The winner takes it all
We study competing first passage percolation on graphs generated by the
configuration model. At time 0, vertex 1 and vertex 2 are infected with the
type 1 and the type 2 infection, respectively, and an uninfected vertex then
becomes type 1 (2) infected at rate () times the number
of edges connecting it to a type 1 (2) infected neighbor. Our main result is
that, if the degree distribution is a power-law with exponent ,
then, as the number of vertices tends to infinity and with high probability,
one of the infection types will occupy all but a finite number of vertices.
Furthermore, which one of the infections wins is random and both infections
have a positive probability of winning regardless of the values of
and . The picture is similar with multiple starting points for the
infections
The Winner Takes It All
«Das Elektroauto – zu teuer – zu leistungsschwach», erklärte 2011 ein ETH-Professor im «Magazin» und fand den Verbrennungsmotor in absehbarer Zeit unschlagbar. Da war es aber schon zu spät: Der Unter-nehmer Elon Musk war dabei, die Auto- und einige andere Welten mit seinen Elektroautos auf den Kopf zu stellen. Seither läuft nichts mehr wie geplant
The Winner Takes It All, Maybe!
The importance of the science of water, commonly called “the hydrologic science,” is increasing day by day as water resources are depleting and becoming scarcer. These resources are either being polluted by human lifestyle, rendered unsuitable due to negligence and mismanagement, or their quantity is fast diminishing due to exhaustive extraction and consumption. With this state of affairs, in recent times, knowledge of the science of water has gained an impetus many times its original scale; and with that, its acquisition, expansion, research, advancement, and dissemination have become more important. With so many dimensions of hydrology available for exploration, research, and technological advancement, any contributory work will find its right place. This book will play its part in furthering the knowledge of the science of water and will prove useful reading for various cross-sections of academia, researchers, engineers, hydrologists, and all categories of water consumers
The winner takes it all? Multidimensional assessment of economic growth factors in Bundesländer
This paper seeks to offer a thorough assessment of current state of the play as well as developments taking place in 1989-2008 with respect to various determinants of economic growth in Germany. The primary aim is to evaluate the growth potential by constructing and consequently calculating the summary index encompassing various dimensions of economy. In order to take a holistic and comprehensive view on economic growth factors, conceptual framework of five modules encapsulating numerous factors and thus incorporating various growth aspects has been put forward. Competitiveness (production function), Sectors (output approach), Business cycle (expenditure approach), General economic condition (main macroindices) and Catalysts (residual - all other factors) are taken into account. Preliminary results confirm to some extent earlier studies pointing to existing West-East Germany's discrepancies. It seems particularly visible when taking into account elements of the first module and - key for long term growth - factors of the fifth unit.Artykuł stara się dokonać kompleksowej oceny obecnej sytuacji i zmian, jakie zaszły w latach 1991-2009 w zakresie różnych elementów wzrostu gospodarczego w niemieckich krajach związkowych. W tym celu zaproponowano pięciomodułowy schemat syntetyzujący najważniejsze czynniki i umożliwiający opracowanie cząstkowych, a następnie syntetycznego wskaźnika oceniającego potencjał wzrostu w poszczególnych regionach. Wyróżniono: 1) konkurencyjność, czyli ujęcie podażowe, nawiązujące do makroekonomicznej funkcji produkcji, 2) podział branżowy dotyczący udziału sektorów we wzroście gospodarczym, 3) koniunkturę, czyli ujęcie popytowe odwołujące się do kardynalnego równanie makroekonomii, 4) kondycję gospodarczą wyznaczoną kształtowaniem się głównych wskaźników makroekonomicznych oraz 5) klimat gospodarczy obejmujący pozostałe potencjalne determinanty wzrostu gospodarczego. Schemat stanowiący eklektyczne podejście do czynników wzrostu jest próbą wypełnienia luki między wysoce zmatematyzowanym modelowym i abstrakcyjnym ujęciem kwestii wzrostu, jaki przeważa w literaturze akademickiej, a podejściem praktycznym obecnym w prasie biznesowej, czy bieżących analizach politycznych. Otrzymane wyniki wskazują, że najwyższy potencjał wzrostu gospodarczego osiągnęły Bawaria, Badenia Wirtembergia i Nadrenia Północna Westfalia; najsłabszy - Berlin, Brema, Saksonia Anhalt i Meklemburgia Pomorze Przednie.
The economics of social networks : the winner takes it all?
We look at the economics of social networks. Key economic features of these are positive network effects, giving rise to positive feedback effects that may lead to a winner-takes-it-all market. Social networks’ revenues are collected from online advertising; social networks thus constitute two-sided markets. Two-sided markets with ad-financing enhance the winner-takes-it-all effect. However, for many young people, social networks are parts of their image. They may want to be where the right people are, not where all people are. Social networks are virtual communities, places to meet other people. As for offline communities, e.g., nightclubs, it may be important to be a part of a new and trendy community. This may give rise to negative network effects – so-called snob effects; a consumer wants an exclusive or unique product or service. Such a night-club-effect opposes the positive network effects, and may thus limit the winner-takes-it all feature of social networks, suggesting that a ‘Facebook-monopoly’ is not necessarily the most likely scenario
Traducción de canciones. Un estudio de caso: The Winner Takes It All (inglés-castellano)
Treball Final de Grau. Grau en Traducció i Interpretació. Codi: TI0983.
The Winner Takes It All (inglés-castellano).

The winner takes it all: enhancing the quality and impact of library workshops
Adam Edwards and Vanessa Hill will present on their work changing their teaching methods over the past two years and will alllow delegates to try out some of the games and activities they have developed. The presentation will cover the issues they faced in changing their pedagogy and their collaboration with academic and academic writing colleagues to facilitate the changes made. They will then discuss the inspiration they gained from the work of others such as Markless and Boyle and how this influenced their choices of teaching methods. The solutions they have come up with which will include practical demonstration of these games and activities and finally the impact this has had on the students they have taught, presenting the results of a survey they undertook in 2012. They will then reflect on the lessons learned and their plans for the future
Cambodia: the winner takes it all: 2018 elections set country firmly on path towards authoritarianism
There was never any doubt who would win Cambodia’s 2018 elections, with electoral politics skewed to favour Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). The CPP has already declared victory, claiming 76 per cent of votes and all of the 125 parliamentary seats. The elections were condemned as a “sham” by the opposition after the dissolution of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), the imprisonment of CNRP leader Kem Sokha, and a crackdown on civil society and the media. These events mark a watershed in Cambodian politics, indicating the establishment of a single-party autocracy backed by China. (Autorenreferat
