    CES-513 Stages for Developing Control Systems using EMG and EEG Signals: A survey

    Bio-signals such as EMG (Electromyography), EEG (Electroencephalography), EOG (Electrooculogram), ECG (Electrocardiogram) have been deployed recently to develop control systems for improving the quality of life of disabled and elderly people. This technical report aims to review the current deployment of these state of the art control systems and explain some challenge issues. In particular, the stages for developing EMG and EEG based control systems are categorized, namely data acquisition, data segmentation, feature extraction, classification, and controller. Some related Bio-control applications are outlined. Finally a brief conclusion is summarized.

    Research regarding electro-oculogram based Human Computer Interface (HCI)

    In this article an electro-oculogram (EOG) based Human Computer Interface (HCI) will be presented, in order to control the mouse cursor on the screen of a computer or laptop. Electromyography (EMG) is the domain that employs the activation and deactivation (onset and cessation) of the muscles. EOG is the sub-domain of EMG field that focuses on the human eye’s movements. The EOG bio-signals can be recorded using Ag/AgCl electrodes coupled on the user’s skin and fed into a data acquisition device - an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in order to be transmitted, filtered and processed on a computer or laptop. We acquired the EOG bio-signals with a 24-bit, 4 channel, 51200 samples/s per channel ADC, made by the National Instruments (N.I.), model NI-9234 industrial ADC, using only 3 recording channels and electrodes. After processing, the program running on the computer or laptop can be used to realize commands or control different applications according to the recorded bio-signals. In our case, this was done, using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) toolbox of MATLAB®. This HCI can be used by perfectly healthy or even by disabled people. In the case of disabled people, these systems can be used to control any electronic device connected to the computer or control the device itself. Applications of this type of HCIs can be Internet browsing, mail writing, word file editing, etc. This system is meant to offer a new way of computer control - other than the existing standard communication and/or control possibilities (like keyboard and/or mouse)

    Real-time EMG based pattern recognition control for hand prostheses : a review on existing methods, challenges and future implementation

    Upper limb amputation is a condition that significantly restricts the amputees from performing their daily activities. The myoelectric prosthesis, using signals from residual stump muscles, is aimed at restoring the function of such lost limbs seamlessly. Unfortunately, the acquisition and use of such myosignals are cumbersome and complicated. Furthermore, once acquired, it usually requires heavy computational power to turn it into a user control signal. Its transition to a practical prosthesis solution is still being challenged by various factors particularly those related to the fact that each amputee has different mobility, muscle contraction forces, limb positional variations and electrode placements. Thus, a solution that can adapt or otherwise tailor itself to each individual is required for maximum utility across amputees. Modified machine learning schemes for pattern recognition have the potential to significantly reduce the factors (movement of users and contraction of the muscle) affecting the traditional electromyography (EMG)-pattern recognition methods. Although recent developments of intelligent pattern recognition techniques could discriminate multiple degrees of freedom with high-level accuracy, their efficiency level was less accessible and revealed in real-world (amputee) applications. This review paper examined the suitability of upper limb prosthesis (ULP) inventions in the healthcare sector from their technical control perspective. More focus was given to the review of real-world applications and the use of pattern recognition control on amputees. We first reviewed the overall structure of pattern recognition schemes for myo-control prosthetic systems and then discussed their real-time use on amputee upper limbs. Finally, we concluded the paper with a discussion of the existing challenges and future research recommendations

    Bio-signal based control in assistive robots: a survey

    Recently, bio-signal based control has been gradually deployed in biomedical devices and assistive robots for improving the quality of life of disabled and elderly people, among which electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) bio-signals are being used widely. This paper reviews the deployment of these bio-signals in the state of art of control systems. The main aim of this paper is to describe the techniques used for (i) collecting EMG and EEG signals and diving these signals into segments (data acquisition and data segmentation stage), (ii) dividing the important data and removing redundant data from the EMG and EEG segments (feature extraction stage), and (iii) identifying categories from the relevant data obtained in the previous stage (classification stage). Furthermore, this paper presents a summary of applications controlled through these two bio-signals and some research challenges in the creation of these control systems. Finally, a brief conclusion is summarized

