Hardward and algorithm architectures for real-time additive synthesis
Additive synthesis is a fundamental computer music synthesis paradigm tracing its origins to the work of Fourier and Helmholtz. Rudimentary implementation linearly combines harmonic sinusoids (or partials) to generate tones whose perceived timbral characteristics are a strong function of the partial amplitude spectrum. Having evolved over time, additive synthesis describes a collection of algorithms each characterised by the time-varying linear combination of basis components to generate temporal evolution of timbre. Basis components include exactly harmonic partials, inharmonic partials with time-varying frequency or non-sinusoidal waveforms each with distinct spectral characteristics. Additive synthesis of polyphonic musical instrument tones requires a large number of independently controlled partials incurring a large computational overhead whose investigation and reduction is a key motivator for this work. The thesis begins with a review of prevalent synthesis techniques setting additive synthesis in context and introducing the spectrum modelling paradigm which provides baseline spectral data to the additive synthesis process obtained from the analysis of natural sounds. We proceed to investigate recursive and phase accumulating digital sinusoidal oscillator algorithms, defining specific metrics to quantify relative performance. The concepts of phase accumulation, table lookup phase-amplitude mapping and interpolated fractional addressing are introduced and developed and shown to underpin an additive synthesis subclass - wavetable lookup synthesis (WLS). WLS performance is simulated against specific metrics and parameter conditions peculiar to computer music requirements. We conclude by presenting processing architectures which accelerate computational throughput of specific WLS operations and the sinusoidal additive synthesis model. In particular, we introduce and investigate the concept of phase domain processing and present several “pipeline friendly” arithmetic architectures using this technique which implement the additive synthesis of sinusoidal partials
Neural network computing using on-chip accelerators
The use of neural networks, machine learning, or artificial intelligence, in its broadest and most controversial sense, has been a tumultuous journey involving three distinct hype cycles and a history dating back to the 1960s. Resurgent, enthusiastic interest in machine learning and its applications bolsters the case for machine learning as a fundamental computational kernel. Furthermore, researchers have demonstrated that machine learning can be utilized as an auxiliary component of applications to enhance or enable new types of computation such as approximate computing or automatic parallelization. In our view, machine learning becomes not the underlying application, but a ubiquitous component of applications. This view necessitates a different approach towards the deployment of machine learning computation that spans not only hardware design of accelerator architectures, but also user and supervisor software to enable the safe, simultaneous use of machine learning accelerator resources.
In this dissertation, we propose a multi-transaction model of neural network computation to meet the needs of future machine learning applications. We demonstrate that this model, encompassing a decoupled backend accelerator for inference and learning from hardware and software for managing neural network transactions can be achieved with low overhead and integrated with a modern RISC-V microprocessor. Our extensions span user and supervisor software and data structures and, coupled with our hardware, enable multiple transactions from different address spaces to execute simultaneously, yet safely. Together, our system demonstrates the utility of a multi-transaction model to increase energy efficiency improvements and improve overall accelerator throughput for machine learning applications
Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware
Abstract
This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen
Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad. Se investiga la arquitectura del sistema y del motor de reconfiguración que proporcione a la FPGA la capacidad de reconfiguración dinámica parcial de sus recursos programables, con objeto de sintetizar, mediante codiseño hardware/software, una determinada aplicación particionada en tareas multiplexadas en tiempo y en espacio, optimizando así su implementación física –área de silicio, tiempo de procesado, complejidad, flexibilidad, densidad funcional, coste y potencia disipada– comparada con otras alternativas basadas en hardware estático (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). Se evalúa el flujo de diseño de dicha tecnología a través del prototipado de varias aplicaciones de ingeniería (sistemas de control, coprocesadores aritméticos, procesadores de imagen, etc.), evidenciando un nivel de madurez viable ya para su explotación en la industria.Resum

Improving low latency applications for reconfigurable devices
This thesis seeks to improve low latency application performance via architectural improvements in reconfigurable devices. This is achieved by improving resource utilisation and access, and by exploiting the different environments within which reconfigurable devices are deployed.
Our first contribution leverages devices deployed at the network level to enable the low latency processing of financial market data feeds. Financial exchanges transmit messages via two identical data feeds to reduce the chance of message loss. We present an approach to arbitrate these redundant feeds at the network level using a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). With support for any messaging protocol, we evaluate our design using the NASDAQ TotalView-ITCH, OPRA, and ARCA data feed protocols, and provide two simultaneous outputs: one prioritising low latency, and one prioritising high reliability with three dynamically configurable windowing methods.
