    Proposing an alternative allocation algorithm for smartphones: the case of Forall Phones

    The refurbished market has grown at a considerable pace in recent years. The development of this market is due to the efforts of several countries to move to circular resource consumption that defines a circular economy (Mugge, Jockin, & Bocken, 2017). This is possible by reducing the waste created and reusing materials that would end up in the waste that are used again as resources (European Commission, 2019). This change has been accepted by organizations and their customers who are beginning to see the refurbished market as a great opportunity. Companies see the opportunity to dispose of used product stocks and recover some of their value (Weelden, Bakker, & Mugge, 2016). Customers see the opportunity to buy fully functional products at a fraction of the original price. The development and growth of the refurbished market has been quite noticeable in the smartphone segment, including in Portugal, where Forall Phones has been excelling. It was in the logistics area, in the allocation of smartphones to sales channels, that this project was carried out (a key area for the company's performance), with the aim of improving the allocation of smartphones to sales channels. After mapping the processes, some opportunities for improvement were identified. Then feedback on the approach (designed to respond to opportunities for improvement) was applied and implemented in Excel. The approach was then compared with other approaches being afterwards suggested some recommendations to further improve its performance.O mercado dos recondicionados tem crescido a um ritmo considerável nos últimos anos. O desenvolvimento deste mercado deve-se ao esforço de vários países em mudar para um consumo circular de recursos que é o que define uma economia circular (Mugge, Jockin, & Bocken, 2017). Isto é possível ao reduzir-se o lixo criado e ao reaproveitar materiais que iriam parar ao lixo, voltando a usá-los como recursos (European Comission, 2019). Esta mudança tem sido aceite pelas organizações e pelos seus clientes que começam a ver o mercado dos recondicionados como uma grande oportunidade. As empresas vêem a oportunidade de escoar stocks de produtos usados e de recuperar parte do seu valor (Weelden, Bakker, & Mugge, 2016). Os clientes vêem a oportunidade de comprarem produtos completamente funcionais a uma fração do preço original. O desenvolvimento e crescimento do mercado dos recondicionados tem sido bastante notório no segmento dos smartphones, incluindo em Portugal, onde a Forall Phones tem sobressaído. Foi na área logística que este projecto foi realizado (uma área fulcral para a performance da empresa), sendo o objectivo melhorar a alocação de smartphones aos canais de venda. Após o mapeamento dos processos foram identificadas algumas oportunidades de melhoria. De seguida o feedback relativamente à abordagem (criada para dar resposta às oportunidades de melhoria) foi aplicado e esta foi implementada em Excel. A abordagem foi depois comparada com outras abordagens, sugerindo-se depois recomendações para melhorar ainda mais o seu desempenho

    Applications of biased-randomized algorithms and simheuristics in integrated logistics

    Transportation and logistics (T&L) activities play a vital role in the development of many businesses from different industries. With the increasing number of people living in urban areas, the expansion of on-demand economy and e-commerce activities, the number of services from transportation and delivery has considerably increased. Consequently, several urban problems have been potentialized, such as traffic congestion and pollution. Several related problems can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem (COP). Since most of them are NP-Hard, the finding of optimal solutions through exact solution methods is often impractical in a reasonable amount of time. In realistic settings, the increasing need for 'instant' decision-making further refutes their use in real life. Under these circumstances, this thesis aims at: (i) identifying realistic COPs from different industries; (ii) developing different classes of approximate solution approaches to solve the identified T&L problems; (iii) conducting a series of computational experiments to validate and measure the performance of the developed approaches. The novel concept of 'agile optimization' is introduced, which refers to the combination of biased-randomized heuristics with parallel computing to deal with real-time decision-making.Las actividades de transporte y logística (T&L) juegan un papel vital en el desarrollo de muchas empresas de diferentes industrias. Con el creciente número de personas que viven en áreas urbanas, la expansión de la economía a lacarta y las actividades de comercio electrónico, el número de servicios de transporte y entrega ha aumentado considerablemente. En consecuencia, se han potencializado varios problemas urbanos, como la congestión del tráfico y la contaminación. Varios problemas relacionados pueden formularse como un problema de optimización combinatoria (COP). Dado que la mayoría de ellos son NP-Hard, la búsqueda de soluciones óptimas a través de métodos de solución exactos a menudo no es práctico en un período de tiempo razonable. En entornos realistas, la creciente necesidad de una toma de decisiones "instantánea" refuta aún más su uso en la vida real. En estas circunstancias, esta tesis tiene como objetivo: (i) identificar COP realistas de diferentes industrias; (ii) desarrollar diferentes clases de enfoques de solución aproximada para resolver los problemas de T&L identificados; (iii) realizar una serie de experimentos computacionales para validar y medir el desempeño de los enfoques desarrollados. Se introduce el nuevo concepto de optimización ágil, que se refiere a la combinación de heurísticas aleatorias sesgadas con computación paralela para hacer frente a la toma de decisiones en tiempo real.Les activitats de transport i logística (T&L) tenen un paper vital en el desenvolupament de moltes empreses de diferents indústries. Amb l'augment del nombre de persones que viuen a les zones urbanes, l'expansió de l'economia a la carta i les activitats de comerç electrònic, el nombre de serveis del transport i el lliurament ha augmentat considerablement. En conseqüència, s'han potencialitzat diversos problemes urbans, com ara la congestió del trànsit i la contaminació. Es poden formular diversos problemes relacionats com a problema d'optimització combinatòria (COP). Com que la majoria són NP-Hard, la recerca de solucions òptimes mitjançant mètodes de solució exactes sovint no és pràctica en un temps raonable. En entorns realistes, la creixent necessitat de prendre decisions "instantànies" refuta encara més el seu ús a la vida real. En aquestes circumstàncies, aquesta tesi té com a objectiu: (i) identificar COP realistes de diferents indústries; (ii) desenvolupar diferents classes d'aproximacions aproximades a la solució per resoldre els problemes identificats de T&L; (iii) la realització d'una sèrie d'experiments computacionals per validar i mesurar el rendiment dels enfocaments desenvolupats.     Cross-docking: A systematic literature review

