    Adaptive and intelligent navigation of autonomous planetary rovers - A survey

    The application of robotics and autonomous systems in space has increased dramatically. The ongoing Mars rover mission involving the Curiosity rover, along with the success of its predecessors, is a key milestone that showcases the existing capabilities of robotic technology. Nevertheless, there has still been a heavy reliance on human tele-operators to drive these systems. Reducing the reliance on human experts for navigational tasks on Mars remains a major challenge due to the harsh and complex nature of the Martian terrains. The development of a truly autonomous rover system with the capability to be effectively navigated in such environments requires intelligent and adaptive methods fitting for a system with limited resources. This paper surveys a representative selection of work applicable to autonomous planetary rover navigation, discussing some ongoing challenges and promising future research directions from the perspectives of the authors

    Navigational Path Analysis of Mobile Robot in Various Environments

    This dissertation describes work in the area of an autonomous mobile robot. The objective is navigation of mobile robot in a real world dynamic environment avoiding structured and unstructured obstacles either they are static or dynamic. The shapes and position of obstacles are not known to robot prior to navigation. The mobile robot has sensory recognition of specific objects in the environments. This sensory-information provides local information of robots immediate surroundings to its controllers. The information is dealt intelligently by the robot to reach the global objective (the target). Navigational paths as well as time taken during navigation by the mobile robot can be expressed as an optimisation problem and thus can be analyzed and solved using AI techniques. The optimisation of path as well as time taken is based on the kinematic stability and the intelligence of the robot controller. A successful way of structuring the navigation task deals with the issues of individual behaviour design and action coordination of the behaviours. The navigation objective is addressed using fuzzy logic, neural network, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system and different other AI technique.The research also addresses distributed autonomous systems using multiple robot

    An efficient local binary pattern based plantar pressure optical sensor image classification using convolutional neural networks

    The objective of this study was to design and produce highly comfortable shoe products guided by a plantar pressure imaging data-set. Previous studies have focused on the geometric measurement on the size of the plantar, while in this research a plantar pressure optical imaging data-set based classification technology has been developed. In this paper, an improved local binary pattern (LBP) algorithm is used to extract texture-based features and recognize patterns from the data-set. A calculating model of plantar pressure imaging feature area is established subsequently. The data-set is classified by a neural network to guide the generation of various shoe-last surfaces. Firstly, the local binary mode is improved to adapt to the pressure imaging data-set, and the texture-based feature calculation is fully used to accurately generate the feature point set; hereafter, the plantar pressure imaging feature point set is then used to guide the design of last free surface forming. In the presented experiments of plantar imaging, multi-dimensional texture-based features and improved LBP features have been found by a convolution neural network (CNN), and compared with a 21-input-3-output two-layer perceptual neural network. Three feet types are investigated in the experiment, being flatfoot (F) referring to the lack of a normal arch, or arch collapse, Talipes Equinovarus (TE), being the front part of the foot is adduction, calcaneus varus, plantar flexion, or Achilles tendon contracture and Normal (N). This research has achieved an 82% accuracy rate with 10 hidden-layers CNN of rotation invariance LBP (RI-LBP) algorithm using 21 texture-based features by comparing other deep learning methods presented in the literature

    Design and Development of an Automated Mobile Manipulator for Industrial Applications

