    MOSAIC roadmap for mobile collaborative work related to health and wellbeing.

    The objective of the MOSAIC project is to accelerate innovation in Mobile Worker Support Environments. For that purpose MOSAIC develops visions and illustrative scenarios for future collaborative workspaces involving mobile and location-aware working. Analysis of the scenarios is input to the process of road mapping with the purpose of developing strategies for R&D leading to deployment of innovative mobile work technologies and applications across different domains. One of the application domains where MOSAIC is active is health and wellbeing. This paper builds on another paper submitted to this same conference, which presents and discusses health care and wellbeing specific scenarios. The aim is to present an early form of a roadmap for validation

    Seven HCI Grand Challenges

    This article aims to investigate the Grand Challenges which arise in the current and emerging landscape of rapid technological evolution towards more intelligent interactive technologies, coupled with increased and widened societal needs, as well as individual and collective expectations that HCI, as a discipline, is called upon to address. A perspective oriented to humane and social values is adopted, formulating the challenges in terms of the impact of emerging intelligent interactive technologies on human life both at the individual and societal levels. Seven Grand Challenges are identified and presented in this article: Human-Technology Symbiosis; Human-Environment Interactions; Ethics, Privacy and Security; Well-being, Health and Eudaimonia; Accessibility and Universal Access; Learning and Creativity; and Social Organization and Democracy. Although not exhaustive, they summarize the views and research priorities of an international interdisciplinary group of experts, reflecting different scientific perspectives, methodological approaches and application domains. Each identified Grand Challenge is analyzed in terms of: concept and problem definition; main research issues involved and state of the art; and associated emerging requirements

    Moving on from Weiser's Vision of Calm Computing: engaging UbiComp experiences

    A motivation behind much UbiComp research has been to make our lives convenient, comfortable and informed, following in the footsteps of Weiser's calm computing vision. Three themes that have dominated are context awareness, ambient intelligence and monitoring/tracking. While these avenues of research have been fruitful their accomplishments do not match up to anything like Weiser's world. This paper discusses why this is so and argues that is time for a change of direction in the field. An alternative agenda is outlined that focuses on engaging rather than calming people. Humans are very resourceful at exploiting their environments and extending their capabilities using existing strategies and tools. I describe how pervasive technologies can be added to the mix, outlining three areas of practice where there is much potential for professionals and laypeople alike to combine, adapt and use them in creative and constructive ways

    Anticipatory Mobile Computing: A Survey of the State of the Art and Research Challenges

    Today's mobile phones are far from mere communication devices they were ten years ago. Equipped with sophisticated sensors and advanced computing hardware, phones can be used to infer users' location, activity, social setting and more. As devices become increasingly intelligent, their capabilities evolve beyond inferring context to predicting it, and then reasoning and acting upon the predicted context. This article provides an overview of the current state of the art in mobile sensing and context prediction paving the way for full-fledged anticipatory mobile computing. We present a survey of phenomena that mobile phones can infer and predict, and offer a description of machine learning techniques used for such predictions. We then discuss proactive decision making and decision delivery via the user-device feedback loop. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of anticipatory mobile computing.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figure

    Supporting decision making process with "Ideal" software agents: what do business executives want?

    According to Simon’s (1977) decision making theory, intelligence is the first and most important phase in the decision making process. With the escalation of information resources available to business executives, it is becoming imperative to explore the potential and challenges of using agent-based systems to support the intelligence phase of decision-making. This research examines UK executives’ perceptions of using agent-based support systems and the criteria for design and development of their “ideal” intelligent software agents. The study adopted an inductive approach using focus groups to generate a preliminary set of design criteria of “ideal” agents. It then followed a deductive approach using semi-structured interviews to validate and enhance the criteria. This qualitative research has generated unique insights into executives’ perceptions of the design and use of agent-based support systems. The systematic content analysis of qualitative data led to the proposal and validation of design criteria at three levels. The findings revealed the most desirable criteria for agent based support systems from the end users’ point view. The design criteria can be used not only to guide intelligent agent system design but also system evaluation

    Media independent transport service for ambient intelligence

    The evolution on ambient intelligence technologies, such as sensor networks, propelled a universe of very diverse types of both data and hardware equipment creating one of the most heterogeneous network environments. This diversity brings to light the main issue we aim to address in this paper: the need for a common ground that enables communications between the different heterogeneous equipments and technologies. Starting from the well-established IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover standard, we propose its mechanisms and structure to be extended to provide the needed common ground for communication in ambient intelligence scenarios. In this work, we extend 802.21 to include sensor information, enabling different types of equipment and network technologies to communicate with each other under a common standard contributing to a truly heterogeneous network framework. To conclude, we address its viability through a comparison with other known solutions for communication on sensing devices

    Smart Housing: Technology to Aid Aging in Place - New Opportunities and Challenges

    We are at the threshold of a great change in architectural design. With cheaper and more ubiquitous computing, ?smart? spaces and responsive environments are increasingly becoming plausible and affordable. Are we as architects prepared? Can the profession of architecture respond to current computing technologies? Most critics agree that one of the first (most important) problems that ?smart? homes will help to address is that of spiraling costs of elderly healthcare and care giving. But what is the problem with healthcare? Even if there is a problem, the rural home is different from an urban home. Will the technologies that are designed for the urban home work in a rural setting? What are the differences between urban and rural healthcare models? In this thesis, we address the above questions through research of current problems and models of rural healthcare and through a documentation of studies and reports published over the last decade. This research helps us to understand if architecture can really augment healthy aging in rural home settings. In conclusion, we will examine the role of architecture (and architects) in the context of ubiquitous computing and ?smart? spaces in rural areas and propose a possible solution for this problem

    Human-Computer Interaction in Mobile Context : A Cognitive Resources Perspective

    Human-computer interaction is currently shifting its focus from desktop-based interaction to interaction with "beyond the desktop", which is embedded into everyday activities. In order to support users more elegantly, these mobile, wearable, and ubiquitous computing devices are envisioned to adapt inte lligently to their context. Thus far, however, the mobile use contexts per se have received attention, as most research has been technology-driven. Drawing from cognitive psychology, user modeling in human-computer interaction, and ethnomethodology, a framework is put forward here to analyse mobile use situations from the point of view of resource competition. The framework assumes that mobility is inherently multitasking and easily leads to competition for cognitive and other human resources. This "cognitive resource competition" framework is elaborated and associated with the psychological principles of capacity and multitasking. It looks at the typical social, interactional, cognitive, and physical tasks in mobility, relates them to the typical cognitive resources they compete for, and, based on known capacities of cognitive faculties, pinpoints restrictions and resources for action that can emerge in a given mobile situation. It is argued that the approach is useful for identifying the perceptual, attentional, and cognitive capabilities of a user in a mobile situation. The approach has implications for the design and innovation of intelligent, context-sensitive user interfaces and services. Furthermore, a practical method for making human resources visible in a design session is proposed and evaluated