    Towards electrodeless EMG linear envelope signal recording for myo-activated prostheses control

    After amputation, the residual muscles of the limb may function in a normal way, enabling the electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded from them to be used to drive a replacement limb. These replacement limbs are called myoelectric prosthesis. The prostheses that use EMG have always been the first choice for both clinicians and engineers. Unfortunately, due to the many drawbacks of EMG (e.g. skin preparation, electromagnetic interferences, high sample rate, etc.); researchers have aspired to find suitable alternatives. One proposes the dry-contact, low-cost sensor based on a force-sensitive resistor (FSR) as a valid alternative which instead of detecting electrical events, detects mechanical events of muscle. FSR sensor is placed on the skin through a hard, circular base to sense the muscle contraction and to acquire the signal. Similarly, to reduce the output drift (resistance) caused by FSR edges (creep) and to maintain the FSR sensitivity over a wide input force range, signal conditioning (Voltage output proportional to force) is implemented. This FSR signal acquired using FSR sensor can be used directly to replace the EMG linear envelope (an important control signal in prosthetics applications). To find the best FSR position(s) to replace a single EMG lead, the simultaneous recording of EMG and FSR output is performed. Three FSRs are placed directly over the EMG electrodes, in the middle of the targeted muscle and then the individual (FSR1, FSR2 and FSR3) and combination of FSR (e.g. FSR1+FSR2, FSR2-FSR3) is evaluated. The experiment is performed on a small sample of five volunteer subjects. The result shows a high correlation (up to 0.94) between FSR output and EMG linear envelope. Consequently, the usage of the best FSR sensor position shows the ability of electrode less FSR-LE to proportionally control the prosthesis (3-D claw). Furthermore, FSR can be used to develop a universal programmable muscle signal sensor that can be suitable to control the myo-activated prosthesis

    Current state of digital signal processing in myoelectric interfaces and related applications

    This review discusses the critical issues and recommended practices from the perspective of myoelectric interfaces. The major benefits and challenges of myoelectric interfaces are evaluated. The article aims to fill gaps left by previous reviews and identify avenues for future research. Recommendations are given, for example, for electrode placement, sampling rate, segmentation, and classifiers. Four groups of applications where myoelectric interfaces have been adopted are identified: assistive technology, rehabilitation technology, input devices, and silent speech interfaces. The state-of-the-art applications in each of these groups are presented.Peer reviewe

    Electrohysterography in the diagnosis of preterm birth: a review

About 15 million preterm neonates are born every year, with ratios of 10-15% of total births. In industrialized countries, preterm delivery is responsible for 70% of mortality and 75% of morbidity in the neonatal period. Diagnostic means for its timely risk assessment are lacking and the underlying physiological mechanisms are unclear. Surface recording of the uterine myoelectrical activity (electrohysterogram, EHG) has emerged as a better uterine dynamics monitoring technique than traditional surface pressure recordings and provides information on the condition of uterine muscle in different obstetrical scenarios with emphasis on predicting preterm deliveries. Objective: A comprehensive review of the literature was performed on studies related to the use of the electrohysterogram in the PTB context. Approach: This review presents and discusses the results according to the different types of parameter (temporal and spectral, non-linear and bivariate) used for EHG characterization. Main results: Electrohysterogram analysis reveals that the uterine electrophysiological changes that precede spontaneous preterm labor are associated with contractions of more intensity, higher frequency content, faster and more organized propagated activity and stronger coupling of different uterine areas. Temporal, spectral, non-linear and bivariate EHG analyses therefore provide useful and complementary information. Classificatory techniques of different types and varying complexity have been developed to diagnose PTB. The information derived from these different types of EHG parameters, either individually or in combination, is able to provide more accurate predictions of PTB than current clinical methods. However, in order to extend EHG to clinical applications, the recording set-up should be simplified, be less intrusive and more robust-and signal analysis should be automated without requiring much supervision and yield physiologically interpretable results. Significance: This review provides a general background to PTB and describes how EHG can be used to better understand its underlying physiological mechanisms and improve its prediction.