    This thesis presents the modeling, control and coordination of an automated mobile manipulator. A mobile manipulator in this investigation consists of a robotic manipulator and a mobile platform resulting in a hybrid mechanism that includes a mobile platform for locomotion and a manipulator arm for manipulation. The structural complexity of a mobile manipulator is the main challenging issue because it includes several problems like adapting a manipulator and a redundancy mobile platform at non-holonomic constraints. The objective of the thesis is to fabricate an automated mobile manipulator and develop control algorithms that effectively coordinate the arm manipulation and mobility of mobile platform. The research work starts with deriving the motion equations of mobile manipulators. The derivation introduced here makes use of motion equations of robot manipulators and mobile platforms separately, and then integrated them as one entity. The kinematic analysis is performed in two ways namely forward & inverse kinematics. The motion analysis is performed for various WMPs such as, Omnidirectional WMP, Differential three WMP, Three wheeled omni-steer WMP, Tricycle WMP and Two steer WMP. From the obtained motion analysis results, Differential three WMP is chosen as the mobile platform for the developed mobile manipulator. Later motion analysis is carried out for 4-axis articulated arm. Danvit-Hartenberg representation is implemented to perform forward kinematic analysis. Because of this representation, one can easily understand the kinematic equation for a robotic arm. From the obtained arm equation, Inverse kinematic model for the 4-axis robotic manipulator is developed. Motion planning of an intelligent mobile robot is one of the most vital issues in the field of robotics, which includes the generation of optimal collision free trajectories within its work space and finally reaches its target position. For solving this problem, two evolutionary algorithms namely Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Artificial Immune System (AIS) are introduced to move the mobile platform in intelligent manner. The developed algorithms are effective in avoiding obstacles, trap situations and generating optimal paths within its unknown environments. Once the robot reaches its goal (within the work space of the manipulator), the manipulator will generate its trajectories according to task assigned by the user. Simulation analyses are performed using MATLAB-2010 in order to validate the feasibility of the developed methodologies in various unknown environments. Additionally, experiments are carried out on an automated mobile manipulator. ATmega16 Microcontrollers are used to enable the entire robot system movement in desired trajectories by means of robot interface application program. The control program is developed in robot software (Keil) to control the mobile manipulator servomotors via a serial connection through a personal computer. To support the proposed control algorithms both simulation and experimental results are presented. Moreover, validation of the developed methodologies has been made with the ER-400 mobile platform

    A graph-theory-based C-space path planner for mobile robotic manipulators in close-proximity environments

    In this thesis a novel guidance method for a 3-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator arm in 3 dimensions for Improvised Explosive Device (IED) disposal has been developed. The work carried out in this thesis combines existing methods to develop a technique that delivers advantages taken from several other guidance techniques. These features are necessary for the IED disposal application. The work carried out in this thesis includes kinematic and dynamic modelling of robotic manipulators, T-space to C-space conversion, and path generation using Graph Theory to produce a guidance technique which can plan a safe path through a complex unknown environment. The method improves upon advantages given by other techniques in that it produces a suitable path in 3-dimensions in close-proximity environments in real time with no a priori knowledge of the environment, a necessary precursor to the application of this technique to IED disposal missions. To solve the problem of path planning, the thesis derives the kinematics and dynamics of a robotic arm in order to convert the Euclidean coordinates of measured environment data into C-space. Each dimension in C-space is one control input of the arm. The Euclidean start and end locations of the manipulator end effector are translated into C-space. A three-dimensional path is generated between them using Dijkstra’s Algorithm. The technique allows for a single path to be generated to guide the entire arm through the environment, rather than multiple paths to guide each component through the environment. The robotic arm parameters are modelled as a quasi-linear parameter varying system. As such it requires gain scheduling control, thus allowing compensation of the non-linearities in the system. A Genetic Algorithm is applied to tune a set of PID controllers for the dynamic model of the manipulator arm so that the generated path can then be followed using a conventional path-following algorithm. The technique proposed in this thesis is validated using numerical simulations in order to determine its advantages and limitations

    Effort reduction and collision avoidance for powered wheelchairs : SCAD assistive mobility system