    This paper identifies the major research concepts, techniques, and models covered in the cross-docking literature. A systematic literature review is conducted using the BibExcel bibliometric analysis and Gephi network analysis tools. A research focus parallelship network (RFPN) analysis and keyword co-occurrence network (KCON) analysis are used to identify the primary research themes. The RFPN results suggest that vehicle routing, inventory control, scheduling, warehousing, and distribution are most studied. Of the optimization and simulation techniques applied in cross-docking, linear and integer programming has received much attention. The paper informs researchers interested in investigating cross-docking through an integrated perspective of the research gaps in this domain. This paper systematically reviews the literature on cross-docking, identifies the major research areas, and provides a survey of the techniques and models adopted by researchers in the areas related to cross-docking

    A Metaheuristic-Based Simulation Optimization Framework For Supply Chain Inventory Management Under Uncertainty

    The need for inventory control models for practical real-world applications is growing with the global expansion of supply chains. The widely used traditional optimization procedures usually require an explicit mathematical model formulated based on some assumptions. The validity of such models and approaches for real world applications depend greatly upon whether the assumptions made match closely with the reality. The use of meta-heuristics, as opposed to a traditional method, does not require such assumptions and has allowed more realistic modeling of the inventory control system and its solution. In this dissertation, a metaheuristic-based simulation optimization framework is developed for supply chain inventory management under uncertainty. In the proposed framework, any effective metaheuristic can be employed to serve as the optimizer to intelligently search the solution space, using an appropriate simulation inventory model as the evaluation module. To be realistic and practical, the proposed framework supports inventory decision-making under supply-side and demand-side uncertainty in a supply chain. The supply-side uncertainty specifically considered includes quality imperfection. As far as demand-side uncertainty is concerned, the new framework does not make any assumption on demand distribution and can process any demand time series. This salient feature enables users to have the flexibility to evaluate data of practical relevance. In addition, other realistic factors, such as capacity constraints, limited shelf life of products and type-compatible substitutions are also considered and studied by the new framework. The proposed framework has been applied to single-vendor multi-buyer supply chains with the single vendor facing the direct impact of quality deviation and capacity constraint from its supplier and the buyers facing demand uncertainty. In addition, it has been extended to the supply chain inventory management of highly perishable products. Blood products with limited shelf life and ABO compatibility have been examined in detail. It is expected that the proposed framework can be easily adapted to different supply chain systems, including healthcare organizations. Computational results have shown that the proposed framework can effectively assess the impacts of different realistic factors on the performance of a supply chain from different angles, and to determine the optimal inventory policies accordingly

    A Classification of Hyper-heuristic Approaches

    The current state of the art in hyper-heuristic research comprises a set of approaches that share the common goal of automating the design and adaptation of heuristic methods to solve hard computational search problems. The main goal is to produce more generally applicable search methodologies. In this chapter we present and overview of previous categorisations of hyper-heuristics and provide a unified classification and definition which captures the work that is being undertaken in this field. We distinguish between two main hyper-heuristic categories: heuristic selection and heuristic generation. Some representative examples of each category are discussed in detail. Our goal is to both clarify the main features of existing techniques and to suggest new directions for hyper-heuristic research

    An investigation of novel approaches for optimising retail shelf space allocation

