    Digital implementation of the cellular sensor-computers

    Two different kinds of cellular sensor-processor architectures are used nowadays in various applications. The first is the traditional sensor-processor architecture, where the sensor and the processor arrays are mapped into each other. The second is the foveal architecture, in which a small active fovea is navigating in a large sensor array. This second architecture is introduced and compared here. Both of these architectures can be implemented with analog and digital processor arrays. The efficiency of the different implementation types, depending on the used CMOS technology, is analyzed. It turned out, that the finer the technology is, the better to use digital implementation rather than analog

    STUDY OF FULLY-INTEGRATED LOW-DROPOUT REGULATORS

    Department of Electrical EngineeringThis thesis focuses on the introduction of fully-integrated low-dropout regulators (LDOs). Recently, for the mobile and internet-of-things applications, the level of integration is getting higher. LDOs get popular in integrated circuit design including functions such as reducing switching ripples from high-efficiency regulators, cancelling spurs from other loads, and giving different supply voltages to loads. In accordance with load applications, choosing proper LDOs is important. LDOs can be classified by the types of power MOSEFT, the topologies of error amplifier, and the locations of dominant pole. Analog loads such as voltage-controlled oscillators and analog-to-digital converters need LDOs that have high power-supply-rejection-ratio (PSRR), high accuracy, and low noise. Digital loads such as DRAM and CPU need fast transient response, a wide range of load current providable LDOs. As an example, we present the design procedure of a fully-integrated LDO that obtains the desired PSRR. In analog LDOs, we discuss advanced techniques such as local positive feedback loop and zero path that can improve stability and PSRR performance. In digital LDOs, the techniques to improve transient response are introduced. In analog-digital hybrid LDOs, to achieve both fast transient and high PSRR performance in a fully-integrated chip, how to optimally combine analog and digital LDOs is considered based on the characteristics of each LDO type.     Robust Circuit Design for Low-Voltage VLSI.

    Voltage scaling is an effective way to reduce the overall power consumption, but the major challenges in low voltage operations include performance degradation and reliability issues due to PVT variations. This dissertation discusses three key circuit components that are critical in low-voltage VLSI. Level converters must be a reliable interface between two voltage domains, but the reduced on/off-current ratio makes it extremely difficult to achieve robust conversions at low voltages. Two static designs are proposed: LC2 adopts a novel pulsed-operation and modulates its pull-up strength depending on its state. A 3-sigma robustness is guaranteed using a current margin plot; SLC inherently reduces the contention by diode-insertion. Improvements in performance, power, and robustness are measured from 130nm CMOS test chips. SRAM is a major bottleneck in voltage-scaling due to its inherent ratioed-bitcell design. The proposed 7T SRAM alleviates the area overhead incurred by 8T bitcells and provides robust operation down to 0.32V in 180nm CMOS test chips with 3.35fW/bit leakage. Auto-Shut-Off provides a 6.8x READ energy reduction, and its innate Quasi-Static READ has been demonstrated which shows a much improved READ error rate. A use of PMOS Pass-Gate improves the half-select robustness by directly modulating the device strength through bitline voltage. Clocked sequential elements, flip-flops in short, are ubiquitous in today’s digital systems. The proposed S2CFF is static, single-phase, contention-free, and has the same number of devices as in TGFF. It shows a 40% power reduction as well as robust low-voltage operations in fabricated 45nm SOI test chips. Its simple hold-time path and the 3.4x improvement in 3-sigma hold-time is presented.     Design, analysis and implementation of voltage sensor for power-constrained systems

    PhD ThesisThanks to an extensive effort by the global research community, the electronic technology has significantly matured over the last decade. This technology has enabled certain operations which humans could not otherwise easily perform. For instance, electronic systems can be used to perform sensing, monitoring and even control operations in environments such as outer space, underground, under the sea or even inside the human body. The main difficulty for electronics operating in these environments is access to a reliable and permanent source of energy. Using batteries as the immediate solution for this problem has helped to provide energy for limited periods of time; however, regular maintenance and replacement are required. Consequently, battery solutions fail wherever replacing them is not possible or operation for long periods is needed. For such cases, researchers have proposed harvesting ambient energy and converting it into an electrical form. An important issue with energy harvesters is that their operation and output power depend critically on the amount of energy they receive and because ambient energy often tends to be sporadic in nature, energy harvesters cannot produce stable or fixed levels of power all of the time. Therefore, electronic devices powered in this way must be capable of adapting their operation to the energy status of the harvester. To achieve this, information on the energy available for use is needed. This can be provided by a sensor capable of measuring voltage. However, stable and fixed voltage and time references are a prerequisite of most traditional voltage measurement devices, but these generally do not exist in energy harvesting environments. A further challenge is that such a sensor also needs to be powered by the energy harvester’s unstable voltage. In this thesis, the design of a reference-free voltage sensor, which can operate with a varying voltage source, is provided based on the capture of a portion of the total energy which is directly related to II the energy being sensed. This energy is then used to power a computation which quantifies captured energy over time, with the information directly generated as digital code. The sensor was fabricated in the 180 nm technology node and successfully tested by performing voltage measurements over the range 1.8 V to 0.8 V

    Common rail is one of the most important components in a diesel and gasoline direct injection system. It features a high-pressure (100 bar) fuel rail feeding solenoid valves, as opposed to a low-pressure fuel pump feeding unit injectors. Third-generation common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for increased precision, with fuel pressures up to 2,500 bar. The purpose of this review paper is to investigate the technology and research in fuel injectors common rail system. This review paper focuses on component of common rail injection system, pioneer of common rail injection, characteristics of common rail injection system, method to reduce smoke and NOx emission simultaneously and impact of common rail injection system. Based on our research, it can be concluded that common rail injection gives many benefit such as good for the engine performance, safe to use, and for to reduce the emission of the vehicle. Fuel injection common rail system is the modern technology that must be developed. Nowadays, our earth is polluting by vehicle output such as smoke. If the common rail system is developed, it can reduce the pollution and keep our atmosphere clean and safe

    Multiband Spectrum Access: Great Promises for Future Cognitive Radio Networks

    Cognitive radio has been widely considered as one of the prominent solutions to tackle the spectrum scarcity. While the majority of existing research has focused on single-band cognitive radio, multiband cognitive radio represents great promises towards implementing efficient cognitive networks compared to single-based networks. Multiband cognitive radio networks (MB-CRNs) are expected to significantly enhance the network's throughput and provide better channel maintenance by reducing handoff frequency. Nevertheless, the wideband front-end and the multiband spectrum access impose a number of challenges yet to overcome. This paper provides an in-depth analysis on the recent advancements in multiband spectrum sensing techniques, their limitations, and possible future directions to improve them. We study cooperative communications for MB-CRNs to tackle a fundamental limit on diversity and sampling. We also investigate several limits and tradeoffs of various design parameters for MB-CRNs.