    The new research described in this dissertation created systems and methods to assist wheelchair users and provide them with new realistic and interesting driving opportunities. The work also created and applied novel effort reduction and collision avoidance systems and some new electronic interactive devices. A Scanning Collision Avoidance Device (SCAD) was created that attached to standard powered wheelchairs to help prevent children from driving into things. Initially, mechanical bumpers were used but they made many wheelchairs unwieldy, so a novel system that rotated a single ultra-sonic transducer was created. The SCAD provided wheelchair guidance and assisted with steering. Optical side object detectors were included to cover blind spots and also assist with doorway navigation. A steering lockout mode was also included for training, which stopped the wheelchair from driving towards a detected object. Some drivers did not have sufficient manual dexterity to operate a reverse control. A reverse turn manoeuvring mode was added that applied a sequential reverse and turn function, enabling a driver to escape from a confined situation by operating a single turn control. A new generation of Proportional SCAD was created that operated with proportional control inputs rather than switches and new systems were created to reduce veer, including effort reduction systems. New variable switches were created that provided variable speed control in place of standard digital switches and all that research reduced the number of control actions required by a driver. Finally, some new systems were created to motivate individuals to try new activities. These included a track guided train and an adventure playground that including new interactive systems. The research was initially inspired by the needs of young people at Chailey Heritage, the novel systems provided new and more autonomous driving opportunities for many powered wheelchair users in less structured environments.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Intelligentes autonomes Roboterhandeln in Alltagsumgebungen erfordert den Einsatz von 3D-Karten, in denen Objekte klassifiziert sind. 3D-Karten sind u.a. zur Steuerung notwendig, damit der Roboter komplexen Hindernissen ausweichen und sich mit 6 Freiheitsgraden (x-, y-, z-Position, Nick-, Gier-, und Rollwinkel) lokalisieren kann. Soll der Roboter mit seiner Umgebung interagieren, wird Interpretation unumgänglich. Über erkannte Objekte kann der Roboter Schlussfolgerungen ziehen, sein Wissen wird inspizier- und kommunizierbar. Aus diesen Gründen ist die automatische und schnelle semantische 3D-Modellierung der Umgebung eine wichtige Fragestellung in der Robotik. 3D-Laserscanner sind eine junge Technologie, die die Erfassung räumlicher Daten revolutioniert und Robotern das dreidimensionale Abtasten von Objekten möglich macht. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht und evaluiert mit Hilfe eines 3D-Laserscanners und des mobilen Roboters Kurt3D die zur automatischen semantischen 3D-Kartenerstellung notwendigen Algorithmen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Aufgabe, 3D-Scans in einem globalen Koordinatensystem zu registrieren. Korrekte, global konsistente Modelle entstehen durch einen 6D-SLAM Algorithmus. Hierbei werden 6 Freiheitsgrade in der Roboterpose berücksichtigt, geschlossene Kreise erkannt und der globale Fehler minimiert. Die Basis des 6D-SLAM ist ein sehr schneller ICP-Algorithmus. Im zweiten Teil geht es darum, die Punktmodelle mit Semantik zu versehen. Dazu werden 3D-Flächen in einer digitalisierten 3D-Szene detektiert und interpretiert. Anschließend sucht ein effizienter Algorithmus nach Objekten und bestimmt deren Pose, ebenfalls mit 6 Freiheitsgraden. Schließlich wird der in den zahlreichen Experimenten verwendete, mobile Roboter Kurt3D vorgestellt.Semantic three dimensional maps for autonomous mobile robots Intelligent autonomous acting in unstructured environments requires 3D maps with labelled 3D objects. 3D maps are necessary to avoid collisions with complex obstacles and to self localize in six degrees of freedom (x-, y-, z-position, roll, yaw and pitch angle). Meaning becomes inevitable, if the robot has to interact with its environment. The robot is then able to reason about the objects; its knowledge becomes inspectable and communicable. These arguments lead to requiring automatic and fast semantic environment modelling in robotics. A revolutionary method for gaging environments are 3D scanners, which enable robots to scan objects in a non-contact way in three dimensions. The presented work examines and evaluates the algorithms needed for automatic semantic 3D map building using a 3D laser range finder and the mobile robot Kurt3D. The first part deals with the task to register 3D scans in a common coordinate system. Correct, globally consistent models result from a 6D SLAM algorithm. Hereby 6 degrees of freedom of the robot pose are considered, closed-loops are detected and the global error is minimized. 6D SLAM is based on a very fast ICP algorithm. In the second part semantic descriptions are derived from the point model. For that purpose 3D planes are detected and interpreted in the digitalized 3D scene. After that an efficient algorithm detects objects and estimates their pose with 6 degrees of freedom, too. Finally, the mobile robot Kurt3D, that was used in numerous experiments is presented
