    The CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey: I. Survey overview and T0002 release sample

    AIMS: We present data from the CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S). Due to the unsurpassed combined depth, area and image quality of the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey it is becoming possible to uncover a large, statistically well-defined sample of strong gravitational lenses which spans the dark halo mass spectrum predicted by the concordance model from galaxy to cluster haloes. METHODS: We describe the development of several automated procedures to find strong lenses of various mass regimes in CFHTLS images. RESULTS: The preliminary sample of about 40 strong lensing candidates discovered in the CFHTLS T0002 release, covering an effective field of view of 28 deg2^2 is presented. These strong lensing systems were discovered using an automated search and consist mainly of gravitational arc systems with splitting angles between 2 and 15 arcsec. This sample shows for the first time that it is possible to uncover a large population of strong lenses from galaxy groups with typical halo masses of about 1013h1M10^{13}h^{-1}M_\odot. We discuss the future evolution of the SL2S project and its main scientific aims for the next 3 years, in particular our observational strategy to extract the hundreds of gravitational rings also present in these fields.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, A&A in pres

    Category Theory and Model-Driven Engineering: From Formal Semantics to Design Patterns and Beyond

    There is a hidden intrigue in the title. CT is one of the most abstract mathematical disciplines, sometimes nicknamed "abstract nonsense". MDE is a recent trend in software development, industrially supported by standards, tools, and the status of a new "silver bullet". Surprisingly, categorical patterns turn out to be directly applicable to mathematical modeling of structures appearing in everyday MDE practice. Model merging, transformation, synchronization, and other important model management scenarios can be seen as executions of categorical specifications. Moreover, the paper aims to elucidate a claim that relationships between CT and MDE are more complex and richer than is normally assumed for "applied mathematics". CT provides a toolbox of design patterns and structural principles of real practical value for MDE. We will present examples of how an elementary categorical arrangement of a model management scenario reveals deficiencies in the architecture of modern tools automating the scenario.Comment: In Proceedings ACCAT 2012, arXiv:1208.430

    Search for Rapid Changes in the Visible-Light Corona during the 21 June 2001 Total Solar Eclipse

    Some 8000 images obtained with the SECIS fast-frame CCD camera instrument located at Lusaka, Zambia, during the total eclipse of 21 June 2001 have been analyzed to search for short-period oscillations in intensity that could be a signature of solar coronal heating mechanisms by MHD wave dissipation. Images were taken in white- light and Fe XIV green-line (5303 A) channels over 205 seconds (frame rate 39 s-1), approximately the length of eclipse totality at this location, with a pixel size of four arcseconds square. The data are of considerably better quality than were obtained during the 11 August 1999 total eclipse, observed by us (Rudawy et al.: Astron. Astrophys. 416, 1179, 2004), in that the images are much better exposed and enhancements in the drive system of the heliostat used gave a much improved image stability. Classical Fourier and wavelet techniques have been used to analyze the emission at 29518 locations, of which 10714 had emission at reasonably high levels, searching for periodic fluctuations with periods in the range 0.1-17 seconds (frequencies 0.06-10 Hz). While a number of possible periodicities were apparent in the wavelet analysis, none of the spatially and time-limited periodicities in the local brightness curves was found to be physically important. This implies that the pervasive Alfven wave-like phenomena (Tomczyk et al.: Science 317, 1192, 2007) using polarimetric observations with the CoMP instrument do not give rise to significant oscillatory intensity fluctuations.Comment: Accepted by Solar Physics; 16 figure

    A concentrator system for BI-CPVT with static linear Fresnel lenses

    A greenhouse with Fresnel lenses in the south facing roof and a receiver for concentrated Photovoltaic with water cooling (CPVT system) will result in electrical and thermal energy output from the solar energy excess entering a greenhouse. The PV system converts about half of the direct radiation into heat and electricity. During periods with direct radiation this will significantly reduce the heat load on the greenhouse For an optimal performance the roof elements must be asymmetric with a steep inclination at the north side (the exact angle of course depends on the latitude of the building site). The Fresnel lens structure is best oriented in upwards direction. In the current design, two lenses are placed in the inner space of a double glass. This prevents pollution and condensation on the lenses. By the upward facing of the lens structure, the focus quality is preserved over a much broader range of angles of incidence compared to a lens with downward facing structures. Each PMMA lens with a size of 1.20m x 1.52m is composed of 12 ‘tiles’ for easy production. The focal distance of the lens is 1,875m and the geometrical concentration factor is 50×. This means that in most cases the focus line is thinner than 3 cm. The performance of the lens with respect to the shape of the focal area and the position of the focal line has been analyzed with ray tracing techniques. From this analyses and by the development of a smart tracking system only two motors can bring the receivers in the required positions. One motor controls the distance between lens and receiver and the other controls the translocation of the receivers parallel to the lens. The second conclusion was that the positions of the focal line are within the bounds of the greenhouse construction for almost the whole year. Only in winter, in the early morning and at the end of the day, the focal line will be unreachable. The light sum is very stable in the greenhouse compared with the light sum outside. The 480 m2 greenhouse, with the LCPVT system based on Static Fresnel lenses and a 12 m CPVT-module and a 200 m CT-module, is designed by Bode Project Engineering and constructed by Technokas in Bleiswijk the Netherlands. An electrical power of 37W/(m2 greenhouse) is measured at an incoming global radiation of 870 W/m² (on a horizontal plane). The fraction collected thermal yield is about 20% of the total incident direct radiation

    Qatar-2: A K dwarf orbited by a transiting hot Jupiter and a more massive companion in an outer orbit

    We report the discovery and initial characterization of Qatar-2b, a hot Jupiter transiting a V = 13.3 mag K dwarf in a circular orbit with a short period, P_ b = 1.34 days. The mass and radius of Qatar-2b are M_p = 2.49 M_j and R_p = 1.14 R_j, respectively. Radial-velocity monitoring of Qatar-2 over a span of 153 days revealed the presence of a second companion in an outer orbit. The Systemic Console yielded plausible orbits for the outer companion, with periods on the order of a year and a companion mass of at least several M_j. Thus Qatar-2 joins the short but growing list of systems with a transiting hot Jupiter and an outer companion with a much longer period. This system architecture is in sharp contrast to that found by Kepler for multi-transiting systems, which are dominated by objects smaller than Neptune, usually with tightly spaced orbits that must be nearly coplanar

    KiDS-i-800: Comparing weak gravitational lensing measurements in same-sky surveys

    We present a weak gravitational lensing analysis of 815 square degree of ii-band imaging from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-ii-800). In contrast to the deep rr-band observations, which take priority during excellent seeing conditions and form the primary KiDS dataset (KiDS-rr-450), the complementary yet shallower KiDS-ii-800 spans a wide range of observing conditions. The overlapping KiDS-ii-800 and KiDS-rr-450 imaging therefore provides a unique opportunity to assess the robustness of weak lensing measurements. In our analysis, we introduce two new `null' tests. The `nulled' two-point shear correlation function uses a matched catalogue to show that the calibrated KiDS-ii-800 and KiDS-rr-450 shear measurements agree at the level of 1±41 \pm 4\%. We use five galaxy lens samples to determine a `nulled' galaxy-galaxy lensing signal from the full KiDS-ii-800 and KiDS-rr-450 surveys and find that the measurements agree to 7±57 \pm 5\% when the KiDS-ii-800 source redshift distribution is calibrated using either spectroscopic redshifts, or the 30-band photometric redshifts from the COSMOS survey.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures.