    This thesis is concerned with real-world shelf space allocation problems that arise due to the conflict of limited shelf space availability and the large number of products that need to be displayed. Several important issues in the shelf space allocation problem are identified and two mathematical models are developed and studied. The first model deals with a general shelf space allocation problem while the second model specifically concerns shelf space allocation for fresh produce. Both models are closely related to the knapsack and bin packing problem. The thesis firstly studies a recently proposed generic search technique, hyper-heuristics, and introduces a simulated annealing acceptance criterion in order to improve its performance. The proposed algorithm, called simulated annealing hyper-heuristics, is initially tested on the one-dimensional bin packing problem, with very promising and competitive results being produced. The algorithm is then applied to the general shelf space allocation problem. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to a general simulated annealing algorithm and other types of hyper-heuristics. For the test data sets used in the thesis, the new approach solves every instance to over 98% of the upper bound which was obtained via a two-stage relaxation method. The thesis also studies and formulates a deterministic shelf space allocation and inventory model specifically for fresh produce. The model, for the first time, considers the freshness condition as an important factor in influencing a product's demand. Further analysis of the model shows that the search space of the problem can be reduced by decomposing the problem into a nonlinear knapsack problem and a single-item inventory problem that can be solved optimally by a binary search. Several heuristic and meta-heuristic approaches are utilised to optimise the model, including four efficient gradient based constructive heuristics, a multi-start generalised reduced gradient (GRG) algorithm, simulated annealing, a greedy randomised adaptive search procedure (GRASP) and three different types of hyper-heuristics. Experimental results show that the gradient based constructive heuristics are very efficient and all meta-heuristics can only marginally improve on them. Among these meta-heuristics, two simulated annealing based hyper-heuristic performs slightly better than the other meta-heuristic methods. Across all test instances of the three problems, it is shown that the introduction of simulated annealing in the current hyper-heuristics can indeed improve the performance of the algorithms. However, the simulated annealing hyper-heuristic with random heuristic selection generally performs best among all the other meta-heuristics implemented in this thesis.     A retail category management model integrating shelf space and inventory levels

    A retail category management model that considers the interplay of optimal product assortment decisions, space allocation and inventory quantities is presented in this paper. Specifically, the proposed model maximizes the total net profit in terms of decision variables expressing product assortment, shelf space allocation and common review period. The model takes into consideration several constraints such as the available shelf space, backroom inventory space, retailer's financial resources, and estimates of rate of demand for products based on shelf space allocation and competing products. The review period can take any values greater than zero. Results of the proposed model were compared withthe results of the current industry practice for randomly generated product assortments of size six, ten and fourteen. The model also outperformed the literature benchmark. The paper demonstrates that the optimal common review period is flexible enough to accommodate the administrative restrictions of delivery schedules for products, without significantly deviating from the optimal solution

With two cooperation companies from the service sector (retailing and healthcare), three practice-relevant decision problems are jointly elicited and defined. Subsequently, the planning problems are transferred into mathematical problems and solved with the help of optimal and/or heuristic methods. The status quo of the companies could be significantly improved for all the problems dealt with.Diese Doktorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Anwendung von Operation Research Methoden in der Praxis. Mit zwei Kooperationsunternehmen aus dem Dienstleistungssektor (Einzelhandel und Gesundheitswesen) werden drei praxisrelevante Planungsprobleme gemeinsam eruiert und definiert. In weiterer Folge werden die Entscheidungsmodelle in mathematische Probleme transferiert und mit Hilfe von optimalen und/oder heuristischen Verfahren gelöst. Bei allen behandelten Problemstellungen konnte der bei den Unternehmen angetroffene Status Quo signifikant verbessert werden

    Study in this paper is concerned with optimization of both quantity of order and selling price together, considering EOQ model for items with depreciating nature. It is based on the few assumptions like rate of demand is dependent on level of stock displayed on shelf as well as per unit selling rate, also, the space for stock display is finite. Two mathematical models are studied to investigate the further revised EOQ modelling for obtaining maximum profits and also develop models for such optimized solutions.     A model for fresh produce shelf-space allocation and inventory management with freshness-condition-dependent demand

    Asignificant amount of work has investigated inventory control problems associated with fresh produce. Much of this work has considered deteriorating inventory control with many models having been proposed for various situations. However, no researchers have specifically studied fresh produce, which has its own special characteristics. Most research categorizes fresh produce into more general deteriorating categories with random lifetimes and nondecaying utilities. However, this classification is not reasonable or practical because the freshness of an item usually plays an important role in influencing the demand for the produce. In this paper, a single-period inventory and shelf-space allocation model is proposed for fresh produce. These items usually have a very short lifetime. The demand rate is assumed to be deterministic and dependent on both the displayed inventory (the number of facings of items on the shelves) and the items' freshness condition (which decreases over time). Several problem instances of different sizes are provided and solved by a modified generalized reduced gradient algorithm
