high-frequency adaptive filters. We defined in
this lower level, two sub-levels of depth study for this thesis, namely: research and analysis
of optimal structures for the design of state-space filters, and the study of techniques for the design of transconductance cells in digital CMOS circuits for the implementation
of continuous time integrated analog filters.
Following this study, we present and compare two filtering structures operating in
the space of states, corresponding to two alternatives for achieving a realization of an
adaptive equalizer by the use of a continuous-time third order allpass filter, as part of a
read-channel for magnetic media devices.
As a constituent part of these filters, we present a technique for the realization of
transconductance circuits and for the implementation of linear capacitors using arrays of
MOSFET transistors for signal processing in very-high-frequency integrated circuits using
sub-micrometric CMOS technology. We present methods capable of automatic adjustment
and compensation for deviation errors in respect to the nominal values of the
components inherent to the tolerances of the fabrication process, for which we present
the simulation and experimental measurement results obtained.
Also as a result of this study, is the presentation of a circuit that provides a solution
for the control of the head positioning on recording/playback systems of data on magnetic
media. The proposed block is an adaptive first-order filter, based on the same transconductance
circuits and equalization techniques proposed and used in the implementation
of the adaptive filter for the equalization of the read channel.
This filter was designed and included in an integrated circuit (Jaguar) used to control
the positioning of the read-head done for ATMEL company in Colorado Springs, and
part of a commercial product used in removable hard drives fabricated in partnership with a Scottish company
Network Traffic Aware Smartphone Energy Savings
In today\u27s world of ubiquitous Smartphone use, extending the battery life has become an important issue. A significant contributor to battery drain is wireless networking. Common usage patterns expect Smartphones to maintain a constant Internet connection which exacerbates the problem.;Our research entitled A Network Traffic Approach to Smartphone Energy Savings focuses on extending Smartphone battery life by investigating how network traffic impacts power management of wireless devices. We explore 1) Real-time VoIP application energy savings by exploiting silence periods in conversation. WiFi is opportunistically placed into low power mode during Silence periods. 2.) The priority of Smartphone Application network traffic is used to modifiy WiFi radio power management using machine learning assisted prioritization. High priority network traffic is optimized for performance, consuming more energy while low priority network traffic is optimized for energy conservation. 3.) A hybrid multiple PHY, MAC layer approach to saving energy is also utilized. The Bluetooth assisted WiFi approach saves energy by combining high power, high throughput WiFi with low power, lower throughput Bluetooth. The switch between Bluetooth and WiFi is done opportunistically based upon the current data rate and health of the Bluetooth connection.;Our results show that application specific methods for wireless energy savings are very effective. We have demonstrated energy savings exceeding 50% in generic cases. With real-time VoIP applications we have shown upwards of 40% energy savings while maintaining good call quality. The hybrid multiple PHY approach saves more than 25% energy over existing solutions while attaining the capability of quickly adapting to changes in network traffic
Low-power CMOS digital-pixel Imagers for high-speed uncooled PbSe IR applications
This PhD dissertation describes the research and development of a new low-cost medium wavelength infrared MWIR monolithic imager technology
for high-speed uncooled industrial applications. It takes the baton on the latest technological advances in the field of vapour phase deposition (VPD)
PbSe-based medium wavelength IR (MWIR) detection accomplished by the industrial partner NIT S.L., adding fundamental knowledge on the investigation of novel VLSI analog and mixed-signal design techniques at circuit and system levels for the development of the readout integrated device attached to the detector.
The work supports on the hypothesis that, by the use of the preceding design techniques, current standard inexpensive CMOS technologies fulfill all
operational requirements of the VPD PbSe detector in terms of connectivity, reliability, functionality and scalability to integrate the device. The resulting monolithic PbSe-CMOS camera must consume very low power, operate at kHz frequencies, exhibit good uniformity and fit the CMOS read-out active pixels in the compact pitch of the focal plane, all while addressing the particular characteristics of the MWIR detector: high dark-to-signal ratios, large input parasitic capacitance values and remarkable mismatching in PbSe integration.
In order to achieve these demands, this thesis proposes null inter-pixel crosstalk vision sensor architectures based on a digital-only focal plane array (FPA) of configurable pixel sensors. Each digital pixel sensor (DPS) cell is equipped with fast communication modules, self-biasing, offset cancellation, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and fixed pattern noise (FPN) correction. In-pixel power consumption is minimized by the use of comprehensive MOSFET subthreshold operation.
The main aim is to potentiate the integration of PbSe-based infra-red (IR)-image sensing technologies so as to widen its use, not only in distinct scenarios, but also at different stages of PbSe-CMOS integration maturity. For this purpose, we posit to investigate a comprehensive set of functional blocks distributed in two parallel approaches:
• Frame-based “Smart” MWIR imaging based on new DPS circuit topologies with gain and offset FPN correction capabilities. This research
line exploits the detector pitch to offer fully-digital programmability at pixel level and complete functionality with input parasitic capacitance compensation and internal frame memory.
• Frame-free “Compact”-pitch MWIR vision based on a novel DPS lossless analog integrator and configurable temporal difference, combined with asynchronous communication protocols inside the focal plane. This strategy is conceived to allow extensive pitch compaction and readout speed increase by the suppression of in-pixel digital filtering, and the use of dynamic bandwidth allocation in each pixel of the FPA.
In order make the electrical validation of first prototypes independent of the expensive PbSe deposition processes at wafer level, investigation is extended as well to the development of affordable sensor emulation strategies and integrated test platforms specifically oriented to image read-out integrated circuits. DPS cells, imagers and test chips have been fabricated and characterized in standard 0.15μm 1P6M, 0.35μm 2P4M and 2.5μm 2P1M CMOS technologies, all as part of research projects with industrial partnership.
The research has led to the first high-speed uncooled frame-based IR quantum imager monolithically fabricated in a standard VLSI CMOS technology, and has given rise to the Tachyon series [1], a new line of commercial IR cameras used in real-time industrial, environmental and transportation control systems. The frame-free architectures investigated in this work represent a firm step forward to push further pixel pitch and system bandwidth up to the limits imposed by the evolving PbSe detector in future generations of the device. Postprint (published version
