Mustapha Pacha hospital is one of the oldest health services of Africa. It was constructed as a shelter of injured soldiers in the 19th century during the Ottoman Regency. It is integrated in the city and vice-versa. The research takes as a case study the Children Clinical Medical Unit. It is one of the first wards of the hospital which receives more than 300 children each day. The objective of this research is to evaluate the spatial sensory criteria of children in the Clinical Medical Unit through Evidence Based Design approach. This approaches consists to evaluate the impact of spaces on child welfare. This research combines three steps:First, data collection regrouping historical insights regarding the unit. Second the observation of the spatial paths hospitalization of children. Third, a photo elicitation semi structured interview in order to evaluate the main lived spaces. The outcomes will contribute to healthcare facilities refurbishment operation on sensory spatial appraisals through taste, sight, touch, smell, and sound. The study will impact the healthcare facilities architecture in Algeria and expose the need of the expertise concerns regarding the sensitive aspects of ancient healthcare architecture and architectural sensory appraisals

“Landscape and Heritage of Hydroelectricity in Portugal”

    Get PDF
Hydroelectric power plants provided countries with scarcity of coal, such as Portugal, with a vital source of energy for the production of electricity in large quantities. Therefore, since the late 19th century the use of waterfalls as producers of electric power was a topic of study and interest among engineers and the matter was regularly discussed at the Association of Portuguese Civilian Engineers. The great hydroelectric power plants, considered by many as the cathedrals of the second industrial revolution are an important industrial heritage which is important to value and appreciate. Hydroelectricity also gave origin to new landscapes and the problem today regards the management of this new landscape and the construction of new patrimonial values

280 Birds with One Stone: Inducing Multilingual Taxonomies from Wikipedia using Character-level Classification

We propose a simple, yet effective, approach towards inducing multilingual taxonomies from Wikipedia. Given an English taxonomy, our approach leverages the interlanguage links of Wikipedia followed by character-level classifiers to induce high-precision, high-coverage taxonomies in other languages. Through experiments, we demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art, heuristics-heavy approaches for six languages. As a consequence of our work, we release presumably the largest and the most accurate multilingual taxonomic resource spanning over 280 languages
