Sensor failure detection system
Advanced concepts for detecting, isolating, and accommodating sensor failures were studied to determine their applicability to the gas turbine control problem. Five concepts were formulated based upon such techniques as Kalman filters and a screening process led to the selection of one advanced concept for further evaluation. The selected advanced concept uses a Kalman filter to generate residuals, a weighted sum square residuals technique to detect soft failures, likelihood ratio testing of a bank of Kalman filters for isolation, and reconfiguring of the normal mode Kalman filter by eliminating the failed input to accommodate the failure. The advanced concept was compared to a baseline parameter synthesis technique. The advanced concept was shown to be a viable concept for detecting, isolating, and accommodating sensor failures for the gas turbine applications
SIMPEL: Circuit model for photonic spike processing laser neurons
We propose an equivalent circuit model for photonic spike processing laser
neurons with an embedded saturable absorber---a simulation model for photonic
excitable lasers (SIMPEL). We show that by mapping the laser neuron rate
equations into a circuit model, SPICE analysis can be used as an efficient and
accurate engine for numerical calculations, capable of generalization to a
variety of different laser neuron types found in literature. The development of
this model parallels the Hodgkin--Huxley model of neuron biophysics, a circuit
framework which brought efficiency, modularity, and generalizability to the
study of neural dynamics. We employ the model to study various
signal-processing effects such as excitability with excitatory and inhibitory
pulses, binary all-or-nothing response, and bistable dynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
A variational Bayesian method for inverse problems with impulsive noise
We propose a novel numerical method for solving inverse problems subject to
impulsive noises which possibly contain a large number of outliers. The
approach is of Bayesian type, and it exploits a heavy-tailed t distribution for
data noise to achieve robustness with respect to outliers. A hierarchical model
with all hyper-parameters automatically determined from the given data is
described. An algorithm of variational type by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler
divergence between the true posteriori distribution and a separable
approximation is developed. The numerical method is illustrated on several one-
and two-dimensional linear and nonlinear inverse problems arising from heat
conduction, including estimating boundary temperature, heat flux and heat
transfer coefficient. The results show its robustness to outliers and the fast

Active actuator fault-tolerant control of a wind turbine benchmark model
This paper describes the design of an active fault-tolerant control scheme that is applied to the actuator of a
wind turbine benchmark. The methodology is based on adaptive filters obtained via the nonlinear geometric
approach, which allows to obtain interesting decoupling property with respect to uncertainty affecting the
wind turbine system. The controller accommodation scheme exploits the on-line estimate of the actuator
fault signal generated by the adaptive filters. The nonlinearity of the wind turbine model is described by the
mapping to the power conversion ratio from tip-speed ratio and blade pitch angles. This mapping represents
the aerodynamic uncertainty, and usually is not known in analytical form, but in general represented by
approximated two-dimensional maps (i.e. look-up tables). Therefore, this paper suggests a scheme to
estimate this power conversion ratio in an analytical form by means of a two-dimensional polynomial, which
is subsequently used for designing the active fault-tolerant control scheme. The wind turbine power generating
unit of a grid is considered as a benchmark to show the design procedure, including the aspects of
the nonlinear disturbance decoupling method, as well as the viability of the proposed approach. Extensive
simulations of the benchmark process are practical tools for assessing experimentally the features of the
developed actuator fault-tolerant control scheme, in the presence of modelling and measurement errors.
Comparisons with different fault-tolerant schemes serve to highlight the advantages and drawbacks of the
proposed methodology
Nearly extensive sequential memory lifetime achieved by coupled nonlinear neurons
Many cognitive processes rely on the ability of the brain to hold sequences
of events in short-term memory. Recent studies have revealed that such memory
can be read out from the transient dynamics of a network of neurons. However,
the memory performance of such a network in buffering past information has only
been rigorously estimated in networks of linear neurons. When signal gain is
kept low, so that neurons operate primarily in the linear part of their
response nonlinearity, the memory lifetime is bounded by the square root of the
network size. In this work, I demonstrate that it is possible to achieve a
memory lifetime almost proportional to the network size, "an extensive memory
lifetime", when the nonlinearity of neurons is appropriately utilized. The
analysis of neural activity revealed that nonlinear dynamics prevented the
accumulation of noise by partially removing noise in each time step. With this
error-correcting mechanism, I demonstrate that a memory lifetime of order

A physics-based approach to flow control using system identification
Control of amplifier flows poses a great challenge, since the influence of environmental noise sources and measurement contamination is a crucial component in the design of models and the subsequent performance of the controller. A modelbased approach that makes a priori assumptions on the noise characteristics often yields unsatisfactory results when the true noise environment is different from the assumed one. An alternative approach is proposed that consists of a data-based systemidentification technique for modelling the flow; it avoids the model-based shortcomings by directly incorporating noise influences into an auto-regressive (ARMAX) design. This technique is applied to flow over a backward-facing step, a typical example of a noise-amplifier flow. Physical insight into the specifics of the flow is used to interpret and tailor the various terms of the auto-regressive model. The designed compensator shows an impressive performance as well as a remarkable robustness to increased noise levels and to off-design operating conditions. Owing to its reliance on only timesequences of observable data, the proposed technique should be attractive in the design of control strategies directly from experimental data and should result in effective compensators that maintain performance in a realistic disturbance environment
Lorenz System Parameter Determination and Application to Break the Security of Two-channel Chaotic Cryptosystems
This paper describes how to determine the parameter values of the chaotic
Lorenz system used in a two-channel cryptosystem. The geometrical properties of
the Lorenz system are used firstly to reduce the parameter search space, then
the parameters are exactly determined, directly from the ciphertext, through
the minimization of the average jamming noise power created by the encryption

Noise reduction in coarse bifurcation analysis of stochastic agent-based models: an example of consumer lock-in
We investigate coarse equilibrium states of a fine-scale, stochastic
agent-based model of consumer lock-in in a duopolistic market. In the model,
agents decide on their next purchase based on a combination of their personal
preference and their neighbours' opinions. For agents with independent
identically-distributed parameters and all-to-all coupling, we derive an
analytic approximate coarse evolution-map for the expected average purchase. We
then study the emergence of coarse fronts when spatial segregation is present
in the relative perceived quality of products. We develop a novel Newton-Krylov
method that is able to compute accurately and efficiently coarse fixed points
when the underlying fine-scale dynamics is stochastic. The main novelty of the
algorithm is in the elimination of the noise that is generated when estimating
Jacobian-vector products using time-integration of perturbed initial
conditions. We present numerical results that demonstrate the convergence
properties of the numerical method, and use the method to show that macroscopic
fronts in this model destabilise at a coarse symmetry-breaking bifurcation.Comment: This version of the manuscript was accepted for publication on SIAD
Comparing Kalman Filters and Observers for Power System Dynamic State Estimation with Model Uncertainty and Malicious Cyber Attacks
Kalman filters and observers are two main classes of dynamic state estimation
(DSE) routines. Power system DSE has been implemented by various Kalman
filters, such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman
filter (UKF). In this paper, we discuss two challenges for an effective power
system DSE: (a) model uncertainty and (b) potential cyber attacks. To address
this, the cubature Kalman filter (CKF) and a nonlinear observer are introduced
and implemented. Various Kalman filters and the observer are then tested on the
16-machine, 68-bus system given realistic scenarios under model uncertainty and
different types of cyber attacks against synchrophasor measurements. It is
shown that CKF and the observer are more robust to model uncertainty and cyber
attacks than their counterparts. Based on the tests, a thorough qualitative