Our second contribution is a new ring-based architecture for low latency, parallel access to FPGA memory. Traditional FPGA memory is formed by grouping block memories (BRAMs) together and accessing them as a single device. Our architecture accesses these BRAMs independently and in parallel. Targeting memory-based computing, which stores pre-computed function results in memory, we benefit low latency applications that rely on: highly-complex functions; iterative computation; or many parallel accesses to a shared resource. We assess square root, power, trigonometric, and hyperbolic functions within the FPGA, and provide a tool to convert Python functions to our new architecture.
Our third contribution extends the ring-based architecture to support any FPGA processing element. We unify E heterogeneous processing elements within compute pools, with each element implementing the same function, and the pool serving D parallel function calls. Our implementation-agnostic approach supports processing elements with different latencies, implementations, and pipeline lengths, as well as non-deterministic latencies. Compute pools evenly balance access to processing elements across the entire application, and are evaluated by implementing eight different neural network activation functions within an FPGA.Open Acces
Energy Efficient VLSI Circuits for MIMO-WLAN
Mobile communication - anytime, anywhere access to data and communication services - has been continuously increasing since the operation of the first wireless communication link by Guglielmo Marconi. The demand for higher data rates, despite the limited bandwidth, led to the development of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication which is often combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Together, these two techniques achieve a high bandwidth efficiency. Unfortunately, techniques such as MIMO-OFDM significantly increase the signal processing complexity of transceivers. While fast improvements in the integrated circuit (IC) technology enabled to implement more signal processing complexity per chip, large efforts had and have to be done for novel algorithms as well as for efficient very large scaled integration (VLSI) architectures in order to meet today's and tomorrow's requirements for mobile wireless communication systems. In this thesis, we will present architectures and VLSI implementations of complete physical (PHY) layer application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) under the constraints imposed by an industrial wireless communication standard. Contrary to many other publications, we do not elaborate individual components of a MIMO-OFDM communication system stand-alone, but in the context of the complete PHY layer ASIC. We will investigate the performance of several MIMO detectors and the corresponding preprocessing circuits, being integrated into the entire PHY layer ASIC, in terms of achievable error-rate, power consumption, and area requirement. Finally, we will assemble the results from the proposed PHY layer implementations in order to enhance the energy efficiency of a transceiver. Underwater Celestial Navigation Using the Polarization of Light Fields
Global-scale underwater navigation presents challenges that modern technology has not solved. Current technologies drift and accumulate errors over time (inertial measurement), are accurate but short-distance (acoustic), or do not sufficiently penetrate the air-water interface (radio and GPS). To address these issues, I have developed a new mode of underwater navigation based on the passive observation of patterns in the polarization of in-water light. These patterns can be used to infer the sun__s relative position, which enables the use of celestial navigation in the underwater environment. I have developed an underwater polarization video camera based on a bio-inspired polarization image sensor and the image processing and inference algorithms for estimating the sun__s position. My system estimates heading with RMS error of 6.02_ and global position with RMS error of 442 km. Averaging experimental results from a single site yielded a 0.38_ heading error and a 61 km error in global position. The instrument can detect changes in polarization due to a 0.31_ movement of the sun, which corresponds to 35.2 km of ground movement, with 99% confidence. This technique could be used by underwater vehicles for long-distance navigation and suggests additional ways that marine animals with polarization-sensitive vision could perform both local and long-distance navigation
Video Processing Acceleration using Reconfigurable Logic and Graphics Processors
A vexing question is `which architecture will prevail as the core feature of the next state of
the art video processing system?' This thesis examines the substitutive and collaborative
use of the two alternatives of the reconfigurable logic and graphics processor architectures.
A structured approach to executing architecture comparison is presented - this includes a
proposed `Three Axes of Algorithm Characterisation' scheme and a formulation of perfor-
mance drivers. The approach is an appealing platform for clearly defining the problem,
assumptions and results of a comparison. In this work it is used to resolve the advanta-
geous factors of the graphics processor and reconfigurable logic for video processing, and
the conditions determining which one is superior. The comparison results prompt the
exploration of the customisable options for the graphics processor architecture. To clearly
define the architectural design space, the graphics processor is first identifed as part of
a wider scope of homogeneous multi-processing element (HoMPE) architectures. A novel
exploration tool is described which is suited to the investigation of the customisable op-
tions of HoMPE architectures. The tool adopts a systematic exploration approach and a
high-level parameterisable system model, and is used to explore pre- and post-fabrication
customisable options for the graphics processor. A positive result of the exploration is the
proposal of a reconfigurable engine for data access (REDA) to optimise graphics processor
performance for video processing-specific memory access patterns. REDA demonstrates
the viability of the use of reconfigurable logic as collaborative `glue logic' in the graphics
processor architecture
